Let's keep an eye on DJ Nash

I wish I had your confidence about this. If somehow the talent on this team plays well enough to limp into the big dance I am not positive Woodson gets fired.
He's done, unless he gets in and makes a huge run. The chance of that happening is about zero.

He doesn't understand possession based basketball, which is what NCAA basketball currently is and he's just too old and too conservative to change.

He had his chance, he failed ...

What are you seeing that gives you any reason to believe that this team can even finish above .500 in the conference and/or make any kind of run in the conference tournament?

I haven’t seen anything but with our luck they will pull off a miracle and we get another year of BigFoot.

Yea, i'm confused by the arrogance and stubbornness. He was a great college player, but a pretty mediocre NBA coach. He was an ok NBA player, but basically an NBA journeyman. It's almost like he's looking down on the college game, even a little bewildered, and has no idea how to adjust to coaching it. Talk about a poor fit. Depressing.

He wouldn't be the first leader in any field that refused to change and dwelled in an obsolete past, certainly not the first basketball coach.

What's maddening is that the fixes are probably simple.

Start with: stop doubling the nail, double at the rim. Play drop with the big and give up the pull up 2. Wings stay home .. there's too many good shooters now to run that type of shit. Same goes for packline and no middle ..

Ok I'll bite. What is possession based basketball?

In the NBA getting to the playoffs is based on wins and losses. It doesn't matter if you win by 2 or lose by 50. It doesn't matter if you beat the worst team by 2 or by 100. Win/loss is all that counts.

Plus it's an 82 game season at 48 minutes per game vs a 31 game season at 40 minutes per. Less games less minutes the more important the games and minutes. In the NBA you can give a few away, take a few plays off, sit out a game ... 82 games are a grind. In the NCAA every game and minute counts.. can't give any away.

NCAA ball has always been like that because of the above .. it's a much shorter season.

Also .. Inclusion into the NCAA tourney is now based on metrics which include margin of victory, value of opponent and per possession efficiency. Every game, minute and possession is important. He doesn't understand that .. and it shows in how his teams play.

I could see where he has to win the final 4 or 5 conference games just to get on the bubble and actually doing so, while the ignorant fans cheer to limp into the Dayton play in game. That extends him for another year allowing for a 16-18 7-11 type season next year. I want to see IU lose and lose big this season to rid of this situation.

Got it; thanks for explanation

If we are able to limp into the tourney, it would provide Dolson and Woody the chance to retire Woody with dignity.

I still think you can run no middle…you just can’t foul

I only say that because those two defenses which used to produce teams with consistent top ten efficiencies have dropped the last few years and are struggling to produce even top 40 efficiencies..

As far as no middle, Baylor's been awful, Texas Tech and Mississippi haven't been very good either .. 40 to 80 plus range generally.

No middle can do the opposite of what it wants and create an open middle for drives and wide open straight line threes if rotations are slow or not aggressive enough to disrupt. It's probably better in this age than the other two but it's trending down as well.

Every type of overplay eventually gets countered. Zoom action is probably the most common no middle and packline counter.

I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t paid as much attention this year as normal. When I think of no middle..I do so with regards to the middle, high ball screen and the ball reversal to the opposite low wing/baseline.

The one thing I am not allowing is the drive to the basket by the guard off the ball screen. It creates the most bad outcomes…layup and foul (which causes two negatives). I know it’s taboo but I would consider early on helping off the strong side wing if needed. I would prefer to play drop with the big. If I’m helping I’m helping…not half assing and accomplishing nothing.

But it’s probably better to play drop and bring weakside wing defender to help with big dive to bucket….I’m giving up the skip to opposite wing and not allowing drive to middle off the skip.

Obviously…everything is team dependent.
