Dustin Dopirak on potential IUBB coaching candidate pool shrinking

Is coaching at a collegiate level (yes 14 of those seasons was a head coach in D2) considered “unproven?”

Apart from the bigger spotlight, bigger NIL budgets and having a larger support staff to assist, at the end of the day, basketball coaching on the court is pretty much the same between the divisions. It’s coaching. BM wouldn’t be bringing in D2 players. He might have a select few transfers from Drake that he feels can compete at this level but he moved up from Southwest Missouri State to Drake and didn’t see a falloff. Who says he cannot move from Drake to the P4 and translate as well. He’s going to have a roster of better Jimmy and Joes and his culture and coaching still can transition. It’s not rocket science. Coaching is coaching.
It's not happening he is going to Iowa from Iowa.

Did you read the article?

What they were last year is irrelevant since this is an entirely new team.
He brought players with him so he is 30-3 with basically a team full of D2 players.

Other coaches seek him out for his knowledge.

Shaka Smart who several on here championed for the IU job said if he was an AD, he would hire him tomorrow.

If he came here and was 30-3, I don't care what kind of offense he runs!
Why do you?
Nobody wants to see this offense as Jim and Rick talk.

I heard the same kind of thing about coach Knight 50 years ago. A lot of people on this board are too young to remember that.
I still can’t help but wonder how much these “slow” offensive schemes have to do with the players these other schools can get. Does McCollum at Drake have super quick, potential NBA guards running the offense? Maybe some of these other coaches simply don’t have the horses to run a fast, high powered offense. Whoever comes to Indiana is going to get McDonald’s All-American type players. Every coach we’ve had has gotten them. Maybe offensive styles will change with more talented, more athletic players.

But in fact they didn't DQ themselves to most. Wade will probably be the next coach at NC State and Beard is coaching a ranked team that will be dancing next week.

I'm not a Wade fan but if the dude wins I could give two shits about an FBI sting that in reality lead to nothing for Wade other than he had to start over. I am all in on Beard and find it weak as hell IU is so scared to give him a go.
Wade missed the NCAA tournament with the #1 pick in the draft, that takes work to pull that off--have to think in the recent years it is just him and Crean at UGA are about the only ones??

So you can’t handle discussing things on this board with someone that has boiler in their name? Only person that brought up Purdue is you. Try to keep it in topic here
It has nothing to do with your name. It’s because you’re an internet troll who comes to another teams board to antagonize & argue about your team….

A few years back during one of the NC years, his teams averaged 84 plus, if you look year by year

2024--73.0 ppg
2023--73.6
2022--76.1
2021--81.0
2020--83.1
2019--82.4
2018--74.8
2017--78.4

This year they are down to 64.4 after he leaves (and well, most of the team as well!). Drake currently averaging about 70 a game, with your top 4 guys in minutes making the jump from D2--they are playing slow for a reason!

Your one of the few that support him. I never would hire a guy with one year experience to take over my company. You do realize they were 28-7 under the former coach he built the program to a 150-55 .732 over his 6 seasons
No, there are many people who support him. Checking lots of social media sites.

A really good coach can and will adapt his offense to his players. I don’t understand why people assume he’d play the same way if he had a squad full of quick and athletic players.

Wow....Who would have thought that IU would be struggling to find a suitable coach? Oh wait...that was me. Is anyone still doubting that big time coaches don't want to deal with the putrid fan base?
What in the world makes you think we are struggling to find a coach? There are some who say Dolson has had his man since Christmas. Who knows what is true at this point.

He doesn't even have to do anything, really. Just find a woman desperate enough to make an accusation. Even if it doesn't hold up there would be mass chaos and a lot of people jumping immediately to "fire him, burn him alive and then burn his ashes"
That’s what happens when you are a previous offender.

Well, sounds like the first 5 choices have declined. All big time coaches.
2nd...When has IU gotten who they wanted as coach since Sampson? Crean was not top 5, Miller might have been top 5, but other big names turned it down ahead of him, Woodson obviously was not high on the list. So that's 3 consecutive hires, without getting a coach in the top 3 of their list. Did you hear Painter? Do you think coaches don't talk to each other? He didn't come up with that shit randomly. He has more knowledge than you, and straight up told you why IU can't get their preferred coach. If you want to lie to yourself fine, that's your perogative, but Miller, Woodson, and presumably the next coach, should all show you that you are wrong. IU basketball as many of us have known it throughout the majority of our lives, is dead. And the "fans" are atleast half of the problem.
Also...if he was wrong, why is Brad Brownell a candidate?
You’re taking an awful lot of speculation as fact. How do you know who turned us down when we got Crean, Archie, or now, for that matter? How do you know Brownell is a candidate? How exactly is it fans’ fault again?

Uh...Stevens, Drew, Otzelberger, even Buzz Williams, have already declined. Smh if you think Archie Miller, or Mike Woodson was one of the top choices(as I said before, Miller may have been top 5, but not top 3) you just dont know too much about the situation. If the top choices hadn't already said no, do you think Brad Brownell would be a candidate?
You have absolutely no idea of that. Unless you are really Scott Dolson. And somehow I don’t think so.

I was just thinking that. With Knight, we could grind it out and win 50-45, or we could run with UNLV and score in the 90’s. People thought it was not a good idea for Isaiah Thomas to come here, but what did Knight do? Turn the game over to him and let him do his thing, once the proved he was ready. Now. We aren’t getting an RMK, but a good coach will adapt according to his talent.

What am I antagonizing and arguing about? I didn’t even mention my team? I’m on topic with the thread.

This is not coach Knight plus you need NBA players to win championships the last 40 years atleat one player was drafted 1st round that won the championship.

I am biased but if you believe everything this kids said is true, you might need someone to hold your hand when you cross the street. 😂

This would be the best kept secret of all time. Of course the scoop would be broke by a 23 yr old kid who heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend.

In a day and age with cameras everywhere, TMZ would have had this stuff posted within the hour.
First of all the guy talking is 43 and according to the host, very well connected at Texas, . Second of all, the host said he has heard many of the same things. So it wasn’t just the alleged previous incident, it was also paying her and pressuring her to recant. And that recant was the most lawyer speak I’ve ever seen. Host also says that Texas was warned about Beard’s issues. Finally, this is just another example of all the rumors that have been circulating about him for years.

Because he is from Iowa and it's an easier job less pressure plus Indiana is not going to hire him.
Iowa isn’t open. Will it be? Maybe. It depends if he wants a chance to be elite or if he’s better off not having high expectations. If he’s prefer Iowa, then he’s not the guy for us anyway.

43 year old senior student at Texas? He said he was 23. He also said he was passing on what someone else told him.

Again, they are looking for suckers with this clickbait. Texas doesn’t give him a warning if he beats the hell out her in front of the entire team. There would also be video of this.
