Grade the season ?

Thought's on Coach Woodson first season.
Possibly your expectations for next year..And the future..

I give it a B-

Tough 5 game slide turned what looked like a very promising season into one with uncertainty, but loved the resiliency shown in the BTT.

Given the roster, NCAAT birth was always the goal and anything else was house money. Disappointing result tonight but I like where the program is headed.

I am hopeful. The team did more than under Archie Miller. At best this team was imperfect. No outside shooting. They hit the ceiling tonight. This will not be the ceiling going forward.

B-
I fully expected to make the ncaa so he met that expectation. Lost too many games we should have won though. Future no idea but next year could be rough unless he gets some shooters this spring. We cant expect to get outscored by 20 in threes and win without a guy like tjd on the roster.

I'm going C+ for just these last couple weeks..
But I'm really intested on what's to unfold with who stay's and goes..
We have to do better in the portal than guy's like Durr...

I expected to make the tournament as a solid 7 or so seed.

While we had the rough patch, I was pleased that the team didn’t give up, and battled back late in the season.

I thought coach did a pretty good job of instilling a new culture in the program, but it is to be determined how that will develop over the years (ie who comes back, and how we build things going forward).

Limited with shooters. Continued to over utilize guys for too long. Learning on the job (IU likes that strategy in both basketball and football). Next year, 2 key departures, a reliance on true freshman. I’ll go with 17-18 wins and an NIT. Probably finish about where we normally do, which is the 8-12 spot in the conference.
Our outside shoot was our Achilles Heel and cannot blame that on Woody. Just don’t have anybody with any consistency and some of the worst shooting forms I’ve ever seen.

Woody is a great guy and simply a stop gap. He’s trying to stabilize the program for 2-3 years and then he’s going to retire. Bank it. We knew this going in. Be interesting if Fife is the heir apparent.

How many players:

Exceeded expectations? 0
Met expectations? 3
Below expectations? Everyone else
Didn't sniff expectations? 3

B. For the season I think the team accomplished what they were capable of. Could have won a few more of the close games maybe if we'd had some better luck, but luck isn't a strategy.

Coach Woodson took a team with limited talent and a lot of one-dimensional players and got them to play defense and not give up. That may not have shown tonight but you don't judge a season by one game.

We beat Purdue, won two BTT games, and made the tournament with a new head coach. I had hoped maybe we had lit a fire in the last week, but whatever fuel we were burning ran out tonight.

Upwards and onwards. Expectations will be higher next year but all in all this season went a little better than I thought it might.

B. Easy to grade down after this loss. But considering injuries, lack of shooting talent, and new system/coaches, I'll give a B.

TJD should come back after getting bitch slapped by SM. But he won't. So for next year. I just hope a top half BT and another NCAA bid.

B+ overall.

Woodson talked almost everyone into returning after most at least considered transferring. Woodson has recruited at a much higher level out the gate than I anticipated considering the state of our program over the last 10 years (2 top 25 recruits in less than a recruiting cycle!). Our defense was absolutely twice as good as I anticipated coming into the year. Beat Purdue! Won 2 BTT games. Got in the NCAA tournament in year one.

Hate this last loss but impressed overall with year one and the direction of the program.

A-. He talked TJD into coming back for a big season. He still has lots of room to grow but I was so glad Woody talked him into giving us fan another season to enjoy TJD.

Woody also gave the team a chance with the defense and offense he coaches. I also like his attitude and the way he blames himself for losses and gives the players credit for wins. I hated all the close losses but I think this was a learning year for Coach as well as the players.

I think he has some good recruits coming in the pipeline too.

They beat Purdue. That win was worth about 10 other wins. They also gave the fans a fun BT Tournament. Overall, I just like the team mindset under Woody.

The roster wasn't as tall or athletic as some but I love that they found a way to the big dance! That needs to be an every year thing again!!!

Fife didn't jump assistant jobs for any other reason.

The 2020 cancelled tournament killed Archie. And then 2021 was a weird season playing in empty gyms.

IU probably should have given him another year, and used that season to develop a list of potential coaches in case things didn’t improve.
I agree on 2020. No excuse for 2021 tho. Games were played, he just didn’t get it done.

What makes you think dolson would of had a list. Is was Steven's then Woodson. Why would he have changed that in a year?

C+, mainly because my expectations skyrocketed when TJD came back.

It's very rare to have an upperclassmen all American talent.

XJ was considered the best point guard in the portal.

Kopp and Stewart were experienced key players...but they never really gelled and that killed this team.

I didn't believe the conference was that good (and I think that will play out in the tourney). I thought this year was a transition year for the conference after losing so much from last year so...I had higher expectations coming into this season that ended up as....meh.

I think we're really going to miss TJD next year (and Race).

Gonna need Geronimo, Bates, Galloway and Lander to take a major leap next year. They have the high school reputation to be good to great college players but, they need to realize their potential immediately.

I'm not confident that will happen.

I somewhat agree. The 2020 team would have been about a 10 seed in the tourney. Maybe they would have won a game or two and given the program momentum.

I don't think Archie was the right person for the job....underestimated how poor a fit it was from a personality perspective.

However, anyone that thinks this year was some big improvement over Archie's last 3 seasons is lying to themselves. We are nowhere near a consistently relevant program right now.

I’d say solid B+ For the season. Had we won one more tourney game, or played it very close and picked up another win or two that we blew during the year, might have been A-. Proud of the players and coaches for sticking with it and finishing on a high note overall.

You knew that Woody is only going to be be here for 2-3 years? And you knew that we knew that too?

I am embarrassed to say that I didn't know any of this.
