The red color as a whole sends out a MAGA/ racist / Klan vibe, unfortunately

If I saw a neighbor off in the distance wearing a red hat, without being able to make out the logo, the thought would cross my mind that maybe I have a MAGA bigot for a neighbor. Sad but true. It's almost like a white hooded robe.

I saw these cool Americana caps (Aloha, thought of you on the 1812 cap):

I'd like to buy one. But where I live, I have to think about looking MAGA, which is sad.

I already wear a South Bend Cubs hat with the logo of the bear in stars and stripes, and I get looks from people. I think it started in 2020 after the George Floyd incident and protests, and it seems to me that in certain deep blue areas, patriotism is now frowned upon. I think the woke (or call them those heavily invested in the the current social justice movement if you hate the term) frown upon patriotism, and so do a lot of young people. (By the way, I'm not accusing anyone on here of being ashamed of the U.S. or frowning upon patriotism and don't think anyone does).

There are a lot of reasons to be critical of the U.S. past and present (and each party's policies and actions are to blame), and I am critical of it. But I still identify as an American.

I think I like the hat that says "Liberty" in the crescent the best, in terms of style and symbol. But two things make me pause: (1) Liberty has become the buzz word of the anti-maskers to such an extent some of the left seem to openly mock the term; and (2) the symbol was created and used by American Revolutionaries in South Carolina--so they were fighting for liberty while simultaneously supporting a system of slavery. That bothers me, although I guess it's a great reminder of the contradiction at the heart of the U.S. founding.
How do I put this eloquently? You’re not in middle school anymore. Stop giving a sh#t and buy the hat if you like it 😁.

If someone has an issue with it, pull down your pants and tell them to kiss your a#%. Make sure they pull down their mask beforehand.

I think most iu hats are a little darker in shade...or at least mine is so I don't mind wearing it.

OSU fans may have more of an issue

Trump has dominated your life to the point where you won’t even wear the color red.

You suffer from late stage TDS.

About the same as all the posters here with early stage bds.

Most even have hds as well who wasn't even president.

There is a tendency among some members of the Republican tribe - and this predates MAGA by quite a bit - to characterize Democrats as inherently unamerican. This politicization of patriotism only lands if that characterization speaks to you.

Not gonna lie though, when the red hats got popular I was a little leery of my red IU hats. But I got over it pretty quickly.
I don't really care what other people think. I know what kind of person I am so if others want to draw a different conclusion based on my hat then so be it. Of course, there are limits where I think a hat could show what kind of person you are. I think a lot of people go around looking for things to be offended about.

You wear anything slightly patriotic right now, you take the chance of provoking many democrats.

Unfortunately it was precisely b/c of what others might construe, both left and right, that gave me 4 seconds of pause.

I thought the red MAGA hats were both brilliant and so so dumb at the same time.

Democrats as a whole unpatriotic? No, too big a brush. Are there some voices on the left that are pretty loud that are anti-America adjacent? Yeah, absolutely.

There are different types when it comes to supporting or liking something. We can use IU sports for instance. There are IU fans who want the team to do well but I'll be damned if they don't act like their support makes them miserable. "Our administration makes it so we will never be good at football, we're a joke, we never get our hires right. Davis sucked, Samspon was a cheater, Clappy was awful, Miller was garbage, we are ranked #15 in year 2 of Woodson despite battling injuries to key players so it is clear Woody ain't the guy..." You get the point. On the other is "IU is awesome, they are the greatest and I will support the school no matter what." Both are fans but the approach to their Fandom makes you question why that is the case for one of them.

There is a happy median there. Sometimes you need the negative introspection and sometimes you need to bust out the pom-poms. However, if you tend to fall into one of the two categories more often, the almost always negative outlook is going to have the happy median and rah-rah people questioning your fan-hood.

That, in my opinion, is what hurts the left on the whole patriotism thing. The people with the biggest megaphone who advocate for the left are the "I love my country but...." types. If you do that as your default, people stop listening to what comes before the but, because what comes after is what you find most important. "I love IU basketball, but it has been a crappy ass product since Bob Knight left and nobody seems to know how or what to do to fix it and I don't even know why I bother." By the time you get to the end of that, you have buried the lede.

It isn't conplicated. Certain looks have been appropriated by the MAGA crowd, like red hats and hooded white robes, as examples. They seem to be trying to tie flag imagery to their bigoted world view as well. We've all seen the ridiculous flag-draped pickup trucks. I fight that, though. I will fly my flag in my yard.

dumb

Can you make a post that isn't highly partisan?

There are people in both parties that aren't very patriotic. However, at least we aren't rocking the confederate flags and the white hoods.

Cut the confederates from your party and we can talk about patriotism. Until then, stop throwing rocks from your glass house.

Ridiculous.
You might be missing some context.

If I still lived in Indiana or even just in the Midwest, I could wear my IU hat every single day without a second thought. People know the IU logo and IU colors. I would not be mistaken for a MAGA bigot. I could also wear my Cincinnati Reds hat every single day without a second thought. People know the Reds logo and colors. I would not be mistaken for a MAGAt.

I live in Florida. No locals teams would have predominantly red in a hat or other apparel. Not the Dolphins, Bucs, Jaguars, Heat, Marlins, Panthers, Rays, Gators, UCF Knights, Seminoles (though they have deep scarlet), etc.

Chances are, anyone you see wearing a red hat down here, it's a MAGA hat, and the impression is that a person wearing a red hat might be in the cult / Klan of MAGA.

That's an impression that I would like to avoid sending. It is unfortunate that such appropriation has happened, but it is reality.

Your point is not surprising. Words like racist, klan etc. associated with red caps is a liberal and media construct which leftists and Democrats eagerly adhere to. Why? Because name calling and ad hominems is what the left does.

The truth is the MAGA means making America great. It means America(ns) first. What’s wrong with that? The left has taken the “again” part and believe it means make America racist.

I really don’t care if you never wear red. That‘s type of conformity what you guys do. Now go buy yourself a “Hate does not live here” sign.
