I saw some sham interview where he apologized today. I believe he’s still suspended? No other coach in CBB would still be employed if they threw a punch at another coach in a handshake line. He should have been fired immediately. Ridiculous

Actually would rather have Howard coaching than Frank Barone. Frank knows what he is doing.

The university will have big problems if he does something regrettable. Clearly he lost control and showed a violent side that is a danger to those around him. And that would be the case even without him being as physically imposing as he is.

He was only suspended for the rest of the regular season games (which I believe was 5 games). He will coach in the game against IU.

Verified. I saw something on mlive.com last night saying he will be coaching.

He was only suspended for the regular season. And I agree, it’s a complete joke and disgrace.

I think of a different character, but same guy.

Well no actually, what Howard did was verbally make it clear that he wanted no handshake or apology or explanation and wanted past Gard, then Gard tried to stop him by physically putting his hands on him, That's technically called assault when somebody says don't touch me and it escalated because he did do what Howard asked him not to. Howard's suspension was regular season, which this is not. We can thank Gard again for the bloodbath that will probably take place once he is back on the bench and players all fired up.

Funny I just saw a FB post where Gene went down to visit Bob yesterday or today. You know they hated each other on the court. Compare that to today. Howard ? Had it happened in RMKs days I think we all know who the loser would be but can never see Knight doing that in a game because he respected it too much. Now had they met outside somewhere? Best Juwan not go duck hunting with Bob

The definition of assault varies by jurisdiction, but is generally defined as intentionally putting another person in reasonable apprehension of an imminent harmful or offensive contact.

You have the most illogical takes on just about everything. There was no excuse for what Howard did. It wasn’t Leadership 101, it was Dumbass 101.

What Howard did was hardcore ghetto. Having said that it was nothing compared to the verbal assault that RMK got away with for years.

Well Howard was pissed off and said I don't want anything to do with you. Not like Gard did anything that bad, but you don't try to impose what you want on someone that is pissed off at you. It escalated from there. It was basically a combination of Gard doing what he did by grabbing him, and his assistants saying shit that pissed him off further. Howard was always pretty even keel, something was definitely said, and he didn't punch anybody, he bitch slapped him and it was almost certainly deserved over what was being said and Gard trying to stop him from just walking away. Note he didn't take a swipe at anybody other than the assistant and between Gard grabbing him when he didn't want to discuss things and what Badger asst..said, that's pretty close to assault. I don't care if he's 6'10, when you are 50, situations like that are threatening

Howard grabbed Gard’s shirt and threatened him. (Not the first time Howard has done this). That was before the punch. You are making Howard into the victim here. You are so wrong. Howard initiated the violence. Gard had little to do with the situation escalating. That’s all on Howard.

That's correct and Howard was wrong and Gard was wrong to try to stop him from just a blow by out the door, the real blame lies with Gard's assistant who escalated things and that's on Gard and Gard for just not letting him go bye, fo, in the first place. Gard grabbed onto him first when Howard just wanted a blow by, not a big deal what he did, but it gave enough delay that Gard's assistant had enough time to start it all against somebody that was already pissed and just wanted out of there. Howard was not the one to initiate physical contact though, that was Gard

assault for touching someone in a handshake line, where, you know, the idea is to touch others? Mmmmmkay...

Gard didn't need to grab him, but I totally get why he would. The penalties make it clear who was at fault and it wasn't Gard.

It totally was Gard's fault, Howard didn't want a handshake and Gard knew that. It is extremely clear that Howard just wanted out of there and then Gard tries to stop him physically a couple times, watch it. It was just enough of a delay for the WI asst to mouth off and create a situation

You do understand the purpose of the handshake line, right? As a head coach, making what 3-4 million, you put on your big boy pants and shake the other coach's hand, period. I've watched it. If I was Gard, and I'm going to be coaching against this guy for the next 10 years, I'd want to know what the f the deal was too. Now, maybe I let it go and call him later, but I'd definitely call him, unless I just already wrote him off as a douche. Howard is representing a state U... u shake the other coach's hand ( a blow by is fine), and move on. You need to watch it. The WI asst was only stepping in to defend his HC once Howard starts spouting off and pointing fingers. Krabehnoft isn't that old, so I'm sure he felt obligated to "protect the old guy". You're the one who needs to rewatch or rethink. The penalties meted out were right and reflective of who's at fault. If Howard just does what he should, there's no issue.

That's quite an interesting way to spin things.

It's not spin, it what happened, watch it. Howard was definitely trying to walk on by and then he's accosted by Gard twice and then subject to the mouths of their assistant. He just wanted to go to the locker room, and not shake hands over their shenanigans with a big lead. I would have punched the f'r too if they grabbed me, nobody explains why Gard felt necessary to grab him .. wtf is that?

If Howard didn't want to be in the handshake line and interact with Gard, he should have kept on going into the locker room as was his initial action. He made his way down to the end of the bench and then decided to turn around and participate in the whole thing.

Gard should have read his body language and let him go, but Howard was happy to escalate it once Gard stopped him with the elbow grab and tried to explain.

Howard also shouldn't have been spun up about a timeout when he was continuing to play his starters in full court D.

what part of HANDSHAKE LINE don't you understand?

... and the "shenanigans" were him still pressing down 17 with under a minute left when Gard put his backups/walkons in. It's the end of the season and it's my perogative as a Coach to put in my subs and take a timeout and "coach" them on getting the ball up if you're stil pressing me. Now, I may do that 100% to piss you off and tell you indirectly I think you pressing my backups at this point is BS, but it's still within the rules and fine. Again, if it's so important for Howard to get to the locker room, then call off the press and let the clock run. Also his fault, which is why Gard was probably irked.

Does anyone think if the roles were reversed, the WI coach would be back on the bench already?

Pretty simple...Don't press the subs when you are down 15 with 15 seconds left, that's what started it all. If Michigan is not full court pressing, this doesn't happen. Gard wanted to shake hands, Howard was acting like a big baby about the TO and had poor sportsmanship! Even if Gard did grab Howard, JH did not need to act like that. Howard is the one who escalates the whole situation by getting in the face of Gard, pointing his finger in Gard's face, and grabbing Gard by the shirt.
