Why would we want that guy? 4 ncaa tourney games. Won one. Going to wvu to see how he does seems fitting.

He's been at Drake, who Ben McCollum just took over for. He's got a 71% winning percentage. He would have made the tournament this year, and still should have, but they lost their second leading scorer for all but 8 games this year.

He's also under 50. Dude can coach.

He will be 50 in a month. Was at a mid major and has won one NCAA tournament game. Went to wvu and missed the tournament. In ten years from now if he has a 70 percent winning percentage in a major conf with two final fours he’d be a good iu hire. Iu is on par with wvu now in hoops? Not by resources. Completely uninspired and just rolling the dice on a nobody

Didn’t Michigan hire WVU coach for football?
Exactly. After he was there 7 years. Won the conference multiple times. Won big bowl games. If this guy wins the conf 4 times is multiple coach of the year and has deep tourney runs THEN he should be a candidate

He just got to the next rung. Prove he can do it at that level then jump to the big boys

At this point, it would be a bunt for base hit hire. Certainly not a home run.

Meh...It's a slightly better hire than McCollum and Brownell, that's about it.

Resources is our only big advantage these days. We been average for years. This is on par with what Louisville and Kentucky just hired. In fact Kentucky probably has more reasons to complain given how superior they have been to us.

That has to be an advantage that shouldn’t be summarily dismissed

I have to say, I was wondering why people weren’t mentioning him earlier. If you’re impressed by McCollum’s resume, seems you’d like Devries, too.

Yeah, I think he's going to do well here. Dude can coach.

According to Goodman, we're gonna be getting his son as well.

How many big time cb teams have made a “home run hire” in the last 10-15 years, as judged at the time of the signing? A huge name that was a big winner in college and would continue to do so?

Calipari for Kentucky a while back. Anyone else?
It's not often, but to be fair there aren't many schools who are able to do it. Bill Self and Roy Williams are two examples from further back.

Some more recent examples of great hires are Beard at Texas and Ole Miss. Rick Barnes at Tennessee, Beilein at Michigan, and Pearl at Auburn. I'd put McDermott very close to that category.

The strategy should be to try and hire coaches who have been successful at Power 5 schools. Sampson fit that criteria and he was a great hire (besides the cheating). I thought Cronin at UCLA was bad hire, but he'a winning 69% currently and made the tourney every year, but one. People fall in love with all these mid major coaches, but most of them end up meh or flaming out.

Fired a guy who just missed the tourney to hire a guy who just missed the tourney and has one tourney game win to his credit
