I think he does have some underlying beliefs that tend to flavor what he likes to do, but I think he is swayed in one direction or another based on his perception of what is in it for him or the, I don't know, "loyalty" of the people or person wanting to push him in one direction or another.

Politics has always been transactional to some degree. Horse trading, tit for tat, compromise often being less about meeting in the middle and more about both sides getting something distinct that they want.

In one way, I think Trump’s ultranationalist positions are corrosive to geopolitical stability and hurts our ability to form and maintain alliances. Specifically in Europe which is still a major player although declining in stature.
