Reading comments about the changes here, which are so-far-so-good for me.

Wanted to talk about the "Free Boards" since Jim made it a thing with his post.

I value the free boards because:
  • Easy to be a casual participant
  • Allows other team's fans to come over and talk trash - Whole thing used to be called Rivals (DWS!) We seem to have lost that part.
  • Smart fans here who provide good intel
  • Members take ownership, check out Baseball - ptrich should get paid!
  • Good stories on IU, which are available in other places too if you look hard enough
  • Great stories by fans on their time at IU - Priceless!
What say you?

Go Hoosiers!

I enjoy the free board and get great enjoyment chatting with fellow degenerates. Cavanagh's corner gave out the best inside info message boards have ever seen.

Jim's position was bizarre. I guess he imagined if he canceled the free boards, all the free board people would sign up and pay him. That wasn't very realistic.

I have a love hate relationship with this place. Part of me would be happy to avoid all the bullshit posts from the hidden agenda donkeys, but I would also miss the occasional inside info and occasionally hilarious posts.

It's like agreeing get papercut a million times in return for $500,000. I keep going along, even though it's awful here somedays.

Where do you live? I think these boards add a vital link to IU and Indiana for we out of state Hoosiers. It's so great when you get to talk a little Hoosier/IN ball with someone.

Looks like the IU team is heading to Europe this summer. Any plans to secretly videotape their scrimmages again?
Shit it was no secret. Someone actually told me to stop, I said make me. Got credentials as media because of it. If I couldn’t make 10 times more in my day job being a media guy would be fun.

We are keeping the free boards. We may re-name them or something and maybe add one or two for other sports, but they are a valuable piece to this. However, if there is information that we got explicitly because we are at Rivals and it is not public knowledge or use resources that we have to pay a fee for, then those will be on the premium boards for the most part.
They will not be ignored.

Also forgive me, but Jim as in Jim Coyle and what do you mean made it a "thing". A good thing or bad thing?

I appreciate the post.

I think what rubbed some wrong here was previous ownership said that to contribute you had to be a paid subscriber. That, the only way to contribute was to pay a monthly fee.

I did not like that comment by them, and told Jim so. There are people here that contribute by what they post. Enough so that it drives people to come here, it drives debates, it drives post counts. I understand this is also a business, but I do not see how a robust free forum could do anything other than to somehow contribute to the bottom line.

I’ve been a member here for decades, and I recall older iterations of this forum. I also remember a great number of really, really good posters that have since moved on. It’s really not that complicated:

1. Show an appreciation for people that are just here on these forums.
2. Encourage and foster lively debate.
3. Have some admins around-not to silence one side of an argument , but to keep things focused on BB, and deal with the occasional trouble maker.

FWIW, I appreciate your (@SammyJacobs ) efforts at #s 1-2.

Thank you for sharing that. This is our first time running messages boards so bear with us as we learn how things work around here. Your points are correct on having a robust free forum/boards. My hope is that we can provide both that and enough expertise to have people pay for our premium content in the future.

I told Jim that I appreciated his work very much. But he has to realize that some of us don't have money for this. It's why we go to the free boards. In another thread I commented how ihsaatv.org used to let you watch the state finals for free before COVID. So I would watch all eight games. Now,you have to pay and I am unwilling to pay for it.

Hi Sammy: Thx for the question. Reference to the former publisher and a revenue related post on the free side about becoming a member and supporting the site. It was an honest post but singled out free boards, which didn't land well everywhere. Maybe someone can find and share. I'm not that good at navigation. That's the reference. Thx and go Hoosiers!

If you’re an IU fan and want the Wild West unmoderated message board experience where basically anything goes, the Rivals free boards are for you.

This is the one. Oof, that wasn't a well thought out or well rec'vd message. I also see a few people in the thread who are no longer premium subscribers, but were at the time.

Jim didn't have any appetite for dealing with non-subscribers. He essentially viewed them as freeloaders. And he was about as diplomatic as a jackhammer.

If they see the value, "freeloaders" will convert, and preemies will stay. If the value isn't there, they won't.

Only problem was he couldn't keep guys like me from becoming freeloaders. The premie was lord of the flies when I decided I could have the same experience without the $120/yr

You won’t have to “learn” how the free board works. It’s basically a free-for-all where anything goes. Posters wander in and out. It’s full of unsubstantiated rumors. People forget where they are at and start talking politics out of the blue. It’s like the Jerry Springer Show of open forums. And, it’s highly entertaining.
