Luka…..

I remember hearing Wilt say the attendance at his 100 pt game was only like 3000 folks and he estimated that like 10,000 people had told him they were there over the years. He had another prodigous claim of over 10,000 too, as I recall! Most prolific ball playa of all time?
If you do the math, 10k would have meant multiples every night. A different one every night is 27 years worth.

Yeah, that's why I've kept it on the down low. I'm only around 4,000 I guess! ... and yes VPM, I used a condom with every damn one!

I was there... and I saw Wilt score 100 pts too... and, and have you met my wife; Morgan Fairchild? Yeah, yeah, that's right, Morgan Fairchild is my wife!

The same happened here in Charlotte with Eric Clapton at the Double Door in the late 80s or around 90. I've heard many claim to have been there. Didn't believe a one!

so "YOU'RE" Chandler's transvestite father.

I remember many and there are several mentioned in this thread: Duke Tomato and the All Star Frogs, Dr Bop and the Headliners, Rods and Cones, The Scene, Henry Lee Summer, Roadmaster, et al... ?? REO played some shows in Indy and were at the Sherwood in the mid-late 70s and I think Joe Walsh and The James Gang played there too maybe. My sister is 7 years older than me and I remember her talking about those shows. Surprised I didn't hear more about Johnny Cougar playing in the area, but he pumped out some hits pretty early and maybe began national touring sooner? I've met many people who ran in to him around Btown and Indy (virtually every one said: "asshole"!), but don't think I've met one who claims to have seen him play a bar or smaller venue.

was thinking pre most of those.

Rods and Cones i'm thinking mid 80s or later, but at least up till recently, they still show up at The Bluebird during the Thanksgiving or Christmas break for a show.

PK, the guitarist for R&C, was in several Btown bands prior to R&C, and one, The News, did one or 2 Motels songs from the album pictured above, including maybe the one in the video.

that or Cry Baby or both.

early to mid 80s Cougar did back to back nights at Time Out/Jakes/Oscars/Axis/ whatever the name was then.

i went the 2nd night.

1st night was simulcast on the Btown local access channel.. not sure if the 2nd night was.

Pure Funk, (Roadmaster prequel), Faith Band, Heirborn/Light, Shilo Morning, were some good Btown/Indy bands in the 70s

saw REO at the skating rink behind Bloomington High School, (now South), i'm thinking late 60s or early 70s.

had never heard of them at the time, and couldn't tell you the lineup at the time. (saw them numerous times after they hit big).

Paul Revere and The Raiders was supposed to be the band, but didn't show, and REO was the replacement.

i don't think anyone there had heard of them at the time, so must have been pre RTSO.

also couldn't say if Cronin was with them at that time.

Forgot about Faith Band. Pure Funk and Light seem to ring a bell... but maybe I was thinking of Pure Light or Light Funk! I was at IU in 84-85 and in Indy for the balance of the 80s and saw all those bands during that time. Had a beer or 2 with Henry Lee at one of the fraternities, Sigma Chi i think.

Did you see REO on New Years Eve 1980? Still thought that was one of the better shows I've ever seen. NYE concerts sometimes add some extra juice and that was a good one!

Everyone also claims to have been at the concert where someone hit Liam Gallagher from Oasis with a shoe.

My wife included...

I would have loved to have been sitting in the car on the drive home when Reggie Miller said he had 39 and everything went in. Then Sis...you know the rest. 105. Hahaha

Great post with great memories.

Some of my favorites: (1978-1982)

Dr. Bop with another pitcher.

Carl Storie of Faith hanging upside down singing at the Bluebird.

Light covering Robert Palmers "You're gonna get what's coming" and Badfingers "Baby Blue" back to back at Jake's/Oscars/or whatever that place was - LOL. Two of my favorite "power pop" songs.

The Grass Roots with most of its original members (don't think Warren Entner was included - but Rob Grill was) doing a fantastic show, ( much more rock-n-roll than pop) - I found a $20 bill on the floor that night that no one at my table claimed - I knew it would be a good night - HA!

Dr. Bob with another pitcher.

Duke Tomatoe being very Dukish.

PK was/is a good dude - I remember them playing the courtyard at McNutt & the story of how they had to change there name from the News, because some obscure band from the San Fran area sued (or threated to) them over the name (Huey Lewis, anyone? )

Dr. Bop with another pitcher.

Roadmaster was another I have vague memories of, there was a lot of booze consumed back then.

I think the JCM shows referenced above were after my time or I would have been there. Saw about everything else - LOL.

I guess he figured all those people lied to him over the years about being at his 100 pt game, what's another embellishment on some of his other scoring feats?

Keeping on the music subject. Was just thinking today. Years ago I offered my bro in law tickets for his birthday to see Bowie. He didn't want to go being a full blown pop guy. I should have went but the wife at the time was...whatever. Damn one that I missed. Would have loved to have seen David Bowie. Anyone get the chance?

Bowie was one of my big misses. (Hits head with palm of hand) Thought I was going to catch the Serious Moonlight tour & something came up that I couldn't.

Missing Queen/Prince were two others I seriously regret.

Though my biggest miss wasn't my fault - friend of mine in my hometown had a block of tickets for Zep in Chicago including a ticket for me, well Bonzo croaked & there went that show.

Ohhh damn the Zep hurt.

I've had a few others too never saw Marley and had the chance and same with The Clash.

On a smaller scale had a chance to see Love and Rockets in Irvine, Ca and blew that.

Wondering about Rod Stewart. I saw a recent playlist though and it is targeted towards his slow, romancy, chick stuff while I prefer his older more rock n roll stuff.

Rod Stewart would be on my alltime wishlist, but it's hard for me to get excited about seeing some of these old farts, either with their voice eroding (Dylan), or not playing their classics. Had no interest in seeing the Stones recently, but had many friends tell me it was a great show. Hard for me to imagine getting excited about a 70+ yo Mick gyrating to Satisfaction. I saw Billy Joel a couple years ago and thought he still put on a great show. Have heard Elton has slipped several rungs.

Love talking to my brother in law about concerts. I'm 56 he's 72 and grew up in the late 60s. He's seen so many classic rock bands I've wanted to see. Think he's seen the Doors, Stones, Zep, CCR, Hendrix and Dylan, among others. Probably Rod Stewart and maybe even the Faces. And, of course he saw most of them in their heyday. Thinking he said he saw Bowie too. I don't believe he saw the Beatles, but I've got to ask him. I remember there was someone on here who'd seen the Beatles at the Indy Fairgrounds back in the day, but don't remember who it was!

I've seen Sir Rod 3 times (Out of Order @ Market square , unplugged &seated & another time @ Deer Creek) but not in about 20+ years.

First time I saw him, he had the Gordon Pipers pipe him in & he kicked the traditional soccer ball into the crowd and ripped into "Hot Legs". All was good.

The second time, in the middle of his "unplugged & seated" he threw his chair off the stage and rocked the shit out of "Every picture tells a Story" and brought the house down. (Surely someone on here saw that show besides me)

The 3rd time, he opened with a brilliant cover of Oasis' "Cigarettes & Alcohol". He's probably the only artist I've ever seen open with another artist's top 10 hit.

When he's on there's none better. Problem is, I've heard he's lost a step as you might expect at his age. He used to give Mick a run for his money with stage acrobatics - I don't think that's the case anymore.

Side note: I'm almost 62 and we we're recently was visiting my wife's aunt who is 65. I was reading "Long Time Gone" by David Crosby - she casually mentions that she saw CSNY in 1974 in Cleveland. (The "Doom" tour) That got my attention - LOL

I have a number of older friends who love to spin me up about seeing bands they know I had no chance to see.

Of course with the youngsters today I always tell them how Bon Scott of AC/DC was one of the most incredible front men of all time - I quickly become a combination of Yoda & James Bond in their eyes - VBG.

One of my IU college friends saw the Beatles back at day at the fairgrounds -His dad took him at age six & put him up on his shoulders & said "never forget this, you'll thank me later". Problem was, all he could remember was sheer craziness & not a thing about their performance - HA!

I am seeing both Garth Brooks & Billy Joel up at ND stadium so we'll see how they're doing with activity. (& before anyone doubts my loyalty, I hate reversible jacket fans - I'm IU all the way- FTR)

I passed on Elton this time because I've seen him 3 times as well, & wanted to remember him the way he was back in the day. I'm glad people went to see him, but I just didn't want to see what I know would have been a decline in his performance skills.

Unless something pops beforehand, my next ticket in hand is Sammy Hagar & the Circle. I've bee a fan of Sammy's since the Montrose days. Should be a great show - He's still rockin' like he's 20 yrs younger.

Does your IU friend post here? Seems like the story I remember was that his Dad took him when he was a young lad!

Does no one else remember who that was? I'm terrible about remembering details of posters, but at the time the guy was a pretty regular poster.

Just saw Sammy at the Ryman last month. Good show - he still can sing and Jason Bonham can beat the hell out of drum kit. Michael Anthony still hits the notes as well. Rock Candy was a highlight early in the show. I like the fact that he seems to genuinely have a good time in everything he does - and why wouldn't he?

Meh I’m not buying. Maybe it’s the people one surrounds themselves with

You're contradicting yourself, assuming I'm reading that correctly.. Of course you may also live in a hole and not interact with people. I guess I have no idea one way or the other though.

Not sure if he posts here or not.

I lost touch with him yrs ago & don't want to "out him" if he wants to remain anonymous. If someone (or he, himself) responds to this thread I would engage a bit more. He was a class act & I'd love to have a beer with him, so who knows?

Until I retired awhile back, I never posted just lurked (for over 20 yrs) & I too vaguely remember someone posting about seeing the Beatles at the fairgrounds - & I thought , yeah I know someone that actually happened to as a child -- not a potential "wanna be there fraud". You know, like people saying they were at the Wat-shot game that weren't really there. Few & far between, but its a thing.

Would love to see Rock Candy done!

Mrs. Shades got me tix for my birthday (She's not a hard rocker, pop/folk for her) so my old IU grad school roomie & I are going to rock out that night.

If I'm not too hungover maybe I'll post a review for the board - LOL

Left out the Clash. Huge miss on my part.

Yeah I loved Rod's "garage band" blow the doors off the bar rock. He's kind of like Elton to me. Loved them years ago & don't want to ruin my drug/alcohol induced good memories - VBG.

Well you had me at threw his chair off the stage and rocked Every picture Tells a Story. I have to go now. :) Hopefully he comes out and kicks it one last time.

Saw the Stones in 78 at Soldier Field. Mick is a great frontman. I've seen a ton of stuff too. The frontman that stuck out the most was Scott Weiland STP. Memorable.

Goin to see Sting with the the wife here this week in Carmel. She is pumped about that one. It'll be good but I saw the Police twice back in the day. First time was at Park West and there was prolly less than 1000 people. It was right after they launched Outlandos d'Amour. I've never seen a drummer beat the drums like Stewart. He had a tray beside him with sticks on it and every couple of minutes splinters would fly and he would grab another. Stewart is a bad Ass drummer and yes I saw Peart too.

Great stories keep em coming.

OK, I'm #jealous on Sting - but I saw the Police so I'm good - we got invited by some friends to see Garth Brooks from a suite in ND stadium so that's our concert this weekend. (I'm not much of a country guy, but Garth transcends genres IMO)

I'm actually a massive Van Morrison fan, & probably would have opted for his Chicago show this Sunday after Garth, but I'll be very interested in your report back on the Sting show - please post about that. (I've seen Van, so I'm good there too)

Rolling Stones stories (warning for adults with kids having access - use parental controls starting now -lol)

I was in attendance for the recording of the "Still Life" live album at Rosemont horizon Nov 24th 1981. This was my first experience seeing them & I loved it.

I still have the ticket stub for that one - I have no idea how it survived.

Although, Mick turning cartwheels during "Tumbling Dice" & Keith doing normal Keith things were fantastic. The cultural component is what I remember. Cultural being rampant Drug usage everywhere (disclaimer, I can neither confirm nor deny any participation in these activities, but I was of legal age & can confirm adult beverages prior to the show)

There was a dude in a full-up Merlin Costume (including wizard moon & stars hat) wandering the parking lots before the show with a veritable cornucopia of debauchery within. I'm never been a psychedelics guy but I've never seen a spread like that before or since. Just wow.

Then to add to the ambiance, we couldn't get to our seats until this guy & his girlfriend stopped doing half of Peru in front of us - He looked up at me & said " It's only Rock-n-Roll" to which I responded (of course) "But I like it"

He didn't give us any.

The last 4-song run of "Honky Tonk Women/Brown Sugar/Start me up/JJF" was incredible. Encore of "Satisfaction" & everyone went back to their mirrors "Happy" - VBG

(actually if I recall correctly - Keith only sang lead on "Little T & A" and they didn't play "Happy" that night)

Ah, the good ole, days when grad school / future careers & working through the BPO to find a job were still a year away!

Michael Anthony sang lead on "Ain't Talking 'Bout Love" - that was another highlight. Just a really fun show - I'm thinking about seeing them again this summer in St. Louis at the outdoor venue.

I still read what I wrote and had some WC carryover that I'm not proud of. I need to stop going over there.
Saw Barry Manilow at IU Auditorium
Southside Johnny and The Jukes at The patio. Johnny Cougar, HL Summer, and Duke Tomato among others at The Vague.
Saw The Byrds at State Fair Coliseum.( the concert was cut short, as they were so bad and obviously disinterested that the crowd on the floor started breaking up the folding chairs and pelting the band.)
Kristopherson at some little theater on east 10th street.
SRV and Cream at Clowes Hall on Butler campus. Cream came out and flat pinned back our ears with a solid wall of sound. After about 15 minutes they paused, and some guy yells." Hey, can you turn it up any?" Hall and Oates at The Indiana Convention Center...Daryl Hall sat on the front of the stage and ended the set singing a capella.....
The best was having all-access passes to Farm Aid in 1990...

Wow we did not know about Van touring. Another bucket lister for us and hopefully we get the chance. Too much going on to go to Chicago on Saturday, come back for mothers day brunch and then Sting. Maybe well try him in Vegas.

Mick doing cartwheels... Back in 79 0r 80 we saw the Blues Brothers at Poplar Creek in Chicago. Half my friends went to the Allman Brothers same night, different venue. Anyways, when Jake came out on stage he did the same thing he did down the church aisle in the movie and we all about crapped. He could really do cartwheels, roundoffs, and and such. Hellava show and they gave away the bluesmobile from the movie that night complete with the big speaker on top. They asked the crowd to check under their seats and somebody won it. When they took a break halfway through my future ex wife and I started a conversation with the guys that ran the music board in the center of the concert. We hit it off so well they let us stay in the box the entire second half of the show. We got to see the set list and everything it was pretty cool.

The merlin guy...Sad how times have changed. Back then you did not have to worry about those types of things. These days another story. Different ERA for sure.

I'll report back on Sting. Just an fyi Friday July 15th Rod plays Ruoff. The night after the Black Keys with Band of Horses which we are going too. Could be a great weekend.

Van loves to play the colosseum @ Caesar's palace in Vegas (the one constructed originally for Celine Dion) and does so frequently (That's where I saw him pre-COVID) I highly recommend both the venue & of course him. He's been playing some very intimate & smaller venues around the country recently. We were down in Fla & although we didn't see him, the reviews (by Vanatics) were excellent.

We're basically gone the entire 2nd half of July so I will miss some shows.

Great Blues Bros. story - that's what I'm talking about -memories through music, none better.
