I'm wondering if this game will be called off if the weather doesn't cooperate. I see where Nebraska apparently called their opener off last weekend because of thunderstorms.

It's a realistic concern. The weather model has been clear since Monday. Today is Thursday. If the Athletic Department is going to announce any alternative contingency plans they should let the fans know by late today or early tomorrow morning at the latest so people can plan accordingly.

Usually I don't trust the weather models what so ever but with a storm system this powerful I usually buy what they're selling and try to plan accordingly...

I may be wrong but I think this is supposed to be a rain event only.
If there is no lightening associated with it,I would assume the game will be played as scheduled.
I have very little confidence in the weather services when it comes to forecasting rain.
I’ve changed plans too many times based on their predictions and then it doesn’t rain.

I don't see a scenario that they cancel it unless there's a tornado. Thunderstorms can be played around. Last forcast I saw was a deluge of rain....nothing severe.....just a lot of rain. They'll play through that.

Sounds good and I agree about playing thru the rain but the projected thunderstorm (lightening) is the elephant in the room that can create game stoppages and/or suspension of play (as just recently occurred with Nebraska versus Akron at Nebraska's home opener)...

Cancel a football game because of rain??!! Ummmmm no, that’s not being considered.

This hurricane is widespread. It’s going to affect a lot of games Saturday, not just ours. You don’t cancel football games because of rain in central Indiana. We better be prepared to play in it.

I sincerely doubt cancellation will happen since rain only event. What would be cool to see is some type of innovative one time push to entice fans into the stands. Would be pretty cool atmosphere to have deluge with large crowd.

I don't know if any of you caught the video of the weather during that game but it was brutal. High winds, debris flying through the air, sideways rain, and you could barely see the other side of the stadium it was coming down so hard. I'm surprised the tornado sirens weren't going off.

It's not about playing in the rain or fan discomfort. The concern is a 7:30 pm Kickoff time and probable play stoppages due to the thunderstorms in the area. You get more than one of those and you're talking about suspension of play (they're not gonna keep playing until 5am...), and scrambling to find a bye weekend opponent.

The other issue at work here is the amount and duration of the rain. Drains backing up in and around the stadium, flooded parking lots and city streets, standing water on the field, flooding in the lower concourse, etc. If there is a high probability of steady, heavy rain from Friday on, I could see a cancellation possibility.

If it's just rain, I'll be there. If it looks like t-storms with likely game delays or a driving rain from start to finish I will hunker down at home and watch on tv. Fortunately, I'm just an hour away so I can make a last-minute decision. Glad I don't have to worry about more extensive travel as many fans do.

There is a 0% chance they cancel the game before start time on Saturday. Absolutely 0%. It’s rain.

Sure it is possible IF it’s accompanied by thunderstorms that they postpone the game, but that’s extremely rare. We’re going to just play through the rain as is often the case in football.

I was going to be involved with a large gathering this weekend at a public place in Bartholomew County.Although I haven't verified it I was told that Emergency Management was the reason that the venue is being closed all weekend. If true and Emergency Management in Monroe County suggests the game be cancelled I think most likely IU will follow that recommendation.

Extremely rare? You haven't been to or have watched many football games over the past ten years have you.

Nebraska just shut down their Home Opener last weekend.

To simply discount the possibility (especially when there's an 80% probability of it occurring) is foolish in the extreme...

Lightning in the area (within 6 miles) is an "extremely" common reason for game stoppages...

Game postponements due to weather are extremely rare.

They will not cancel a game in advance of the storm system. It could be like watching the Rutgers game last year. Stoppages or a delayed start could be a realistic scenario for fans if lightening is spotted. They aren’t going to call off this game in advance. Every team in the Midwest is going to be dealing with this from Iowa City to Columbus Ohio. It’s going to be raining in the Midwest off and on starting tomorrow at noon through Sunday night. Every school is going to have to combat this. If it is heavy showers, they play through it.

If I was the coaching staff, I’d get them out on the practice field today and then have them start running plays under a deluge of 4 fire hoses shooting water into the air and onto the field.

I am with Fp here, the weather forecast didn't make me even consider a cancellation. Lots of rain will make for a wet game but that's about it. Sure if there is a 2 hr lightening storm, then we are in trouble but odds aren't likely that happens. So far all I see is just rain, no thunderstorms.

If I were CTA though, I would be putting together a few packages that include Taylor back at QB. An option offense can kill it when it's raining out. Sitting back and trying to sling the ball won't get you very far.

My biggest concern in all of this are the puddles that will be on our new SEZ complex. They cannot simply have puddles for this opening game.

There's a hidden positive. Should be a great stress test on the roofing and drainage associated with the new south endzone complex...

Was being a bit TIC there. A poster earlier was dismayed with water on the entrance and patio area after a recent storm.

Nebraska did not cancel the game before it started but went through a long weather delay.

How many football games have been outright cancelled the last 10 years due to rain? I’d say way less than 0.5% of games. Is that not rare to you?

I remember a couple years ago ND playing literally in the eye of a hurricane right on the coast of the Carolinas. I forget who they were playing.

They’re not cancelling this game.

OK guys I'm done wasting your time and mine with this.

My only point in even discussing it was to give Fred's minions the heads up that they do have options (however unpalatable they may be). Those are options are pretty well expiring in the next hour locally (they'd want to get it on the local 5pm news).

Very few teams in the country have the potential option to move their game indoors to a stadium 50 minutes north of them.

Guess it's been decided that's a crummy idea. I hope that's the right call...

Jimmy Irsay loves this post.

I do remember sitting through the monsoon bucket game with ARE. Water was rushing down the stairs.

The field actually took the water relatively well considering they don't have the pump systems like Iowa. The sidelines were a lake late in the game.

It’s not an option. IU has no rights to Lucas Oil Stadium. None. And the Colts open their season Sunday at noon.

I don’t care if it was the national championship, they’re not going to have a college game on their field less than 12 hours before they open their season.

Plus IUFB needs the home game revenue. We wouldn’t give up the revenue even if the Colts invited us there.

That was at Clemson during a hurricane

Here’s the clips of that ND game....played on a grass field.

I'm really worried that we are more likely to lose because of this weather. Maybe a monsoon helps us best OSU, but I think we are the better team here and the rain only serves to minimize that advantage.

I was at that game. The bathrooms were the only warm place to stay. The women were packed in the restrooms trying to stay warm.

I bet. I really don't remember being as cold as just soaked to the skin and all of the gear going back in the bottom of the coach dripping wet.

This is another area where "social media" and the internet has not been helpful.

In the past, we'd just live our lives and be prepared.

Now, a week out from anything, we can get weather reports.
We obsess all week.
99% of the time, it sounds worse than it is.

Guaranteed our crowd will be down because by now everybody expects armageddon-ish flooding and lighting.

I've already made funeral plans, since I'll probably drown on the way home, if I ever make it to Bloomington!

I miss Marcia Yockey.
She'd have told us exactly when it would start and stop.

Alrighty then.

Marcia Yockey scared the hell out of me when I was a child, but I still remember that giant map of the US with those hand-drawn frontal boundaries and temperatures splattered all over it. My grandparents swore by her forecasts. She was a legend in southern Indiana. Quite a blast from the past - a name I haven't thought about in forty or fifty years.
