was Galloway out there much with Reneau and Ballo together much? I like Galloway off the bench, Carlyle will be fine
Clearly? He had a nice stretch late. He was awful before that stretch. No way he should be a starter right now.
This team lags an identity. It looks like the gaurds (Rice amd Carlyle) locking down defensively and pushing pace might be the plan. Galloway coming off the bench and able to play multiple spots might be another piece.
Tucker needs minutes as well. There are a lot of pieces that need to come together. The good news is there are a lot of pieces, and this team has options.
Pushing pace, iso for Ballo, kickouts off drives to Mgbako. Definitely a simple plan, but the guard play was overall better tonight than early last year.
Rice didn't have a great night but I think he will be fine.
We have two separate styles that can be successful. Let's start Reneau, Mgbako, Rice, Carlyle and Tucker. We can defend the perimeter well and run. Then bring in Galloway and Ballo for Reneau and one of the guards and run a steady diet of pick and roll with Ballo. You could play those 7 players with a sprinkling of Goode for Mgbako, keep the bigs separated and manipulate the pace of the game, utilize each player to their strengths and not get fired if you're Woody.
Noted elsewhere that Carlyle”s defensive footwork and body positioning was poor. Leaning and reaching will be called in league play

I did. He may be our best defender but he has to get square with his feet up under. He can’t reach and lean the way he is currently. Or he will get called.
Watch Cupps. He is half the athlete but his positioning is better.

I think one of the brightest spots of the game was Kanaans defense. Cupps should never see the floor and gets cooked constantly.
right on Kanaan, wrong on Cupps. Solid for what he is: backup, pass-first PG. We can milk a lot of PG minutes out of Rice, Carlyle and Galloway, so a true backup PG is less of a concern, but I think after Rice, Cupps is the next "true PG". If you want an interesting bet, it won't surprise me if he leads the team in 3 pt %.

I'm sure Carlyle got beat a time or two last night. Their guards were actually pretty decent, and when you're pressuring like that, its basically impossible to not get beat every now and then. But it was rare if it happened.
Rice got caught reaching, and leaning, a number of times.
Cupps is a very good on the ball defender as well. But gets caught up in movement way too much. Defending ball and player movement isn't an easy thing to do though...which is why I harp on our offense not doing it, as much as I do.

I'd probably not bet it, but it won't surprise me if it happens. Mbako's going to take way more 3s and will be the focus of defenses and Cupps is going to get a lot of open looks. Don't we already have a bet for this year of minutes for Cupps vs Newton?
Let's calm down and remember it's only 1 game. Galloway's recovering from an injury and hasn't had a lot of court time so he won't start for these first few games and Carlyle will get his chance to show he should start, but Galloway's going to get plenty of minutes too as he gets his legs back. From the highlights I watched, Carlyle has a lot more offensive game that he hasn't shown yet. I think 6th man might be the perfect spot for TG, so give Carlyle a chance.
You missed my point. I never said Cupps was better. He simply has better defensive footwork. And you REALLY aren’t going to like this but Scoop had the same issue

Cupps runs down the court, passes, and then goes to the corner and waits. Rinse wash and repeat. Seems like a great kid but right now he is not adding anything to the team.

My bad. Still getting used to this roster and that was my first game to watch. It was Rice.
I didn't see the Marian game but was thrilled Newton finally took the court. How did he move? His problem is just a log jam in minutes, which coupled with coming back from injury, is why I took the bet. Cupps is going to play some minutes every game he's healthy I'd bet, so his 5-10 every game I think will outweigh the minutes Newton gets just because he's got 4-5 guys playing in front of him, even though he may make more head-turning plays. I picked the tortoise over the hare!
Oh ya you are for sure favored here. Newton looks bad. Hope it’s rust but not as athletic as I hoped.
When we're running sets that involve more movement, Cupps is pretty good at facilitating that. The problem is, 2/3 of our sets basically have ALL our players doing what you said. And at that point, no, Cupps isn't overly valuable.
And then defensively, he does very good things defending on the ball. He's pesky, he's disruptive, he gets players sped up., AND he's deceptively athletic and able to help rebounding wise. When he's guarding active guards that move a lot without the ball, that's when he gets in the most trouble. But again, I attribute a lot of that to our entire team not being great at defending off the ball player movement. Our help, and then rotation, defense is basically awful.
In short, Cupps is a solid overall basketball player, but needs good movement on offense, and better team defenses, to really add a lot of value.
For this team, he'll be a solid backup for Rice, when we're in foul trouble in other areas and/or have injury issues. Otherwise, I see Trey assuming more of the backup PG roles.
I would put Cupps pretty high on the potential transfer list at the end of the year. His dad obviously knows the game better than any of us do, so if my analysis is any way right, they'll find a program somewhere else where Gabe can get a better combo of NIL AND being a better fit basketball wise. And if/when that happens, he'll look A LOT better, overall, and we'll have people on here pissed that he didn't "look like that" at IU.
In short IU is not a school that is gonna develop kids while woody is here. Guys like Cupps will not do well here. Come in pretty much ready with lots of talent or develop elsewhere and come in for your last year or 2.
If Cupps does transfer after this season, he will have to go to a mid-major to get the kind of opportunity you speak of. I think he will actually play more minutes this season than many seem to think because of all the things you mention. By the way, I heard on a podcast that CMW said he will emphasize defensive important early in this season and then eventually open up offensively. Cupps' understanding of what CMW wants will help him get on the floor more, I think.
TJD, Schifino, Reneau, and Mgbako all have significantly developed under CMW. Cupps is not an underclassman/major minutes kind of talent. He is more like a blossoming mid-to-late junior season kind of talent.
Yep, you named dudes with tons of talent when they got here. All borderline 5 stars. Cupps is a borderline 150 player at best.
I'm not sure that's exactly the case with Gabe.
I think Woodson needs guys that can make plays for themselves...guys that would shine in an "Open Gym" type environment. I know Woodson is doing more than just "rolling the ball out"...he's not THAT level of bad. I just think there are very long stretches in games where there really isn't a lot of movement. And at that point, when a ball gets kicked to someone, its on them to make an individual play. Obviously that's not Gabe's strength.
But I do think Woodson improves players. Mack, as an example, I think has improved a TON since he arrived at IU.
I think you might be right with the types of players that are likely to develop under Woody...should have read down a post or two.
I don't think he'll have to drop to mid major level. Just to a program that promotes and values more movement on offense, and has a better defensive system in place where there's better help and rotation.
Purdue maybe? Iowa maybe? Northwestern maybe? If coaches like Schertz or McMillan end up at a P4 program next year? I'm sure there are a lot of examples of high major schools where Cupps would better fit, and would be much more impactful than he will be playing for Woodson.
