So I'm out driving today listening to the radio and Guy Releford, (The Gun Guy) attorney is on talking about a recent run in he had downtown. Guy is 6'3" 240 and is approached by some mid 5 foot guy who demands money. He ignores him and the guy starts following him around Monument Circle until he turns around and confronts the guy. This is mid day during the week. This dude is yelling all kinds of give me some money or I'm gonna kick your ___. He has a stare down with the guy and the dude walks away yelling. He mentioned panhandlers, more homeless, and a newer type of aggressive behavior after covid and the downtown riots.

He then interviews the head of the F.O.P. here in Indy Rick Snyder who adds crime against cops is up 63% since last year and 17 cops have been ambushed and murdered already this year. He went straight into judges letting criminals back on the streets and its creating a huge problem. He said cities like Bloomington, Kokomo, Fort Wayne and Lafayette are seeing increased numbers and it will get worse unless something is done. Blames judges and decreased cop funding for the increases.

He also said that this past weekend 8 people were killed here and another 13 injured in one of the worst violent crime weekends ever in Indianapolis. I'm listening to this thinking wtf. What the hell is going on? Does this concern anyone else?

Yes..., and anyone who thinks everything is still "okay" in Indianapolis just because they were lucky enough to get to and from their car safely on Mass Ave is clueless... (and they were "lucky" because a guy was shot right next to Mass Ave last month)...

Dim Mayor & Administration = out of control crime... That sad equation has once again shown itself to be valid...

As a downtown resident who has a five minute stroll to Mass. Avenue, as I walk along the Cultural Trail and look at the housing boom (apartments, condos, townhomes, etc) and eat/drink/listen to live music at some of the new restaurants opening weekly, the only thing out of control is the parking on Mass. Avenue.
Go ahead and stay away, though. Uptight out of towners are usually annoying.

Edit to add: I don't want to seem like I am trivializing the events of last weekend...the gun violence was bad in every way, and it was a horrible weekend for the Indy metro area, as it is anywhere, big city or small town, when criminals murder innocent victims. The father who was shot in front of his family at his daughter's birthday party was particularly tragic.

Oh, and from 1993-2013 gun violence went down in the US. You gonna praise democrats for that?
The most recent metric I can find for Indianapolis (last spring [google it]) had us with a higher homicide rate than Chicago!!!

See any correlation...?

I'm from Southbend; they are ranked the number 10 most dangerous city in the US for 2022 by the neighborhood scout. WTF is right. What's going on, no regard for human life. We are so tribal now everyone is going into their own corner, no one is talking.

Talking...ding ding ding. That's what worked for my community years ago. Everyone joined together and communicated. Problem was solved. It took some time but it stopped the issue.

The problem is there to see, but we won’t look.

Too many black young men have no fathers, no home, no education, no structure, and no discipline. But they do have gangs guns and drugs. Meanwhile the idiots in Washington keep saying white racism is the #1 problem in America.

Black lives don’t matter to our leaders.

In Florida now. Spent last night with a niece and her boyfriend. One is school counselor and the other a school MH worker. They are both hooked ito national online communities in their fields. Both had good things to say about how Florida handled schools and Covid compared with the likes of NY, California and several New England states. They credit DeSantis and local boards. I asked them about don’t say gay. They shrugged and said it was a non issue. The biggest issue facing kids is grief from loved ones dying from Covid.

Where are you? Sarasota? Does it feel more crowded? Traffic and shit? Apparently Tampa is the hottest housing market in the country

A week on the beach near Sarasota and a more time in Sebring area. Yes, definitely more crowded. Been down here this time of year for more than 20 years and this is most crowded ever. My favorite fish joint at the docks in Cortez had an hour line both times I tried. Used to be just walk up and order. But I did have plenty if grouper anyway. Discovered Owens Fish Camp in Sarasota a few years ago. Pricy but excellent.

Louisville is terrible with Black on Black crime, they report deaths almost daily and usually multiple. The sad part of it is a post like yours is usually construed as "racist" when in fact it is truth and most would like to see the trend end. One of the biggest problems is the use of "race" and being labeled a "racist" IMO it makes many operate in smaller circles and as one poster said "back into their own corners".

Rick Snyder and Marion Cty prosecutor Ryan Mears have had a long running PR battle. Snyder has been very critical of the prosecutor's office for a long while. Mears hasn't been very effective, for sure. He's up for re-election this year.

Sure, I will give credit.

The Democrats passed the now "racist" Clinton crime act in 1994. Which threw a whole bunch of people in prison, introduced 3 strikes, etc. The Obama came along in 2014 and gutted the bill so that low level crimes were not punished as harshly. Crime has been on the increase since. Funny that.

So, what is everyone's zip code?
46204 here. Love it.
The pot holes do suck, though.

Heh, I imagine living in a gentrified portion of Downtown Indy where the demographics track young, white, professional, single/couples without children with rents and home prices 50-500% higher than the surrounding zip codes can give one a sense of security.

https://www.unitedstateszipcodes.org/46204/

That said, when considering it's surrounded by 46201, 46202, 46203, 46205, 46208, 46218, 46222 and 46225 I think I will take your advice and stay away.

Wasn't it the Biden crime bill? Seems to be selectively enforced.

While I do not live in a gentrified neighborhood, I do admit to being surrounded by the zip codes you mention. I worked in a few Near East neighborhoods (out on the Far East side now, and it makes the Near East side look like Carmel), especially just east of 65/70 for decades.

I was just expressing that I thought it was funny to see a bunch of guys who never set foot in the Mile Square trying to paint a vivid picture of how it resembles ThePurge meets Mad Max down here. It's not.

I will say, though, if you plan on following my advice, my post did some good.

Downtown is usually not too bad, the area to avoid is bordered roughly by Washington St to the south, 42nd to the north, High School rd to the west, and German Church to the east. That is the murder band swath across the near north side of Indianapolis that runs most of the way across Marion Co.

I'm not one of those guys. My mom grew up in the Lockerbie Square neighborhood in the 30's and 40's and my dad Highland Park neighborhood. The wife spent 30 years working downtown near the Murat Temple and I spent over a decade working across from the City County Building. In my 6 decadesspent on this earth I have lived in exactly 3 zip codes, all adjoining (46219, 46229 and 46140). So I too have a certain level of familiarity with the Downtown/East Side area(s). While you may not consider where you live to be gentrified, the numbers seem to bear it out.

From 2000-2010 the overall population in 46204 dropped by 23%, but the share of white population rose from 46% to 63%. And judging by the demographics for 46204 I linked earlier, combined with my experiences (albeit anecdotal at best) seeing the same growth you spoke of vis a vis the new condo, townhome and apartment development going on, I am left to assume that trend continued. Seems like gentrification to me /shrug.

And I agree with you, there certainly isn't a Mad Max/Purge vibe going on in many areas of downtown...but you have to travel through it get there (you can sprinkle in a bit of Deliverance too).

OMG so I quote a story and now I'm f*cking Cyrus...I just told the story Bulky then the FOP dude comes on with a cop kill stat followed by an horrible weekend in Indy with stats. He also mentioned the other cities will start feeling it. It caught my attention, but please don't kill the messenger. CAN YOU DIG IT!

I have family that lives in Irvington and that area is fine. Crime just gets pushed around to whatever neighborhood accepts it.

How's that for a loaded statement.

Crime is pretty much everywhere. Things like burglary, theft, vandalism, drugs, etc. are found in differing levels in every community. Honestly the main thing we are talking about is murders. That's what people are usually most concerned with. Living in an area like the father in Indy over the weekend where just going to your job can get you killed.

Not even close to accurate.... maybe 10% of that area.

How would you describe the area of blue markers across the near north side that runs from one end of Marion County to the other?

Edit to add: You can go back for years and the blue markers always congregate in the same areas.

The east side problem areas are a pie shape.... north of I70, east of fall creek, south of 42nd st and west of mitthoffer. In between Rural and Emerson on direct east side is still a bit rough too.... though been trending better.

Post/42nd area by far the worst in town.

I mean your area includes places like Old Northside, Herron Morton, Fall Creek Place, Irvington etc... that are very fine areas. Even places like Little Flower/ Emerson Heights are just fine. Indy is very much a block by block kind of city.

I haven't been to Indy in about 5 years but I remember driving down 38th street being pretty scary at night.

As somebody who has lived in Marion County for the past 10 years, you hit the nail right on the head: recycled Chicago boogyman created by the right. Somebody else said Marion County varies from neighborhood to neighborhood, and they are correct. There are some really nice areas in Marion County, and there are some really tough areas. Some of the nicest homes in the state are on N Meridian St., and some of the toughest neighborhoods are on the east and west sides.

As somebody who has also done criminal defense work in and around Marion County for a number of years, I can assure that crime is generally found with the have nots and in the areas where the have nots reside. Republicans normally don't want to hear or address this because it doesn't coincide with their politics: hence, boogymen. But, it is always interesting to hear people that don't live somewhere try to define it.

Doesn't Indy have a Democrat mayor? Sounds like Dems don't want to hear about it or address it either.
