Indiana Men’s Soccer Tops Louisville, 2-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University men's soccer team ended its non-conference regular season schedule on a high note Tuesday night, beating rival Louisville, 2-1, at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.

With the victory, Indiana improves to 8-4-2 on the season overall and to 5-1-1 in the team's last seven contests, while the Cardinals fall to 6-6-3 on the year. The Hoosiers posted a record of 7-1-1 against non-conference opponents during the 2015 regular season.

Tanner Thompson scored the game-winning goal in the 48th minute and tallied his Big Ten leading seventh assist on the team's other score to pace Indiana in the win. Billy McConnell scored his first career goal for IU, while Grant Lillard and Femi Hollinger-Janzen each had an assist in the victory.

"We didn't have our best game today, but that was a must-win for us for our resume," Indiana head coach Todd Yeagley said following the match. "We've played a lot of good soccer this year so I know it's in the tank, but tonight we just needed a result."

The Hoosiers jumped on the Cardinals early on Tuesday night, scoring the match's first goal on a set piece. On a corner kick in the eighth minute, Thompson's ball found Lillard on the back post. The sophomore headed the ball back across the face of goal, finding McConnell on a bounce. The junior's header from four yards out at the left post beat the Louisville goalie, giving IU a 1-0 lead.

In the 41st minute, a bad bounce helped the Cardinals tie the match at 1-1. After clearing the ball out of the box, Louisville's Romilio Hernandez cracked a shot from 25 yards out on the left side. His shot appeared to be sailing wide left, but the ball deflected off Indiana's Derek Creviston, somehow finding the right corner of the net to tie the match heading in to halftime.

Coming out of the break, Indiana again struck quickly. Working in the middle of the 18-yard box, Hollinger-Janzen left it for Thompson near the mark.

Thompson went left and then cut right, striking a right-footed, curling shot that beat the Louisville goalie to the far right post. Thompson's great strike gave the Hoosiers a 2-1 lead.

The Cardinals sent player after player forward in the late stages of the match, but Webb and the Indiana defense played well, not allowing an equalizer. For the match, Webb had three saves to help preserve a 2-1 victory for the Hoosiers.

The Indiana men's soccer team will be back on the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 31 when the Hoosiers host the Michigan Wolverines at 7 p.m. at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
