Got a chance to see Schifino play (other than highlights where everyone looks good) and was impressed.

The one thing that stood out was how well he handled the ball being 6'5'. He had no problems bringing the ball up against pressure. Seems to be a decent shooter and can really drive and score or dish. Add, 6'5' CJ Gunn at off guard and you have a very tall back court. Gunn has a very good shot outside and can slash to the bucket. A scorer which is what IU has been missing the last couple years. Hopefully their games translate to college. Let's hope we get lucky and add Schifino's teammate, Reneau who at 6'8 was also very impressive.

I saw much of the game on ESPNU today - JHS is built Big 10 ready. He did handle the ball well and seems to have good court vision. Offensively, we loves to drive the lane - has no fear. I think he’ll be hard to keep off the court; he might spell X, but if we have Wings who can shoot, the thought of those two together on the floor is intriguing. Would love Reneau, but with Geronimo waiting on Race who is waiting on TJD, I’m afraid he would rather see a more assured path to playing - just guessing.

Like both a bunch..
But no way can we expect two freshmen. To lead us to a top 5 finish in the conference..
They're not OAD types..
Maybe as sophomores they can make some noise..jmo
Delusional to think so unless they are fab five type talent.

Just said the same in another thread. X and JHS on the court together…been a long time since we’ve had that much physicality in the backcourt.

that's my preferred style of play too, but I just don't think there's enough shooting there from the backcourt to do that for long spells, unless we do really well in the portal or Gunn is a huge surprise (don't expect much PT out of freshmen).

Seems like within the last week or two that CJ Gunn has been elevated to top 50 status. Can he be a good player as an upper classmen? Most definately. Pump the breaks a little and let him develope naturally and on his own time. Or atleast I can atleast vbg.
Are you surprised it is all very predictable but I was thinking top 25 five star status it seems like from what I have read. But remember this happens every single spring ever recruit we ever sign is going to be the nex Eric Gordon in year one until we actually see them play. Remember the incredible hype on the movement class. People never learn their lesson it was the sam with Kopp and Stewart remember the hype on them a year ago!

Easily our best freshman backcourt since Bracey Wright and Marshall Strickland. Hang the banners already!
Exactly I am shocked Gunn has not been moved up to a five star the the recruiting services. Not only will he start he will play 30 plus minutes a game and shoot over 40% from three. In fact in the last week Gunn has grown to 6'7 and Hood is now 6'8 and still growing.

what about the brakes, pump them too?

JK, I make those little errors all the time, but I gotta chide someone else when I catch it!

I'm not expecting much of anything out of CJ, because he's a freshman. But, with the shooting of this crew, if he can knock it down and play some D, I'd guess the minutes would be there for the taking. Same goes for Leal, but I still think he's over his head a bit at this level athletically.

I prefer to use Lyndon Jones and Jay Edwards as the comparative point

What why not I thoght he was a five star now??? I think Peter Jurkin and Ron Patterson were five stars also the spring before they set foot on campus. Same with Jerimiah April but maybe he was only a high four star.

Yeah, our fans and this board specifically are guilty of pumping up every recruit. I don't know about Gunn, as I'm not a recruitnik, and he seems to have a lot of tools, but I'm not sure he'll be the shooter many are touting, at least early. Taking a step back and having to deal with college defenders, makes most guys, except for the elite shooters, struggle early and have to develop their shot and their confidence.

Lol. Last year it was Tamar Bates, this year JHS & Gunn. The good ol off-season where IU is battling for the B1G championship and top 25 status.

Forgot about Bates he was going to be an instant impact day one starter and I think a one and done one poster said? The spring never ever disappoints on this board. But while we are at it forget Big Ten titles why not national title!

Well, it’s partly because they compare them to who is leaving and those players are discounted at hyperbolic levels, I suppose to make the fans feel better about things.

the names change but the posts don’t. Everything will be great once so and so leaves (because they can’t shoot), and the superstar arrives.

It’s about how the recruits fit into the team now and going forward. Team building….program building. It’s usually the ones who never saw what the program looked like. They think someone should play based on a number.
They think they can evaluate Woodson based on one year’s results.
Not that you would be guilty of any of those comments.
People tend to blame the old guard…when it actuality it’s the younger group that doesn’t understand.

The amazing thing is the players never live up to the hype the first year yet the posts cotinue. It is as if people forget or totally ignore what they have said in the past. Like the stuff with Bates being the next coming of Michael Jordan. People should go back and read what they posted a year ago but they won't.

Just to be clear … I am not comparing Gunn and JHS to Edwards/Jones … my point is I prefer not to use the Fab Five as benchmarks on here.

agreed, I like X's progress with his 3 pt shooting (by far our most reliable late in the season) but those two can't be options 1 and 2 next year from behind the arch.

Nor do I but I think Peter Jurkin had grown to 7'5 and was the next Patrick Ewing before he ever set foot on campus. i will say these spring posts on incoming recruits each spring are very very good entertainment. I would not be shocked if Gunn is 6'8 and has a 42 inch vertical by September as the legend grows by the day.

Next year’s recruits are always the saviors. Have been for 25 years straight without fail. Be patient everyone!

I understand that freshman are rarely effective, but I will come out and say that I predict Jalen Hood-Schifino will be very good next year. He won’t start, but he will finish ten plus games and be a reason why we win.

Come on dude, the experts  have spoken.
Positive thoughts will not be tolerated!

I expect JHS to play and be a bigger impact than Bates was. He's very solidly built and B10 ready, body wise. And his shooting form is not bad at all. Here are some highlights.

Yeah, X was a very pleasant surprise with his shooting, especially with how his shot looks... but it went in and that's what counts!

I've actually been saying it won't surprise me if his shooting percentage drops a bit this year because if we don't add a better quality shooter or 2, I suspect he's going to garner more of the perimeter attention that apparently Stewart and Kopp did this year (since they never seemed to get up the # of shots I thought they should).

Been out fishing yet?

woke up to an 1" of snow this morning....April sun melted it by 11am...but now they are talking 2-3" more tomorrow morning. So no fishing yet....still waiting for spring up here. It feels even colder than it is because I was in Vegas all last week where it was bright sun, no wind and 85F every day. I hate mother nature right now.
