IU Hosts Ohio State; OSU converts PK in OT to win 1-0; add story

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University men's soccer team will look to push it's winning streak to five when the team plays host to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

SETTING THE SCENE
• The Indiana Hoosiers enter Saturday night's match on a four-game winning streak after beating IUPUI, 4-0, on Wednesday.
• During the streak, the Hoosiers have out-scored their opponents, 11-2, while posting three shutouts.
• With a win over Ohio State on Saturday, the five-match win-streak for the Hoosiers would be the team's longest since winning five-in-a-row en route to claiming the program's eighth NCAA Championship in 2012.
• Indiana last won six matches in a row during the 2006 season.

NEWS AND NOTES
• Femi Hollinger-Janzen was named one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. From the list of 30 candidates, a national media committee will select ten finalists for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award in October.
• Indiana sports one of the nation's youngest rosters in 2015 with 20 underclassmen on the team. The Hoosiers are tied for the ninth-youngest team in the country and rank as the youngest squad in the Big Ten.
• Despite the youth, Indiana returns 21 players from last year's roster, including 19 letterwinners from a year ago.

SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES
• The Ohio State Buckeyes come to Bloomington on four-game winning-streak of their own after beating Bowling Green, 2-1, in double overtime on Wednesday.
• During their streak, the Buckeyes have out-scored their opponents, 7-2, with a pair of shutouts.
• In the NCAA RPI rankings released on Monday, Ohio State is the second-highest ranked team in the league at No. 45. IU is the top-ranked team in the Big Ten at No. 24.
• In Big Ten play, OSU won at Michigan State, tied then No. 13 Penn State and lost at Northwestern on Sept. 11 – the last loss for the Buckeyes.
• Prior to the season, Ohio State was picked to fifth in the Big Ten in the poll conducted of the league's head coaches.

SERIES HISTORY
• In the overall series between the two programs dating back to 1973, Indiana holds a record of 40-4-3 against the Buckeyes.
• Entering Saturday's match, Indiana has won five-straight matches against Ohio State, including a pair of victories last season.
• In the regular season match, IU beat OSU, 2-1, thanks in part to penalty kick save from Colin Webb in the 89th minute.
• The two teams also met in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, with the Hoosiers advancing with a 2-1 win. In the 86th minute, Tanner Thompson converted a penalty kick to give Indiana the victory.

INDIANA CLIMBS IN RPI
• After debuting at No. 45 in the first NCAA RPI rankings release on Sep. 28, the Hoosiers moved up 21 spots to No. 24 in the latest rankings released on Monday.
• Indiana is the top-ranked team in the Big Ten, with Ohio State next in the league at No. 45.

GUTJAHR CALLED UP TO U.S. U-20 NATIONAL TEAM
• Jeremiah Gutjahr has been called up to the U.S. Under-20 National Team to participate in the Mercedes-Benz Elite Cup in Stuttgart, Germany.
• The U.S. Under-20 National Team will play Scotland on Oct. 9 in Reutlingen, Germany before facing Mexico in Stuttgart on Oct. 12.

WEBB IN GOAL
• Colin Webb continued his strong play on the season, posting his third shutout in the last four matches for the Hoosiers against IUPUI.
• The three clean sheets pushed the junior's total to five this season and his career total to 15.

HOOSIERS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
• In the NCAA rankings releases on Friday, Indiana ranks fifth in the country in shots per game at 17.82.
• Individually, Tanner Thompson ranks fifth in the nation in assists (6) and 18th in assists per game (0.55).
• Femi Hollinger-Janzen ranks 23rd in the country in total goals (6), while Colin Webb is 14th in the country in goalie minutes played (1043:23).

FEMI ON FIRE
• Femi Hollinger-Janzen is as hot as they come, scoring six goals over the course of the last eight matches for the Hoosiers.
• The senior has five goals in his last six matches after scoring twice in IU's 3-0 win over Evansville on Sept. 23 and once in the team's win over IUPUI on Oct. 7.

INDIANA IN THE BIG TEN RANKINGS
• In the Big Ten statistics releases on Friday, IU is ranked second in the league in shots (196), goals (19), points (56) and assists (18).
• Individually, Tanner Thompson leads the Big Ten in assists (6), while Colin Webb is tied for the conference lead in shutouts with five.
• Femi Hollinger-Janzen is tied for third in the conference with six goals and ranks second in the league in shots with 37.

HOOSIERS UPEND NO. 18 SAINT LOUIS
• Indiana defeated the No. 18 Saint Louis Billikens, 3-2, in double overtime at Hermann Stadium on Sept. 30 in St. Louis.
• Senior Kyle Sparks netted the match-winning goal, the first of his career, in the 105th minute.
• The win was the second this season for the Hoosiers, as IU also beat then-ranked No. 24 South Florida.

BIG TEN DOMINATION
• IU has won 12 Big Ten tournament titles, sharing the 1995 crown with Wisconsin.
• Indiana has also been crowned regular season champion 14 times, including nine-straight seasons from 1996-2004. IU won back-to-back regular season titles in 2006 and 2007 and re-claimed the regular season crown in 2010.

GUTMAN'S GOLAZO
• Freshman defender Andrew Gutman made the most of his first collegiate goal, scoring the match winner for the Hoosiers at Northwestern on Sept. 27.
• The goal was superb, as Gutman cracked a laser shot from 25-yards out on the left side, beating the Northwestern goalie to the top corner of the far post.

UP NEXT
• The Indiana Hoosiers will travel to College Park, Md. to face the No. 25 Maryland Terrapins.

Hoosiers Fall to Ohio State on Penalty Kick in Overtime

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to the Ohio State Buckeyes, 1-0, in overtime on a penalty kick in the 98thminute at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Saturday night.

With the loss, Indiana snaps it's four-game winning streak and falls to 7-4-1 on the season overall and to 1-3 in Big Ten play. With the win, Ohio State improves to 6-4-2 on the year and to 2-1-1 in league action.

For the Hoosiers, Femi Hollinger-Janzen and Tanner Thompson led the team with five shots apiece, with both getting two of those on goal. Matt Foldesy also had two shots on frame for Indiana.

IU dominate possession from whistle to whistle on Saturday night, out-shooting the Buckeyes, 19-5. Indiana had eight shots on goal for the match, while OSU had two. Corner kicks were 6-2 in favor of the Hoosiers, with fouls going Ohio State's way, 13-9.

In the first half, the Hoosiers were in control, out-shooting the Buckeyes in the first half, 10-2. IU had five shots on goal to just one for OSU, earning five corners to just one for Ohio State.

Thompson came out aggressive for Indiana, taking the team's first four shots. Thompson's best look at goal came in the 16th minute. Working on the right side of the box, the junior went left and then cut back right, firing a laser at goal but his shot was saved by the OSU keeper.

The Hoosiers' best chance at goal in the first half came off a turnover at midfield by the Buckeyes. After the giveaway, Rees Wedderburn had a breakaway, but his left-footed shot from 17-yards out hit off the right post, dancing along the goal line, glancing off the left post out of bounds for goal kick.

Later in the first, Billy McConnell played a dangerous cross from the right flank, finding Hollinger-Janzen, but his header from 12-yards left of goal was saved on a dive by the OSU goalie, keeping the match scoreless.

In the second half, Indiana had the better of the looks, but was unable to get the breakthrough score. In the second 45 minutes, IU out-shot the Buckeyes, 9-2, getting three shots on goal to none for OSU.

With just under 30 minutes left in regulation, Hollinger-Janzen nearly gave the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead. Attacking just inside the 18-yard box, the senior cracked a shot that was blocked, but rebound fell back to him. Hollinger-Janzen collected, firing a shot to the far left post, but the Ohio State keeper made a diving save to deny IU.

In the 82nd minute, the Hoosiers had a pair of chances from inside the Ohio State box, but a header fromGrant Lillard was saved, with the rebound coming to Matt Foldesy. The senior's shot was saved off the line by an OSU player, preserving the 0-0 tie.

In overtime, neither team mustered much offense until the 98th minute. On an Ohio State free kick from 45 yards out, the ball was sent in to the box. The ball appeared to be cleared by the Hoosiers, but the referee ran in and pointed to the spot, awarding a penalty kick to the Buckeyes on an Indiana foul.

Ohio State's Liam Doyle converted the penalty kick for the Buckeyes, giving Ohio State a 1-0 win in overtime at Armstrong Stadium.

The Indiana Hoosiers will head east to face the Maryland Terrapins on Friday, Oct. 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on BTN Plus.
