The whistle clearly was blown before the ball was picked up. I would like to know if that has any bearing on the call.

It would have bearing on calling it correctly. Every other time on a fumble replay, there has to be a clear recovery. There couldn't be a clear recovery because the whistle blew before that occurred. Whether the ball went backward or not makes no difference, it was an unreviewable play.
