great band. right there with the beatles, stones and the who.
Yes, I think you've seen him before.
Swims with the fishes…Luca Brasi…
Tony Dalton is great in this role. Lalo is a guy who has this friendly surface but you can tell underneath a lot of dark stuff is going on. I've known people in the church like this. Their smile is their disguise.
One of my lifetime bonehead moves was going to see the Cars at Market Square Arena the same night the Kinks played to fewer than 3,000 at the Convention Center. DOH! I loved the Cars at that time ('81?), but they sucked in concert. Barely moved, talked or acknowledged the crowd. Bonehead move #2, was that I took a girl to see them again a few years later... double doh!great band. right there with the beatles, stones and the who.
I also loved the Cars and went to that concert. Not only were they extremely boring, they only played for 55 minutes....I couldn't believe the show was over. One of my lifetime bonehead moves was going to see the Cars at Market Square Arena.......
yeah... but I bet you weren't dumb enough to go see them again? I hope I got laid, but probably not!I also loved the Cars and went to that concert. Not only were they extremely boring, they only played for 55 minutes....I couldn't believe the show was over.
It still pisses me off.
That's going way back, but I think it might have been Men At Work and possibly INXS with the Cars were the third group.yeah... but I bet you weren't dumb enough to go see them again? I hope I got laid, but probably not!
Do you remember who the warm up act was? Maybe it was at least a decent one. Thinking maybe Martha Davis and the Motels?
don't know if it's correct, but found this site and it says Sept 13, 1980 The Cars and the Motels at MSA. Guess some of those braincells are still working! That's going way back, but I think it might have been Men At Work and possibly INXS with the Cars were the third group.
I'm pretty sure I've never seen the Motels.
Yes it was Martha and the Motels and they blew the Cars out. Ouch though on the Kinks damn.yeah... but I bet you weren't dumb enough to go see them again? I hope I got laid, but probably not!

Dr Bop and the Headliners, I do believe!Yes it was Martha and the Motels and they blew the Cars out. Ouch though on the Kinks damn.
I remember being in South Bend at Eddy Money Uggghh we leave and go to Duke Tomato over at Vegetable Buddies. Duke was fun back then.
Sounds like you went to shows in same era. So who was the band that used to play Bloomington that had the keg on stage with the chicks and the beach umbrella. They showed up to a club in Mishawaka and we had a blast. Every now and then some guy would fill up a pitcher and walk around pouring free beers to the crowd?
we used to see a punk/new wave band around Indy and Btown called The Scene in the mid-late 80s and they were a fun show. Henry Lee Summer was still strong on the local scene then too.Yes it was Martha and the Motels and they blew the Cars out. Ouch though on the Kinks damn.

Dr. Bop hahaha. Thats it! OMGDr Bop and the Headliners, I do believe!
Saw the Stray Cats too. The Bus Boys I saw in Reno. Saw War in Reno too that was an incredible show.we used to see a punk/new wave band around Indy and Btown called The Scene in the mid-late 80s and they were a fun show. Henry Lee Summer was still strong on the local scene then too.
I've seen lots of shows, but one of my all-time and unexpected favorites was seeing the Stray Cats and the minimum wage rockers, The Bus Boys, in Bloomington at the IU Auditorium. Great show, both bands rocked. We were in the balcony and at times it was hard to stand it was swaying so much. I thought it was coming down.
Probably make a great thread: best shows where you didn't know what to expect, or didn't expect much. That show would be on my list, the first time I saw Robert Earl Keene, Lyle Lovett w John Hiatt, have to think on a few more... Mary Chapin Carpenter was really good the first 2 times I saw her... c'mon thinking cap!
Found this. The Velendez sisters were the chicks!Dr Bop and the Headliners, I do believe!
Now that I think about it, 1981 may have too early for me to see them. I did find this one, but it isn't listed in you archive website......don't know if it's correct, but found this site and it says Sept 13, 1980 The Cars and the Motels at MSA. Guess some of those braincells are still working!
PS, it's funny because there are a bunch of shows on that list that I saw, but if the dates are correct, I have the timing wrong in my mind. I've always thought my first big concert at MSA was BOC and Foghat, but it says that was in 81 or 82 and there are probably 5-6 shows I saw before that. The human mind is a terrible thing to waste... damnit!
Unexpected and highest energy for me was Skankin Pickle. The venue was the electric ballroom in Tempe with a sunken pit and rail around the top that tables went around. The stagedives and pit were legend. Skanking Pickle killed it and had such high energy. I've never seen that kind of crowd either just smiles man. Ska shows are just so much fun.I've seen lots of shows, but one of my all-time and unexpected favorites was seeing the Stray Cats and the minimum wage rockers, The Bus Boys, in Bloomington at the IU Auditorium. Yes the Fabulous Velendez Sisters...I guess the venue I saw them at made it. Very small...everyone had a good time.to nitpick, i'm thinking The "Fabulous" Velendez Sisters.
only saw them once, at The Vogue.
they did put on a good show.
anybody else old enough to remember any 70s or early 80s Btown/Indy regional bands?

I didn't get there until '86, but had seen Rods and Cones prior. I got there right around the time they finally called it quits. Lavengood played with John Eddie for a while after that, but I never saw that act. I think he teaches now.anybody else old enough to remember any 70s or early 80s Btown/Indy regional bands?
I wouldn't rate the Kinks quite up there with the Beatles, Zep, Stones or Who, but certainly Rock and Roll royalty and in the years since, a band I'd have much rather seen, especially in a relatively small venue/crowd. You Really Got Me, All Day and All of the Night, Sunny Afternoon, Well Respected Man, Set Me Free and of course, Lola. Put out some solid music back then, just overshadowed by those mentioned above. The Motels were the Cars' opening act at MSA during the Cars' Ranorama tour.
1980.
saw the Cars twice at MSA.
not the greatest band in concert, but The Kinks wouldn't be my first choice either.
always thought Celluloid Heroes was The Kinks flirtation with greatness, though not the song most think of when they think Kinks..
this is The Motels album we listened to at the time. pre being Martha Davis and.
the album cover that inspired a super bowl halftime show.
SV?see where SV is coming to Btown.
Bob and Tom did a Luka take off back in the day.
i remember the opening line as,
"My name is Luka, I sell pizza at the mall".
Suzanne Vega is in Bloomington tonight...
I remember many and there are several mentioned in this thread: Duke Tomato and the All Star Frogs, Dr Bop and the Headliners, Rods and Cones, The Scene, Henry Lee Summer, Roadmaster, et al... ?? REO played some shows in Indy and were at the Sherwood in the mid-late 70s and I think Joe Walsh and The James Gang played there too maybe. My sister is 7 years older than me and I remember her talking about those shows. Surprised I didn't hear more about Johnny Cougar playing in the area, but he pumped out some hits pretty early and maybe began national touring sooner? I've met many people who ran in to him around Btown and Indy (virtually every one said: "asshole"!), but don't think I've met one who claims to have seen him play a bar or smaller venue.to nitpick, i'm thinking The "Fabulous" Velendez Sisters.

Fall of 86 or spring of 87, Lou Reed and Mellencamp just showed up and played at the Bird. I don't know anyone who was actually there, but lots of people claim they were.I've met many people who ran in to him around Btown and Indy (virtually every one said: "asshole"!), but don't think I've met one who claims to have seen him play a bar or smaller venue.
I was there... and I saw Wilt score 100 pts too... and, and have you met my wife; Morgan Fairchild? Yeah, yeah, that's right, Morgan Fairchild is my wife!Fall of 86 or spring of 87, Lou Reed and Mellencamp just showed up and played at the Bird. 100 person venue that had 2,500 people that night?I was there... and I saw Wilt score 100 pts too... and, and have you met my wife; Morgan Fairchild? Yeah, yeah, that's right, Morgan Fairchild is my wife!
The same happened here in Charlotte with Eric Clapton at the Double Door in the late 80s or around 90. I've heard many claim to have been there. Didn't believe a one!
Double Door held more than 100; maybe 300? Sadly, I believe it's closed. Charlotte doesn't have enough good music spots. Neighbhorhood Theater and The Visulite primarily for my kind of music. Newer place called the Fillmore, but it's small and hot and doesn't have the ambience of an older club. Neighborhood is good, but probably the best and oldest live music venue in Charlotte is the country bar, Coyote Joes. It's big and can probably hold 1000-1500. Saw Old Dominion there a few years back with a date. She was hotter than the band!100 person venue that had 2,500 people that night?
I remember hearing Wilt say the attendance at his 100 pt game was only like 3000 folks and he estimated that like 10,000 people had told him they were there over the years. He had another prodigous claim of over 10,000 too, as I recall! Most prolific ball playa of all time?100 person venue that had 2,500 people that night?
