Sure would be horrible to have such a winner in Sampson as the head coach of IU for the last 17-18 years. Guarantee he’d have 2-3 banners by now, but the holier than thou IU crowd + the extra holier than thou IU admin wouldn’t want a proven winner manning the basketball program. **** all of you that think that way. Meanwhile, we have 17-18 years of bullshit basketball. Thank you, you self righteous pricks

We chanted Kel-vin Samp-son after every home game. The dude got a 5 year cause to not coach college basketball. Mike Davis beat him when he was at Oklahoma.

Who knew.. ?

With that said, he’d beat IU + 30 every year he’s been at Houston.

Revisionist history aside, the dude never seemed right for IU.

What was it about Sampson that didn’t seem right? Was it his blue Oxford shirt in a sea of red sweaters? His olive skin of Native American heritage? Kelvin and not Kevin? Stealing Eric Gordon from under the nose of Lou Henson? His players not majoring in Rocketry?

I had forgotten about the “KEL-vin SAMP-son, clap, clap, clapclapclap” chants in Assembly Hall. Those were some fun times with Eric Gordon’s one year.

“MICH-ael WOOD-son, boo, boo, boobooboo” These are some sad times with Ballo’s one year.

Easy to say now. Back then, there was no appetite around her to keep Sampson. None.

He was caught cheating AGAIN and the news came out the day Wisconsin beat us at home later that night.

It was horrible.

Lou Henson was not coaching Illinois when Sampson stole Gordon, that was Bruce Weber.

IU became a rescue plan for Sampson after the dirty dealings at Oklahoma. That rescue plan include responsibility for redemption. Then.....Sampson back-slided. Keep in mind the ethics image at that time which heavily influenced how it dealt with the NCAA. They fell on the sword with enthusiasm. Total disaster all the way around

The only lesson I took from it all was: never self report?

We essentially walked right into the college bball death penalty w a repeat offender at the helm...no doubt a "total disaster"

I forget who wrote it, but I remember reading a post mortem on KS and the writer said he kept insisting on having a window installed in his office where he could see the practice court, despite the fact that that would be an NCAA violation. I'd say that's what made him not seem right for starters. Olive skin NA heritage? Give me a break.

yes and then later that week there was the secret meeting w D Rose in Chicago...

for a few weeks we here thought we'd get D Rose and EJ
I also remember walking past them at Memorial Stadium on Rose visit. I think it was against Western Michigan. Anyways Rose, and Mccallum Jr as a kid were trying on hats.

Are we even talking about this if Rock Choke Jayhawk doesn’t choke the game away in the first OT?
Damn, was watching that game and it was a good one, but got sidetracked with shrimp tacos and never went back to it after dinner.

Well, if he insisted on a window he didn’t get his wish because it wasn’t one of his NCAA violations. If true, it seems video surveillance with hidden camera would be less obvious of an infraction. Then again, cell phone technology was new back then and Sampson thought those non-landline calls wouldn’t be monitored.

Okay, his Native American “range of brownish and wheatish skin shades with neutral undertone” according to Siri. I guess they don’t say it’s red anymore, ever since “Redskins” was banned by the loser’s Cancel Culture as too insensitive.

This is OT, but something about the Trail of Tears has always made me wonder. It was a horrible thing to force them off their land to godforsaken country no one else wants because crops don’t grow well there for the rocks too hot, , the dust too thick, etc, okay, I get that. Well, the Trail of Tears is now a two-way street so why haven’t they come back to better conditions? Why do they continue to confine themselves to the awful land of Indian reservations out West? Has our government granted them special privileges for remaining there and if so, why? It doesn’t make sense in today’s more forgiving climate change of morality. Fire away! (figuratively speaking)

Edit- the Washington Wheatskins! What’s not to like about that? I can hear it on the nightly news now, after a Washington football team’s loss following a bad call, “Wheatskins get the chaff, more at 11.”

joe's i believe.

there was also a secret practice at AH where D Rose was there - - during a football game on a sat.
Sampson had talented guards coming back (Bassett, Crawford, Ellis, A Bud Mackey had no offcourt issuesTu Holloway and Ray McCallum, Jr, in the future fold). Forwards Kevin Jones and Devin Ebanks to play off bangers Pritchard, Thomas and Holman.. Definately would have been a *nice* group to throw against the baby boilers.. during their careers. I know I'm forgetting someome. Matt Roth as a situational shooter.. Brandon McGee at the end of the bench.

It was horrible.

That was back when IU fans still thought that being squeaky clean was some sort of badge of honor. Thirty years of losing changes one's ideals.

People that think Sampson was the problem or firing him was the right decision are 100% to blame for this shit show we have now.

Anyone that thinks that way can go to hell, as I’m driving to church.

No he didn't get it, but it just illustrated his blatant disregard for rules. He continued to request it, despite being repeatedly told it couldn't be done. Cameras would have been smart cheating, a window wasn't. See how that didn't "seem right"? It was also just a very different IU vibe at the time, and we haven't even mentioned how RMK railed against him, Benson, another former player saying he wouldn't want KS to coach his sons middle school team, etc... Had NOTHING to do with the color of his skin.

An interest in the history and current climate of Native American cultures is cool, but I don't think his Indian heritage was any sort of issue, and I think it's disingenous to suggest it was. IU fans want a winner, and he could be purple or plaid and would be supported if his team won and played smart and hard.

Ted Kitchell said that about his sons team.

I remember being excited about this squad. For good reason. Until the rumors about Sampson calling a committed Hummel popped up.

Didn't Eli Holman throw a bronzed bust of Crean's head at Crean or something?

Think it was a potted plant- I had hope for Holman- think he followed Ray McCallum
to Detroit and had a decent career up there. Armon Bassett made John Groce look
like a good coach at Ohio. It was too bad that whole roster went nuclear destruction for Crean. Of course the kids could’ve gone to class too….

Ted Kitchell said that about his sons team.
Couldn't remember who it was, but that sounds right. Just dumb to bring it up as potentially a racial thing. The biggest issue was we were still living in the very large shadow of our legendary coach, who hated the guy, and made that clear. That's as far as it needed to go as to why it never seemed like the "right fit".

Different offenses. Sampson was a repeat offender.
So was UNC for over a decade. And UK, and KU, and etc, etc, etc. I briefly practiced with a guard (not from IU) who literally took a bag of cash to xfer to UK. $40k back then was a big deal but nothing today. They got away with it.
My point is that I've seen far worse happen at other programs than Sampson's. The timing of the hire, the way it was executed, and many alumni wanting a former player or coach to step in created a huge resistance to him along with his NCAA baggage.

Dude had standing violations at Oklahoma. Wasn’t even on a ‘next hire’ coaching radar. His Oklahoma record was pretty pedestrian compared to what IU Basketball was looking for. Had about zero history concerning recruiting Indiana, Ohio or Illinois. The hire seemed weird from jump street.

It seemed like a desperate PR hire and Sampson running from trouble at Oklahoma.

That simple.

I thought the only thing weird about it was the mismatch between our former legendary coach's reputation for being squeaky clean and hiring a guy who had a reputation as a cheater and I think was still on probation, not to mention the former legend actively calling the guy out. Wasn't our President at the time black and made a comment about liking Sampson because he was a minority? I don't believe his ethnicity was ever an issue with the fanbase.
