IU "wins" fall exhibition opener...

I'm happy to see that Ellis is back. I thought he either would have used up his eligibility or signed a pro contract. In fact, it appears the nucleus of the offense is back.

The D-1Baseball post-game scouting report on the EIU/IU exhibition game focused on three position players and three pitchers for IU:

• Sophomore third baseman Josh Pyne hit a pair of home runs, scored three times and swatted five RBIs during the first seven innings of a 14-inning scrimmage against Eastern Illinois. At 5-foot-11, 190 pounds the right-handed hitter combines strength with bat speed for above average power to all fields. He also added an RBI single to right field sandwiched between his line drive shots over the left field wall. Pyne will be sophomore eligible by age for the 2023 draft and could be considered a Day Two prospect.
• Fourth-year junior catcher Matt Ellis also had a pair of hits, while adding another hard contact with a line out to right field. At 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, the left-handed hitter is country strong. He can muscle the baseball with authority through the four-hole or jolt it with power to his pull side. He also showed bat control with the ability to change plans and go the over way. Behind the plate Ellis showed near average arm strength and looked to be a capable receiver.
• Senior left field Hunter Jessee also joined the hit parade, smoking a triple his first at-bat, then added an RBI single his second. The speedy left-handed hitter finished the scrimmage with four runs and two RBI.

• Left-hander Ben Seiler got the starting nod on the mound for the Hoosiers. The 6-foot-6 junior worked easy from a high slot, filling the zone with 88-89 mph fastballs, low-80s changeups and a couple tight-actioned breaking balls that varied between 72-78, depending upon the shape. All of his pitches were released from the same window as he breezed through one inning of work in the evening. Six-foot-8 sophomore right-hander Luke Sinnard took the mound next for Indiana. The Western Kentucky transfer impressed with a leveraged high-spin fastball up to 94 mph and rpm in the 2700s. He also worked a quick inning, throwing 10 pitches for a three up, three down scoreless inning. High ceiling 6-foot-5 righty Connor Foley also impressed for the Hoosiers, working his heater up to 96 with clean arm action to a high three-quarter release point.
