I don’t understand the Brownell hate.

If we don’t hear something in the next 48 hrs, our new coach is in the field of 64 ( and we can bury the whale rumors once and for all )
I wouldn’t think they’ll “crowd” the Woodson formal retirement, on the same day they announce the new coach.

So the first hint might be how quickly the Woodson retirement is official.

To respond to the OP......I don't think there is hate for Brownell. Fact is....Clemson is having a great season. Three of their losses were in overtime....and most were by just a few points. The issue with Brownell or coaches like him is the frequency of mediocre seasons. IU fans have had a belly full of that for a very long time. It is at the heart of the vicious cycle we are stuck in. Thats the friction point. Now Brownell might be better than what we see. I don't know how he would do at IU except that he would do better than Woodson. Beyond that, I don't have a clue. I've said hiring him wouldn't be a failure....if that is where we end up. But......there are a few coaches ahead of him, imo. I for one am way past believing that IU will land a major D1 home run hire. Not gonna happen. I do think IU "can" hire a coach who can compete at the highest level. I am doubtful that IU will.....based on track record. I do think IU has to rebuild its basketball culture in the short term....and its facilities in the long term. But that's a separate issue.....at least I hope it is. I've also said that I think Brownell will be the eventual hire......and I'll stick with that prediction.

Solid coach. Dude is at a football school that doesn’t GAF about basketball. Has experience. From southern Indiana. Not 100 yrs old. And his record the last 3 yrs is impressive.

Would not be upset with this hire. I can see him having real success here.
Look.. You are never going to please everyone on this crazy forum or overall fan base.

I looked hard at what he has done & it's good.. He is a good coach & is Ok at sustaining year to year consistency...

I think that this board is looking for an elite coach & elite program builder.

If you tier coaches, he is in the middle of the road vs. current Big Ten coaches if you slot him in a current poll.

Just saying..

If our goals are a .500 record, first-round loss in the conference tournament, and NCAA tournament bubble, just say so when you announce the next coach. Then nobody will have any basis for complaint. But then why did we fire Woodson? And why would we want just an incremental improvement?

I thought it was stated on Twitter that IU not play in the NIT or crown. So the season is over. Which means Mike Woodson is over. I don’t know what else we would be waiting for. I wasn’t aware there was gonna be some sort of formal Mike Woodson retirement party.

This is almost exactly what I heard about Crean. I was not a fan of the hire and asked if IU fans would be happy if he reproduced the results he had a Marquette.
I was told by many that once he got to IU, the resources IU has will let him excel. He did win a couple of BT titles which no one seems to be able to do now but no E8 or FF.
Brownell is who he is and he only wins 60% of conference games.

NO THANKS.
Crean’s big issue was that he won 2 outright Big Ten titles but then floundered in the tournament. Once you set an expectation by actually doing something, you’re held to that.
A pattern was developing with him that wasn’t going to cut it. He followed up the 2012-13 year with 2 crummy seasons. He was on thin ice when he won the conference in 2015-16 but immediately followed that up with a clunker. There was no stability with Crean.

I will say this for him: he was 10x better than Woodson.

First the coach has to have had success at a P4 school. Then IU needs a coach with a big personality that is comfortable being visible at football games, show up at events around the state, meet the high school coaches in the state and to promote the program. A big personality.

Brownell and McCollum aren't a good fit. Beard and Wade are better choices. A mid major coach with a long history of success is okay with the right personality.

FWIW I saw a FB memory today from a friend from Kentucky that commented that we should hire Rick Pitino to replace Archie. He was 100% correct! That is the type of coach we need. You think fan comments bother Rick Pitino? No.
