No, WVU won 9 games prior. And, CMW was in his 4th year with a $5mill+ NIL roster. They were projected last and and wound up tied for 7th, we were projected top 3 and wound up 9th.

and you think your decision is more valid than Scott Dolson who talked with both DD and BM and chose DD? What did BM say to you when you interviewed him that convinced you so?
How did Woody do his first season at IU? Better than DD's first season at WV. DD's lone season at WV is simply not a good argument and doesn't remove any doubts about him. Maybe he goes on to have a Huggy Bear or Beilein career at WV, maybe he doesn't: we will never know.
I think that between those two, Dolson made the "safe" choice, or McCollum declined.
I don't think this was a "horrible" hire and he may be a good coach here, nobody knows for sure. That said after a quarter of a century watching IU sh*t the coaching hire bed I can't help but be a bit cynical. Would any of us be surprised if 4-5 years from now that IU is looking again and McCollum is coaching the Hawkeyes and beating the brakes off the B1G.

The IU admin deserves no benefit of the doubt at this point, not after the last 25-30 years. Either the guy wins or he doesn't. I hope like hell he wins, but am skeptical until I see results. I understand a candidate like Beard has baggage, but I would certainly feel a lot better about his track record of actually winning at the big boy level.

I'll trust Dolson, who interviewed both, over your opinion. The guys on Field of 68 After Dark thought DD was a better fit for IU than BM was. But, they know both and in Doug McDermott's case, was recruited by and played under DD, so what would he know?
It was an incomplete analysis regarding BM: what if he goes on a run in the NCAAT? The NCAAT is a great test and opportunity to see what BM is made of. If BM wasn't interested, ok.
He took a team that was in 10th place in the BIG the year before and rocketed them up to 9th place. 7 wins to 9 wins. 29% improvement
DD took a team that was in 13th place in the Big 12 the year before and led them to 7th place. 4 wins to 10 wins. 150% improvement
That makes me feel so much better after wandering around in the desert for 25-30 years.
With a DD-like 150% improvement in conference wins, we'd go 25 and -5 next year!

Will come down to if he can get the right mix of talent to IU, something Woody couldn't do. I'm no bball expert but it seems like everyone runs the same stuff on offense these days for the most part (outside of the buddy ball woody preferred). I think it's the jimmy's and joe's more than ever.
I think we are to the point after the last 30 years where the hire is not going to excite anyone anymore. He will have to go out and prove he can win to get alot of fans to buy back in. A few hires would probably have excited people but one IU would never touch and the others were likely not leaving their programs. I assume he is better than woodson but that is a very very low bar.
Crazy thing is Woody did though. Just did it slow and without good shooting. Bad roster construction too.
One thing to keep in mind, something that was said here several coaching hires ago and still relevant today… Indiana has lost a lot of its sexiness as a place to coach and to play. When society was more of an agrarian culture, small plot farmers were sometimes overheard to say, “The old gray mare ain’t what she used to be.” Sadly, IU basketball has suffered the same, inevitable fate I’m afraid. Maybe this latest coach can turn things around, including recovering the perception that IU basketball once had in the eyes of the sporting world back in the days of Jack, the ass and such.
We have also made horrible decision after horrible decision. Not firing woodson last year cost us Dusty May.
It is admittedly subtle, but as I watched Woodson's decisions this year, it seemed more than once that Woodson was making decisions based on his personal evaluations that his players were just as good as NBA players that could immediately adjust to whatever new strategy he came up with on the fly.
Woodson's won-loss record isn't that bad maybe, but there were like three games in a row that IU could have won, but Woodson set up a critical shot by a guy that didn't deliver. Bad judgment by Woodson.
Maybe his girlfriend might also care if he were excited. That would be two.
I have no idea who this guy is or what he'll do at IU.
As a Kentucky fan, I absolutely knew who Mark Pope was, but also had NO IDEA what he'd do at UK. I wasn't very optimistic with the hire. I thought it was a mediocre hire at best. I even had IU fans tell me at the beginning of the year "welcome to mediocrity now that Cal is gone". After one season with him as the head coach, I'm beyond thrilled that he's coaching Kentucky and Calipari has moved on.
Louisville fans didn't know how Pat Kelsey was going to do in year one either, and most of them are thrilled with their new coach as well.
All this to say, a lot of IU fans have no idea how this is going to turn out with Darian DeVries. Give the guy a chance to prove he's capable before ripping him.

And Woody had TJD. I don’t see many people arguing that DD’s only season as a reason for his being hired. It’s more so that it’s being used as a measuring stick against his being hired. Realistically, it can’t be used for either argument.
It wouldn't surprise me if BMC returned to Drake ... he had opportunities to bolt NWMS earlier than he did.

Yep. McCullum was not going to get hired at IU this year when you read what Dolson said he wanted in a coach. In fact I am not sure he was even a serious candidate.
McCollum fit all those checkboxes?
One, win national titles in DII you certainly know how to manage or CEO an entire program. You have far fewer staff, you wear more hats.
Two, he's got a very credible rep for teaching.
Three, he's got a process and has ability to turn programs around. He managed the portal good enough to make the tourney his first year.
Four, his character gets good grades.
Not sure what criteria you think he didn't check?
There's only one, that you or others seemed to gravitate to, and that's length of D1 experience.
Lot of people saying he was close behind.
But, yeah, I see how Devries was a little better fit for the stated criteria. But McCollum has them too. He's good and I hope he doesn't end up in the B1G.
