Gaetz withdraws from AG consideration

If the Senate rubber stamps approval of every bad nominee, and Gratz is a very bad nominee, then we will have become a third world banana republic.
That's a bit hyperbolic, don't you think?

There are a number of checks still in place on a President besides the consent of the Senate to his cabinet picks. Why do intelligent people forget our system of government so easily?

Of course, if the Senate agrees, then isn't that democracy at work? That each of those Senators fears they'll lose reelection if they don't vote that way?

I know we've had our differences on approach but serious question. Does giving total power to Trump give you guys any pause? Or are you all trusting on Trump?
You keep saying that, but I really question if there is anything you guys would push back on. You seem to love a strongman.

Number one, what would "us guys pushing back" even look like, much less expect to accomplish?

As far as the amount of power wielded by Trump that it would take to give "us guys" pause, I can only speak for me, but it would be the exact amount that would give me pause with ANY politician...no more than just enough to do the job, the lesser the better, and even then I do it grudgingly. That said, another 4 year Dem/Never Trumper conniption fit of obstruction isn't going to do the nation any favors either.

Of course it is. However, rubber stamping approval of everything a President wants is what happens in banana republics. It is obviously what Trump wants and apparently expects.

Push back on what? Liberals crying about everything. My advice is put your big boy pants on and get it over it. You guys lost. If Gaetz gets enough votes, he will be the AG. That's how the system works.
I'm independent. So no you guys comments. I've voted Republican many times.

I'm actually looking forward to this. Financially I'm set for life so no need for big boy pants.

I don't think some of you know what's coming but your about to find out. I've got the popcorn ready.

Gaetz issues would keep him out of getting a job in the Indiana athletic department! And he is being considered for attorney general! Should I laugh or cry?

It would have to be gradual, over a longer timeline than one term. Very similar to the way Congress has ceded power to the Executive branch.

Is there another way to read this other than "I'm going to enjoy watching you suffer because you disagree with me about how the country should be run?"
I truly hope it goes better than I expect, but if you think the Trumps and Musks of the world are really pro-union or the little guy, I think you are mistaken. Truth be told they'd like to see all those guys making $25 per hour and no pension. When that happens, you better already be part of the investor class.

Already saw a story of both dairy and vegetable farmers worried about enough labor with deportations. What did they think they were voting for?

I see many on the right wanting to crack down on illegals on day 1. How come I seldom see the same zest to crack down on the companies and farms that use them?

So voting for fear of losing reelection is what you see as government working properly? Maybe I'm not reading that lest sentence in the right context.

You keep repeating this, but it doesn't make it true. Lower taxes and fewer regulations are good for economies. The economy is going to do fine and I get a pro Bitcoin administration. I'm extremely happy.

I understand all of that and think you are right to worry about it.

I just don't get the other sentiment that I asked you about. People disagree about things. None of us know for sure what is going to happen.

Tariffs, unfunded tax cuts, increased debt, deportations, etc. can all be inflationary. Already being reflected in borrowing costs. Don't expect mortgage rates to fall anytime soon.

I think it may come down to a few things. 1) Do I think Trump will use this "total power" the way that you all think he will. Hell no I don't. He is now a 2nd term pres and he didn't do any of what you all fearmonger the first time around. Is there going to be a period of time (that is NOT OVER just yet) that some of us rub your noses in the wet carpet for all of the piddle puddles that you all have been having for 4-8 years. You GD right we are. There were multi assassination attempts by cough someone cough on a political opponent. And it wasn't the conservatives that tried to smear their own.
2) The Swamp (NOT THE DEM's alone) have been running a Chinese slow coup for 40-50-60 years? Take a piece of more power every time you have the opportunity to implant cradle to grave vote buying tactics.
We've got 2 years (worst case) to curb stomp the last 40-50-60 years of an attempted over throw of what our country principles are all about.

R's my hold all 3 branches, but there is enough Rhinos that will act as a check and balance, just like Joe Manchin did over the last major power grab that the DNC tried to pull off. "It's gonna beeee, allll riiiight, alll right". I 100% feel and have 70+ million other American's that agree, Trump isn't doing this for his own power needs. He is doing this to save our people and businesses, not necessarily in that order.

Thanks for the well thought out and polite response. I can respect everything you said.

Only small complaint would be the RINO term. Disagreeing with Trump does not make you a RINO.

I feel that what "you all" call a strong man, is what "we" call someone that is transparent. Unlike, using the transitive property, you all love a weakman, who lies while looking you directly in the eye, while sticking a knife in your back so they can gain their own power.
Yes, I feel that todays Democrats will look you in the eye, while eating your left overs and sleeping with your wife.

For many, any Republican who is not totally loyal to Trump is a RINO.

Deportations wouldn't be inflationary. The rest of them depend on the amount and how quickly they hit. It will end up a drop in the bucket compared to Covid spending though. They'll cause some inflation, but nothing crazy like 22-23. Also, cutting regulation and tax cuts increases growth. I think inflation will be higher than the 2% target, but reasonably controlled. If the economy grows 4-5%, real wages should increase, which is what people care about the most. As for debt. Neither party cares and markets know their going to monetize it.

Are you really expecting 4-5% GDP growth? We haven't had anything over 4% since the late 90s other than the one off Covid rebound in 2021.... Which accompanied all the inflation.

Anecdotally, I'm suddenly deluged with 2025 project requests from customers that have been on hold, some since '23.

I passed on 2 RFPs brought to us by 2 different vendors last week because we couldn't respond by the deadline.

We'll see what comes of all the activity, but suddenly, everyone is interested in spending money in '25.

What type of industry if you mind me asking. My buddy sells metal buildings to mainly farmers and small businesses. He said spending is up.

Expecting 5%? No. Do I expect 4% over a 12 month period, yeah. I think they’re going to cut taxes, regulations, and government waste and we’re going to get really good growth.

I understand what you're saying and agree - in theory. Your example of Christianity is one of religion, not government. I choose to accept Christianity and its tenants - I didn't choose the Constitution, although I am damn glad I was born in the USA.

I'm a Constitutionalist if that's how government works. But that's not how it's been working. One side can't be expected to play by one set of rules not applied to the other.
@BradStevens let's say you believe in the NCAA rules for football. You coach your players to adhere to the rules.

You're playing OSU in football and you find that OSU's offensive line is holding and not being called for it. Do you continue to insist your offensive line strictly follow the rules, even though you know the refs are allowing a lot of holding?

And if you tell your team duing the game that they can grab and hold a little because it's being allowed, are you still an adherent of the college rules, even though you're not going to change the way you coach during practices?

I don't think Garland was picked based on identity. He was picked for the following reasons:

95% - He got ****ed over for the SC Seat
5% - He was also qualified.
So is a Supreme Court qualified (supposedly) candidate automatically a good selection for AG?

You dont think he has incentive to get back at the Party that blocked his SC nomination?

The difference in my mind is this:

You follow the rules in football only so far as it helps you win the game.

In government, though, following the rules is it's own reward, it has it's own value, because it helps maintain and create a stabler society, less corruption, etc. That's what a Constitutionalist believes, I think. They believe "law" is not just poltiics all the way down, that it is something different and I think it is what I just laid out--a deeper pragmatic view and valuation of a particular society's history and underpinnings of legitimacy (if you lose the latter by not paying enough attention to the former, you create a high risk of revolution and civil unrest).

And as it applies to morality, there is no "winning" or "losing" in comparison to others. Plus, you become what you do; if you do immoral things, even if justified by what you consider a moral end, you make yourself into a type of person that I made my mind up, long ago, I did not want to be.
