I'd put odds on the fear that there would be small crowds. I feel like a lot of people were going to sit this one out regardless and the prospect of having to stand outside in the cold for hours on end would keep even more people away.

Trump will brag about how many people come to the inauguration regardless, but I wouldn't be surprised if the actual crowd size is the smallest in modern history.

My dad loves the inauguration and everything that goes on around it. I lived in the DC area for both Obama inaugurations and he came for both those. Loved every second of it. He went to Trump's first inauguration and even before there was any controversy about crowd size, he said it was clear that Trump's had a much smaller crowd. He told me when Trump got elected he didn't think it was worth going because 1) he didn't want to be caught up in anything crazy and 2) he didn't really feel like seeing Trump inaugurated again.

For what it's worth I'm pretty sure he didn't vote for either guy.
