Solid coach. Dude is at a football school that doesn’t GAF about basketball. Has experience. From southern Indiana. Not 100 yrs old. And his record the last 3 yrs is impressive.

Would not be upset with this hire. I can see him having real success here.

Im Not No Way GIF

He’s a good enough coach that I would fully expect him to have success in the same way that Gard has success at Wisconsin. It is a far cry better than where we are, but I think people view it as putting a ceiling on us. If the goal is a championship, I don’t think he is getting it done.
I’m not one that thinks that we are going to have known coaches at major universities racing to resign to take the IU job. However, it took him 11 years to get his team to this point and just before these seasons were a couple of years just over .500. He could be great and prove doubters wrong, as I and most everyone on here are far from an expert on the matter. I just like the fact that all McCollum has done at multiple levels is build teams to beat the brakes off the competition.

I think he is a solid hire good coach hopefully with more Nil he can take Indiana to final four he did take Clemson to a elite 8.

Try and justify Brownell as the best option without talking about how he's from Indiana, or played with Cheaney. What does he bring to the table beyond 20+ years of blah results at other schools? Why would we think he'd somehow be better here? Why has he been at Clemson for 15 years with no other interest from other programs?

If he ends up being the guy, well fine, I'll root for him to succeed. But there's nothing about Brownell that makes me at all optimistic. He's the guy you settle for when your first 6 choices turn you down. And maybe that'll be so.

Only reason there is a ceiling is because e make shity hires.

BB would be another one. We are hiring meh coaches, expecting elite results. Not happening

Want average--ok. Fine. Then hire BB.

AND NO, he wouldn't be Gard.

I don’t know. Just checked his HC record and it’s average. I get the football school but he’s only has one elite 8 and I think one sweet 16 in 15+ years. He’s 56 so he’s not young but not old compared to Woodson. I just think he would be a safe hire and that’s not going to help this university get back to being a so called blue blood. Funny thing is I have no idea who else we would go after other than Beard and maybe McCollum although he’s just been a mid major coach his whole career.

It’s not a sexy hire. Not saying it is. But the dude has had success in a major conference. It seems like a natural trajectory. Is he my top choice. No. Let’s go McCollum! But… I can see Brownell having real success here. Still hungry to prove himself. Not running from a major program. And still young enough to get it done.

3am desperation hook up.

Alford is also a decent 60 yr old coach. His ties to IU and Indiana are deeper than BBs. Brownell makes zero sense.
I'll say it again. Pierre Pierce. Alford is lucky He didn't spend several years in a jail cell for interfering with a criminal investigation by trying to contact the victim and witnesses and conspiring with University Officials and Security to prevent Iowa City Police from taking over the investigation. And then He tried to make Pierce the victim and gave Him a second chance just to repeat the behavior. We can't afford to have Father Flanigan as our Coach engaging in actions with his Players that may endanger other Students or the General Public.

Weirdly strong response to my post that was against the hiring of Brownell.

That bad news for your utilization of caps lock is that he already is performing at Greg Gard level of success. Good, but not great with enough results to know what they are.

He just hasn’t won much

Actually, Alford makes zero sense. Alford has already been given the keys to a historic, big name basketball school and never got past the Sweet 16. And he had his share of 5* and 4* players. If Alford was going to do anything stellar, he would have done it at UCLA.

I'm not arguing for Steve Alford. No reason to talk about either of them.

What about his past performance leads ypu to believe that?
Clemson has developed a knack for peaking at the right time. Not
Just the past 2 years but basically for about 7-8 years now. They thought they Zion wrapped up but then illegal cash made sure that
Didn’t happen so they had a couple weaker years in there, but overall it seems he’s figured things out. I would be thrilled to have Clemson success these past few years and he’s done it with far less talent than UNC/ Duke

He’s at Clemson. A football school. A true football school where basketball has been secondary. He has Clemson competing big time. Give him Indiana NIL resources.

Not saying it’s my favorite hire, but just saying I can see him succeeding here.

I call Brownell “Mr. Double Digit.”

You are guaranteed that probably 95% of the time, he’ll give you a season with 10 or more losses. The vast majority of his time at Clemson has been awful. He’s got a .600 winning % there. You are hiring Crean 2.0.
He may produce a season here or there but the rest of the time, you are going to be sorely disappointed. I tuned in particularly last night to watch their game and I felt like I was watching IU under Woodson. It gave me a panic attack thinking about him being the coach here.

Crean 2.0. Is that your new catch phrase.?
