Hoosiers

So serious question -- has anyone ever seen as profound a turnaround at any time, in any sport, simply as a result of a coaching change? Yes, lots of coaches can have an immediate impact, but anything of this magnitude?

None in college sports that I can think of. It is remarkable.
Cal taking over at UK? Weren't they #1 for much of that John Wall year?

Do yourself a favor and listen tho a Rewatchables podcast about one of Seagal’s movies. The stories about him on set are hilarious.
A guy who went to my HS was working as a singer at Disney World. A friend of his said he was leaving Orlando and going to LA to do backup vocals…on a Steven Seagal album!

My friend asked if he could tag along and maybe get booked on the same project. So they both moved to LA. Well, the album never happened. But the two guys met up with a couple other aspiring musicians out there. They co-wrote a song they all liked and somehow managed to sell it to somebody in the music business for about $25K.

That group ended up collaborating on many more songs and projects. One of them ended up getting a recording contract, under the stage name of Bruno Mars.

The group of guys has written/produced most of Bruno’s recordings and have also written songs for other artists — the most successful one being “F**k You” by CeeLo Green.

1. You have some really interesting friends (throwing in the billionaire here, too).

2. Are you sure you aren't Casey Kasem?

LOL…

Two billionaires, really. But I know the new billionaire a lot better than the other one. Just had lunch with him a couple weeks ago. Same humble, goofy dude I first met back in 1998. He finally traded in his trademark Honda Accord for a lower level Mercedes, though. I congratulated him for that.

The funny thing about Phil Lawrence is that his persona since he hit it big in music is all hip-hop, bling, etc. But he was always very prim and proper when he was growing up. He wore a bow tie to school every day…and not in the Nation of Islam sense. He was preppy to his core.

He was also probably the 3rd best singer among his siblings. His older sister Dee Dee could sing like Aretha Franklin, man.

I am still marveling about that total beatdown yesterday.

It was like dmb posting ramblings of stupid Twitter twats and Aloha or others absolutely DESTOYING the nonsense.

Wikipedia has Lawrence born in 1980 and 1973. Which one is correct? Attended Memorial?

How big is Memorial? I had a long-time girlfriend who graduated there in 91.

Right now, it has about 600 students. It was around 750 back then.

The “other” billionaire I know is named Bill Stone. He’s also a Memorial grad - early 70s. He founded SS&C with a $25k loan from his father…who owned a vinegar distillery here in Evansville.

He hasn’t lived here in a long time. But he’s been getting very philanthropic in the last 10 years. He’s donated about $50m to various projects around Evansville. And he still has a lot of family here.

He’s close with a cousin who is a very good friend of mine. That’s how I’ve met him. A few years ago, I played on a golf course he owns in Maryland called Anne Arundel Manor. He’s the only member - and the course is nice enough it could easily host a professional tournament.

So next week becomes everything I said about the Nebraska game, Gameday is coming. Two wins in two weeks with all that hype and boom, coach Cig will be at Florida but we will be on the map.

To me, the whole Steven Seagal angle is what makes the story so bizarre and compelling.

Who knew that Steven Seagal did (or at least tried to do) music? Who the hell would buy that?

And it shows how many super-talented musicians are out there just looking for their break. I think the modern music landscape - with Spotify, YouTube, social media, etc - makes it much more possible to be discovered by the kinds of people who can make a career happen.

Tell me more about this ninja class
Basically an American ninja warrior type gym and mini-sized versions for different age groups. For 3-5 year olds, it’s an hour of the coach trying to keep their attention and having them go on balance beams, climb and jump off obstacles, and hang from ropes.

Totally worth it. Also met a dad there who grew up in a town next from me and went to Depauw.

I think I’m in the minority with my belief that Cignetti will be at IU for longer than just a year or two.

I can certainly see why people expect he won’t last here. And I may be wrong. But he’s being paid pretty well at IU, the pressure to win is a lot less than somewhere like Florida, and he’s 65 years old.

On the flip side, he’s never made a bunch of money in his career until now. And maybe it’ll be irresistible for him to end his career with as much as he can possibly earn. I wouldn’t blame him.

For now, I’m just enjoying the unprecedented success of Hoosiers football. I never thought I’d see the day - totally unexpected.

Watch the clip on seagal in this thread. It’s spot on. He’s so wonderfully ridiculous. My ex stoker a few years back when I thought we were happy were watching this show on Netflix called Jack Whitehall travels with my father. Doc travel show. Cute show. The kid is a comedian and his very old dad is proper and they travel together. They’re in somewhere like Cambodia and walk past an empty hotel restaurant and way in the back of this empty restaurant sitting is seagal. Jack is like you don’t miss this opportunity to meet him. My ex never even heard of him so I spent fifteen minutes explaining greatness to her. Greatness in all of the perfectly horrible ways

Bolded is what concerns me. We may bump him to make it worthwhile but if Florida wants him, we cannot compete monetarily. Though winning a championship at IU guarantees one a wing in the college football hall of fame.

Oh, he is with a year of my age AND THAT AIN'T 65. :)

OK, 63. I stand corrected.

We’ll say that he’s nearing 65. Medicare, baby!

Not just fla. Fla state. Auburn hell maybe bama lol. And that money matters. Sets up a couple generations. And there’s nothing like football in the south. If you want to test yourself, have a pinnacle legacy, boom.

I do think we have a good chance of keeping him because of his age. They need to lock him up after this year, though.

Fine me.

Claudio Ranieiri - Leicester City. Probably two years. But the turnaround and the “out of nowhere nature of it” was insane. Premier League 2015/16 season

Now, they won the title and had a couple guys that went on to be legends at bigger clubs. So not the same but it’s what I’ve got.

The guy obviously wanted a career in the worst way and was willing to do anything, including Roseanne. Props to him for putting in the work when nobody else would.

Peak Tom Arnold? True Lies
Peak Scwarzenegger, peak Arnold, nearly peak Tia Carrere(Wayne’s world), a smoke show JLC at 40+ (@mcmurtry66 would even lower his lofty standards for that strip tease), Bill Paxton in an incredibly douchcanoe role, and a one eyed Charlton Heston taboot.

Near perfection for inch deep action cinema.

And it kickstarted the career of Eliza Dushku.

That Tia Carrera was a hot one. Had a very short best used by date tho

Are you in Georgia full-time, or will you get the privilege of paying to dome Paycor?
Oh, man. We could have a multiple-page thread on cities funding new or improved stadiums and arenas for professional teams. Until somebody can conclusively demonstrate that a stadium generates a positive gain for an area I am opposed to taxpayers footing the bill. I think any gain is minimal at best and then maybe only for a few bars and restaurants.

And I refuse to buy into the premise that a professional franchise is an “emotional boon” or “pride thing” for a city.

To spend over a billion dollars to “renovate” an existing facility and ask the taxpayers to bear the brunt is criminal. And this is for a facility that is used less than ten times a year unless the Bengals get into the playoffs and have the home field until the Super Bowl. And the Bengals get a new practice building and a new office complex. Mike Brown and family are multi-billionaires thanks to Hamilton County taxpayers.

The idea has been thrown out there that they should add a dome. Maybe the league would have a Super Bowl in Cincinnati. Yeah, right.

If they do something make it a multi-use facility. The present lease prevents other events. Let UC use the facility. Let the s***** team use it occasionally. The city has a long history of exceptional high school football. Friday night game-of-the-week at the stadium. When Lakewood St. Edward comes down to play Moeller put ‘em in the stadium and get 35-40,000.

But the taxpayers shouldn’t be funding this. The bulk - and I would say, all - should come from the Brown family. Let Brown threaten to move to St. Louis, San Antonio or San Diego.

Still doing the back-and-forth between here and Georgia. Six houses on the radar with one in particular being a favorite because of size, lake view, proximity to our course’s clubhouse, bar/restaurant and workout center. We have to sell here and then sell the present golf cottage there but close on the two properties there on the same day in order to avoid a $10,000 club membership transfer penalty. Trying to thread three needles at one time.

I spent a little time on this subject and mostly agree. Things might have changed but when I looked at it there was no economic benefit for a large city to subsidize stadiums. Money not spent at the game would be spent at the zoo, museum, dinner, shopping whatever.

For smaller off the map markets there was a perception benefit of being “on the map” that was helpful in attracting businesses looking to relocate etc. ny no. Atlanta no. Ok City. Maybe yes

Were I in a business group looking for a city in which to relocate, for example, the presence of a professional franchise might be about 76th on the list of important considerations.

Me too but I think they look at is being able to attract employees/talent etc.
