Lincoln Riley

I don't get the perception the Media seems to have of Riley. They keep talking about Him like He is a Coaching Genius even though he has never won anything significant and keeps finding ways to lose games. Last Year, there was criticism of the Team primarily due to their terrible Defense, and Riley seemed to avoid a lot of the flack. Maybe He is lucky that He Coaches in the land of fruits and nuts, where Professional Teams dominate the Headlines and College Football is an afterthought. I would submit that He would be under a lot more pressure if He Coached at a program in the South or Midwest.

He was under pressure at Oklahoma, which is why he bolted for USC.

You can’t argue his qb development success with Mayfield, Murray and Williams. They’ve all made a lot of NFL money because of his tutelage.

As far as in-game coaching and clock management, he’s proven to be horrible. Late leads vs UM, Minny and PSU all got away. That sequence Saturday vs PSU, of letting the clock run down while at the opponents 46 with 47 seconds and 3 TO’s was as brain dead of a coaching decision as I’ve ever seen. He let it get down to 14, then PSU called a TO. Next play? INT.

I was watching on my phone, so not truly dialed in, but I believe they were worried about giving the ball back to PSU in regulation if they didn't get first downs.

While that may be true, had You run plays, You might have gained yardage and set up a shorter more makeable field goal. Plus You still had three timeouts of your own that You could have used when You wanted or needed to to stop the clock and take the final field goal attempt. There is a difference between playing to win and playing not to lose. It doesn't matter how much time You leave on the clock if You miss the field goal. Run three plays make PSU take the timeouts. At the very least if You miss the final field goal attempt, You have Penn State 60 yards from their goal line, with minimal time on the clock and no time outs. I would be willing to take my chances with that.

1) I think he is a very good OC and developer of QBs but not a good head coach
2) His lack of CEO skills is making it tougher to find success, especially with a team that lacks personnel superiority vs the competition.
3) He is learning how to become a head coach on a large stage which is a tough row to hoe. He would have benefitted from being a HC at a Group of 5 school to learn CEO skills, manage the defensive side of the ball

That's UCLA fault for not determining his short comings before hiring him. At that level I don't think an AD should hire anyone without previous experience at that HC position. We found that out at IU.

if you were listening to the tv broadcast, even the two announcers were mildly questioning why he was just letting the clock tick away. But then the USC QB threw a pick with about 12 seconds to go....so maybe that was why.
