I grew up in Bloomington. My neighbors, thus friends, were pretty much all professors. Professorial social justice warrior types. I got a very early taste of cancel culture trying to communicate with some of my teenage friends as an adult and it was from them I learned the last bastion of liberal bigotry is Scientology. I’m talking about real people. Concerned citizens. Hard-working, successful, able, intelligent. Lawyers, doctors, professors, scientists.
That’s why you mainly see me here trying to tease out the common sense common ground. (With my serious posts.)
One of my more noteworthy conversations was with one of IU’s few members of the National Academy of Sciences, a family friend, someone well-versed in the scientific method and empirical knowledge. At length it became apparent he actually knew nothing about Scientology. I asked him where he got his information and his answer was one word, “Newspapers.” I appreciated his honesty. The irony was his unabashed certainty of his “knowledge.”
