There's a site called SRCBB that's very good on college basketball stats.......A couple of stats that I've come to appreciate are the offensive and defensive efficiency #s....ORtg & DRtg....

I profess ignorance as to how these #s are calculated, but I have noticed they generally reflect what the "eye test" would tell you.....now, 5 games is a very small sample size, so that has to be taken into consideration. One other caveat is that bigs generally score considerably higher in both #s than guards. Also, career #s include this year's #s.

For the ORtg #, the higher the better....for the DRtg #, the lower the better....I've also listed career #s on the older guys for comparison

Anyway, for IU players, this year only, to-date, here are the #s:

Offense, best to worst:
1. R. Thompson.......163.9.......car: 154.8
2. T. Jackson-Davis..155.1
3. A. Durham............148.4......car: 108.5
4. J. Smith................132.5.......car: 102.6
5. D. Anderson.........131.0.......car: 88.3
6. D. Green...............127.2......car: 98.3
7. J. Brunk.................123.4.....car: 120.1
8. J. Hunter................118.6
9. Rob Phinisee.........109.1.....car: 99.0
10. A. Franlin..............101.1
11. D. Davis..................87.9.....car: 113.5

Defense, best to worst:
1. R. Thompson...........84.2......car: 87.2
2. T. Jackson-Davis......85.1
3. D. Davis...................89.0......car: 99.7
4. J. Smith...................90.3......car: 101.6
5. J. Hunter..................94.1
6. J. Brunk...................94.3......car: 106.6
7. R. Phinisee..............96.8......car: 99.9
8. D. Green..................97.5......car: 101.8
9. D. Anderson............101.5.....car: 103.2
10.A. Franklin...............101.8
11.A. Durham...............102.1.....car: 105.7

For comparisons sake, here are the career #s for some BT notables:

--Cassius Winston 121.3.....100.5
--Kaleb Wesson 119.5.....95.6
--Matt Haarms............130.7.....96.9
--Nojel Eastern...........107.4.....99.0
--Aaron Henry.............110.6.....95.4 (and 148.7/80.7 for this year only)

Here are some conclusions....

--Our offensive efficiency through 5 games is very high.
--Race Thompson is pretty good. Not as good as the #s indicate, but pretty good.
--Durham, Green & Smith's offensive efficiency is way up over their career #s
--Maybe Brunk's offense is better than we think...his #s so far this year are actually down a little against this weak competition...so maybe he'll hold up ok offensively as he gets his footing. Defensively, don't expect much.

Just an fyi

.You can't compare them to other teams because of schedule disparity. Kenpom is SOS weighted, SR is not. Also they're very relative to role and usage. .

By my eyes, Anderson and Hunter need better defense overall. And one of the worst aspects of IU's team defense has been the initial drive. Help has been good, but IU looks somewhat slow on most drives. I think Rob and Devonte will improve that, they are the 2 best on ball.
Rebounding has been good. Ball movement much improved, FTs, same. Iu needs Hunter, and or Anderson to start being a consistent midrange and out threat. They are trying, but not there yet. Smith has done well to remember his strengths and play to them.
TJD has been outstanding. Almost taken for granted from the get go.

Also, something Al is doing well is remembering that the strength of the team is depth and transition offense. He has pushed uptempo to an advantage on several occassions. Good heady guard.

The defense amps up once Green or Phinisee is on the ball handler and when we go small. Also, Miller has went away from the packline a bit and extended his defense at times. Still in the lane on weak side, but if ball is top or strong, the off ball defender is often on his man, instead of cheating to the lane. That's straight man. So, predictably, teams are driving us and the bigs are not doing a great job of help. When they do, (the smaller lineups) we're tough to score against. When we stayed packed, they were burning us on three because of late closeouts . \

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

That was interesting but when I look at the numbers, Brunk's doesn't seem to be down at all. What am I missing?
