Did IU Spend the Most in the Portal?

Coach up some very good Mac players and you, very well, may have something. At the very least, fans are unlikely to complain about lack of 3 pt shots from the offense. That’s probably all we’ll see.
We shall see what happens could be great or could be ugly. No way of knowing until we see them play.

If that's true we way way overspent on mid major guys. I kept hearing we got outbid on guys but with the most money how does that happen.
That happens if you realize that you'll lose all your players after one season if you pay them max dollars.
It's smart to not do that in year1.

Northwestern is always outgunned at center. Not saying they are winning the league but they are competitive with guards and wing shooters.

IU had over 10 mil and spent less than these. Wow. IU could've had a very good center. Good luck in BT. Went the cheap route. I hope they do well but I'm not getting false hopes up that this guy is any better than Crean. At least Crean went after Zeller and got him.

Went the cheap route??
Supposedly spent over 10 Mil.
Crean didn't have to outbid other schools.

Florida was built with a slew of mid major guys. Auburn was as well. Teams like Texas Tech and Iowa State were also. Very, very different times were in. What IU has is upper half of the conference talent at every position. And a good coach. Could he have gotten another big? Maybe? Did he “miss” on any elite guys because he didn’t want to spend the money? Maybe?

What we know we have is a roster filled with good, accomplished, skilled basketball players. And a coach that has proven he’s a good college basketball coach.

We’ll be fine.

Some good players will be withdrawing from the NBA draft soon. I would hope that’s why DeVries held two roster spots open unless they’re actually holding them for Leal and Goode, which would be a head scratcher.

What if he IS holding those 2 spots for possible players withdrawing from draft and if he swings and misses, THEN gives last 2 spots to Leal and Goode? Huh, pretty good there ,huh? Could be a possibility, never know

Yeah, that goes without saying. That’s what I meant, but if the plan is to target draft withdrawals I think they would land one with the recruiting chops on this staff.

Recruiting chops???

Does that even exist now days?

I am sure relationships still play a part but, IMO, it is vastly more about $$$ especially with the portal and the ease of movement. I will go to school X and if I don't like how the coaches play, the school or any other number of reasons, I will just transfer, taking a boat load of cash with me.

I will go with 95% $$$ and 5% relationships.

That list looks way off -- some odd schools in there and some big omissions.
I’m not sure it matters a ton.

This is the roster that our staff built, and wanted to build. I can’t imagine that lack of money from our boosters is an issue. Our staff wanted a fresh roster, they went out and did that and spread the money around the way that they wanted. If they want to sign 2 more players they can, and still have room for Leal and Goode.

No excuses.

Yea I don’t care much about the exact numbers. We had top-10 or 15 money, top-5 for staff, and CDD made the moves he made. Now we’ll just have to see how it goes. I think he’ll fix the culture, and if he can make the tourney without much drama and land some good high schools kids for the ‘26 class, we’ll know we are on the right path to building a good program.

Because we had to spend it to fill 11-13 spots, while most teams only had a few spots to fill. It's a math principle, might be too deep for you?

How our fan base digests and reacts to a multi year build, will be interesting. Most of the best programs have built themselves through a blend of multi year and 1 year talent. But every year, the dynamics change a little bit more. So I'm not sure referencing Florida, as an example, and how Golden went less than .500 in year one, 24 wins in year two, and then 36 wins and a natty in year 3... and using that as justification for a slow start for CDD... is the end all be all. Its good for perspective, but there are examples like Pat Kelsey that make a sub .500 season much less palatable.

I do, however, get the sense that Dolson targeted guys like DeVries, and McCollum, because he saw them as longer term program and culture builders, rather than some other candidates that have fully adopted the yearly roster overhaul method.

In DeVries first two jobs, he hit the ground running and had really good years (respective to the programs he took over). I see no reason why that won't happen at IU with the roster he was able to build.
