I want to give the benefit of the doubt to co-president Musk…

MAGA gang is right this time.

Has the thought ever occurred to TDS people or MAGA people that they’re bizarro versions of each other?

For what it's worth, this is definitely something out of a bad Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm skit. Some clueless dude giving the Nazi salute on stage thinking he's showing love to crowd while everyone is slightly uncomfortable with what it appears he's doing could be a cutting room floor joke from Larry David.

Eh...words and gestures mean things. Do I think he's a covert Nazi? No.

Do I think he did this on purpose to troll people? Yep. His X feed pretty much tells you who he is and this type of trolling would very much be on-brand for him. No one serious is calling him Hitler, but it was a stupid thing to do.
You're still going with this...even after finding out that he said "my heart goes out to you" after doing the gesture?

He wasn't even trolling people -- and that's what I thought he was doing when I first saw it. Do you know why I thought that? Because at that time I was unaware that he literally said "my heart goes out to you" right after doing it...which pretty obviously paints the gesture in a very different light.

This is why I said that this is going to become the "good people on both sides" thing all over again. To this day, there are still people who genuinely believe that Donald Trump was praising neo-Nazis at Charlottesville.

Another (less nefarious) example is the belief that persists today in many quarters that Al Gore claimed to have invented the Internet. I still occasionally run into people who joke about that. That's not what Al Gore said.

Thus my point about TDS and MAGA. When you become so set in a false belief that even the most basic of countering facts can't move you an inch, the problem isn't Trump (or Musk, or Gore, or Biden, etal). The problem is the guy in the mirror.

Again, it wasn’t even a Nazi salute.

You look totally ridiculous clinging to this.

He made a gesture that looked a hell of a lot like a Nazi salute. Twice.

You look ridiculous trying to explain the nuance of a Nazi salute. It's weird that you can't even admit that, yes, he's not a Nazi, but it wasn't a good look to do that.

There is no “nuance” involved here. It’s either a Nazi salute or it isn’t and the gesture Musk made was NOT a Nazi salute, no matter how badly you want it to be.

That fact coupled with Musks OWN WORDS make this one of the dumbest “controversies” I’ve seen in some time.

And I’m surprised you can’t admit that.

Oh, you're certainly right that it looked like a Nazi salute.

But doesn't it matter what his intent was? Like...what he was trying to convey when he made the gesture? Or is it just the gesture itself?

Many years ago, my son (who was about 3 at the time) got a small cut on his middle finger. So he ran over to me all worried and promptly showed me his extended middle finger....as if to say "Dad, look, I hurt my finger."

Do you think my 3 year old son was flipping me the bird?

Your 3 year old son didn't have life experience or wherewithal to understand what that gesture meant, but by virtue of you bringing it up, you and everyone who saw it certain understood why a kid innocently doing that would bring about a response. It's pretty clear what that means even if your son didn't understand it. And no he wasn't flipping you the bird because he didn't understand it.

I think Elon Musk knows what a Nazi salute is. Again, I'm not saying he's a Nazi. My best guess is that he was trolling. Or as someone else pointed out, maybe it was the aspergers.

It's not that my son didn't understand what the gesture meant -- though you're right he didn't.

What matters is the intent of the gesture. My son's intent was to tell me that his finger hurt.

And it really ought to seem obvious here that Elon Musk's intent was to say "my heart goes out to you." He put his hand on his heart...he pointed then "threw it out" to the crowd. And then he literally said the words "my heart goes out to you."

And I'm 100% certain this was his intent. Whether Asperger's played any role, I don't know. But it doesn't matter...because of the words he uttered.

What if he said 'my heart goes out to you' and instead of doing what appeared to be the Nazi salute he flipped the crowd off? Would you think that he was just showing love for the crowd then?

Again, there are some universal signs and hand gestures that just about anyone gets. If you walked into Starbucks this morning and did what Elon Musk did, I doubt many people would find it endearing and that you were just showing love for everyone in the coffee shop.

No, because there would be no correlation between the flip-off gesture and the sentiment that "my heart goes out to you."

But there is correlation between hitting your chest and miming the throwing of your heart out to the crowd.

Without any context, I agree with you.

But we have the luxury of context here -- assuming we're willing to consider it. And I guess you just aren't.

Odd way of throwing out his heart. When I do it, my hand opens up and goes straight out.

I agree with Ohio on this one. What Musk did was intentional and he was trolling. And, of course, he will deny while letting neo-nazi X accounts run wild.

You guys are unbelievable. 😂

You’re saying that putting your hand on your heart and mimicking throwing it at the crowd is an odd way to act out .throwing your heart out to the crowd?

Guys, I don't know for sure, but what I do know is I don't trust him. Maybe he got a little too excited with his hand gesture. When I do it, my motion does not look like that. Honestly, this is the last and only place I'll even have this discussion.

I've already moved on because this doesn't impact things that matter like the price of eggs. You know, things that matter.

Price of eggs?

Publix was wiped out of eggs yesterday, given the closure of egg producing plants in Georgia due to that (made up?) bird flu nonsense.

Thanks, Don!

No but Musk does matter. I saw an instagram thing or something and it was a hotel in space. The poster wrote under it: I just want health insurance

Musk was going on about mars. I’m all for space exploration. The arts. Aspirational things. But that’s his dream. People didn’t vote for mars. They voted to close the border have cheap gas and Oreos and kill off soros woke bs dei and bail projects

No one voted for mars. People got whacked the last 4 years with stupid shit. They don’t give a F about mars. Musk is definitely not off limits

If you say so. Yesterday was the first time in over 50 years the Nazi salute was confused with saying “my heart goes out to you.”

What a world.

Oh, and these guys seemed pretty happy about the Nazi salute too.

Just as an aside, can somebody explain how “the price of eggs” became a thing for Dems?

I come across it a lot. And, like here, it always seems to be used a little bit snarky. Is this to downplay or mock the significance of inflation in last year’s election?

IOW, are you suggesting the price of food staples shouldn’t matter?

Anyone defending this gesture are being so obtuse. All the “wEll AkShewAllYs” screaming that it’s a Roman gesture? F**k off. Thats like insisting the swastika is actually an ancient Hindu symbol of peace and prosperity. That he included this obvious gesture with “my heart goes out to you” somehow reframes the context is moronic. Is he smart or is he dumb? He’s either a dumbass (possible) or he’s like anyone that’s been alive for a minute that has a brain and knows exactly what he’s doing, which is trolling. (And no, I’m not saying he’s a nazi now either)

Maybe he’s a big Celine Dion fan and he meant “my heart will go on.”
My son’s friend was bitching about TikTok being shut down and I told him to hold on a second. I put on that song in the background and told him to continue.

All the adults started howling laughing as he continued to whine about how important TikTok is to him with Celine crooning in the background. It was perfection.

It wouldn’t have been confused if people would’ve watched the entire video and not been predisposed to a negative perception of Elon Musk.

Again, I know why the mistake was made. I made it myself! That’s why I said that he was probably just trolling. Because, yes, it does very much look like a Nazi salute.

But then I learned the context and immediately knew what he was really doing.

So I’ll defer to our Cooler conservatives to tell me what in the actual f*&k Elon Musk is doing here.

As some comments mention on that Instagram post, he would be arrested in Germany for that.

I could see him trying to be some dickhead troll, but he’s not stupid enough to not know what that is.
My guess is that he was giving liberals something to talk about. 🤣

Why would anyone who’s not a Nazi, or someone who would never want to be mistaken as a Nazi, use a full on Nazi salute (twice) in front of a crowd of people?

It's because Trump at least partially ran on bringing down the prices of eggs and other groceries. In addition to walking that back, none of the stuff that seems to have taken priority for him, ie. renaming the Gulf of Mexico, pardoning seditionists, etc, don't seem to have much to do with his key campaign promise.

I'll add the number of posts on this forum blaming Biden and Dems for the high cost of eggs, groceries, gas, housing, etc. These are definitely real problems for most Americans as wages remain stagnant and the cost of living increases.

I just want to make sure these issues are discussed over the next four years because ending wokeness has nothing to do with the price of my eggs, which I'm allergic to.

Ah. Well, what challenger wouldn't run on inflation when the incumbent is tangled up in it? Carter ran against Ford on it -- and, well, Reagan ran against Carter on it 4 years later.

We should get used to it if we're unable to get government spending down. Because, at the end of the day, that's the root cause. There isn't enough demand from traditional buyers in the Treasuries market. So where does the Treasury turn to sell their bonds? The Fed. And where do they get their money?

And even with these conditions there are still people who are viscerally protective of federal spending.

That’s why watching Musk jump up and down about mars was bad optics. Might as well pull Dana out there to announce a crossover fight with Conor and THE PROBLEM CHILD
