BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University men's soccer player Andrew Gutman capped the summer before his freshman season in style as the Chicago Fire Academy U-17/18 team won the 2014-15 U.S. Soccer Development Academy national championship with a 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake-Arizona Saturday at U.S. Soccer's National Training Center in Carson, California.

This year's squad posted a final record of 19-4-10 and won the championship after entering the USSDA playoffs seeded 15th in the 32-team tournament.

Gutman scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal right before the halftime whistle gave the Fire a 2-0 lead at the break. The Hinsdale, Illinois native nearly made it 3-0 right after the break but is 1v1 with RSL goalkeeper Luis Barraza was saved.

Gutman did have a hand in the third goal as well as his left-footed cross into the box forced a Real Salt Lake defender to make a sliding attempt on a clearance. The ball instead looped over the head of his goalkeeper for an own goal and a 3-1 Chicago Fire victory.

Gutman and the Hoosiers are just over five weeks away from the start of the 2015 season. Indiana opens the regular season on August 28 at 8 p.m. ET against St. John's as part of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
