I would guess that it might be easy, but it’s beyond my ability/time:
How many nba declared yet available to return to school & in portal, shooters are still available?

I know they were the exceptions, but if an Oladipo, Morgan, Sheehee or OG were out there/unsigned, would you take them?
And I might use the last Scholly on a potential redshirt, who could develop into a “player” for injury duty.

I think Woody and his staff should always be looking to upgrade what is likely the main rotation. So if someone comes along this summer that would be an obvious starter, or even an obvious main rotation guy off the bench...they should pursue them with the full intent of signing them.

I honestly don't know what my thoughts are on recruiting guys that are likely "projects". It seems like the current dynamics lead to that being wasted time and money, with most of them transferring out before the results of those "projects" are seen.

Never know what someone means by "project" but I do think a frontcourt guy with more than 1 year would be helpful. Obviously Ballo and Hatton are gone after this year, and I'd imagine Reanu's goal would be to go pro after this year, so someone that has 2+ years would be ideal, so if there is some dynamic that would allow that, that would be a valuable spot. RIght now, it looks like we'll need to hit the portal again next year to at least fill a frontcourt spot or 2. Otherwise, I think holding the spot so you can jump if someone desireable does come along, is the best strategy. A much better constructed roster this year. Another shooter would have been nice, but I think Rice, Carlyle, Mbako, Cupps and Galloway will all have improved % this year and that will make this a much better shooting team.

"projects" that have developmental upside are useful. They fill shoes in practice, will provide experience/leaderships/minutes in years 3-4 and don't use up NIL dollars

But most of them end up transferring out because of lack of playing time. Anyone that would come to IU for little/no NIL money, and be o.k. with sitting the bench for 2 years, is very unlikely to ever be a main rotation level guy.

Like I said, I can't decide my opinion on whether the traditional route is feasible for IU any more...or that even if it was, that its practical. The transfer portal changes that dynamic dramatically.

I guess maybe every year you fill your roster with 10-11 no brainer, ready to contribute guys either from the portal, or by recruiting top 100 or so HS kids. Within that group of players, have as many multi year candidates as possible. And then maybe have a couple guys that are marginal HS 150 type kids, or "Hatton like" obvious bench guys that are there for specific needs...

But with the way everything can change at a moments notice any more...hanging on to a scholly through the summer isn't a bad practice, I wouldn't say.

I think they may also increasingly go to DII/III or NAIA schools, where they can actually play. If you already know you're not ever going to the NBA or going to get a big NIL deal but just love to play why not go to a small school where you can do that? Even DI may split into tiers of the big schools that have a ton of NIL resources and the others that don't.

Here's a guy with a big time upside (as a "project"):

: Diamant Blazi 6'8" G/F ...

Needs 20+ pounds of muscle..., but..., with a RS year to bulk up and get up to game speed but he could turn out to be a good one...

Definitely an intriguing prospect. I wonder if his social media presence is hindering him at this point?

Blazi reminds me of Troy Williams or Hanner P. If we could get the Good Troy, I’d vote for him.

I still want a shooter but if u could find a Zack Edey project set him a year or two I would be all for that.

Had to imagine anyone being as squirrelly as Troy or as big a bust as Hanner but I suppose anything is possible.

He was on campus for an Official Visit back in late March so Woodson is well aware of him...
