Dexter Dennis

It doesn’t solve them at all. Dennis is far worse than Kopp offensively.

Kopp is a career 36% 3-point shooter, Dennis is a 34.4% career 3-point shooter, and was 36% career 3-point shooter before this year. Plus he's more versatile and vastly better at driving to the basket than Kopp. Dennis is the better offensive player, but is coming off a bad shooting year

He's not great on offense, but it's slander to call him a taller Rob.

His career 3 pt % is .344. Prior to last year he had shot .400, .336 & .336. His career FT% is .765 v. .649 for Rob. And the last 3 years he's been 85%, 80% & 79%. He's not much on assists, and his 2 pt career % is only .400 v. .399 for Rob.

I think he's more like a shorter Kopp than a taller Phin.

His career shooting #s are .400 (2s), .344 (3s) & .765 (FTs). As explained above, he's really more like an 80% FT. Kopp's #s are .416, .360 & .853. On average, he takes just short of 1 more 3 per game than Kopp. He's presumably a better defender than Kopp. And he averages 7.2 rebs per every 40M played v. 4.3 for Kopp.

We do have to remember that he's played on a relatively better team in a lesser conference than MK.

He may be worthwhile if the goal if to toughen up the team. He's not going to be a game changer.
Lol now factor in that Dennis was putting up those atrocious numbers at a mid major. They will only get worse in the Big Ten.

Neither Kopp nor Dennis are B1G level starters.

Bates will be a far and away better offensive player than Dennis this year. I’d put any amount of money on that.

Dennis isn’t being recruited to play the 2. He’s being recruited to play the 3. I don’t see him as an upgrade to Kopp, and he’s very similar Galloway. Someone will be getting Creaned to bring him in. I just don’t see him as an upgrade.
Than it’s not an argument. It’s a win win. Better depth. I hope bates isn’t a 2 but he was subbed in at the 3 too. I believe the 2/3 will be interchangeable in woodys system. I think Dennis could be solid. Find out soon enough.

The stagnant #s thing is very Kopp-like.

I don't understand why you think his addition would mean less Kopp next year. He is PS-like in his size. A lesser shooter than PS, but not by much, and a better rebounder & defender.
A lot quicker. That’s the key difference.

And I hope we never have to find out. McNeil is an upgrade. Dennis is not. Archie ignored shooting for 4 years. I’m shocked Woodson is doing the same.

Ehhh...its pretty easy to see watching him play that he's a better defender than Kopp and Stewart. And Wichita State, and their competition level, isn't THAT much lower than IU and theirs. Maybe 20 years ago it was, these days, its not a huge difference.

Defensive player of the year in their conference...at his size and athleticism...makes it a virtual certainty that he's a better defender than Kopp and Stewart. And I actually think both of those guys were better than many gave them credit for on this forum.

Geronimo is the only player on our team that can do some of the things he can do athletically, and Dennis is A LOT better perimeter defender than Geronimo is. Versatility is an underappreciated trait. Its why teams like Villanova, Baylor, etc... are as good as they are. They have multiple guys in the game, at all times, that are effective guarding and scoring on multiple positions. Dennis is a guy that can very effectively guard really good players from the 1-4 positions. We don't have a single guy on our team, as of now, that is like that.

The main thing Stewart and Kopp are/were better at than Dennis is stand still shooting. And neither of them got enough shots, nor made enough of them, for that to be much of a factor in their favor. I'd say Stewart is probably a tad better ball handler...but we don't need much of that with JHS coming in, and Tamar likely taking on a larger ball handling/playmaking role.
Very good post, but you'll agree he doesn't address our offensive woes, although he's not less effective than Kopp overall imo.

It's hard for me to believe we'd take him in the portal without also getting a pure shooter, but who knows

One thing it does is create more competition. It would mean he could cut into minutes for Kopp, Bates, JG, and Trey. So they better be highly motivated and in the gym and the weight room multiple hours per day. Else they should practice their bench antics for watching their teammates play.

I’d take him. Upgrades our length and athleticism on the wing. Not great shooting numbers, but he has decent form, looks comfortable going to the basket, and is an explosive athlete. We need more long athletic wing players. Dennis, IMO, would be an overall upgrade over what we got from Stewart/Kopp.

Xavier, Tamar, Trey, JHS, Jordan, Miller…this is what we’re looking at as of now. One of the ways Woodson can stabilize/improve that wing lineup is someone that is athletic and versatile defensively. Jordan, Tamar, and Miller aren’t exactly lock down defenders. Adding an athletic, slashing, long, perimeter defender like Dennis might make it easier to play more offensive minded wings like Tamar and Jordan.
Not great shooting numbers is all I need to know. We need shooting period.

Stewart was a pure shooter, so shooting alone isn't all IU needs

I don’t want a pure shooter. Purdue had those. We need athletic players that can create and shoot the 3 near 40%. Those don’t grow on trees. We had a pure shooter in Stewart. Problem is we don’t have enough guys on the floor that were hard covers. It’s easy to guard teams that have unwilling and ineffective shooters that can’t drive.

No, it also needs good plays run for said pure shooter.

Would you take a Sasha Stevanovic? What about a Nick Zeisloft? Both were really bad defenders.
And couldn’t manufacture shots. We might’ve been the easiest team to guard in the B1G.

I mostly agree with your take, but Dennis can't be much of a driver if his career 2 pt shooting % is .400.

I would take both in a heartbeat. Both were very important members of good college teams.
You take them but not for the minutes. You take them when you need a shot. 12 minutes or less. I’d take Jordy over either.

Umm no, I would take both as 25+ minute starters. Same with Jordy. Give me a lights out shooter over a stud defensive player every day. This is 2022.

For those that desperately want Dennis, which player in the team are you willing to Crean in order to get him? Bringing on Dennis means someone is leaving. Who do you want it to be?

I disagree. You aren’t winning the tournament with players like that. You win a bunch of games but to many teams can lock them up.

Agree, but I think Dennis is only about 80% of what you're looking for.

2 stats concern me; 40% career on 2s; 2.0 assists every 40M.

No doubt the guy could play. He'd probably start for about 310 out of the 350 D1 schools.

You just have to acknowledge exactly what it is you're getting.

You aren’t winning the tournament with Dexter Dennis either. We have been dogshit for a long time now. I would love to get to winning the Big Ten and making the sweet 16 again. The focus shouldn’t be winning the championship right now.

If TJD leaves we have 2 open spots. And no one "desperately" wants Dennis. He would make us tougher, which along with shooting is something we've needed for many years.

Zeisloft would not upgrade this team, he'd be a downgrade from Stewart. He was a 20 min a game player that scored less than 7 pts a game each year he was at IU. He only was getting shots because of the other talent around him.

He took away a defender every minute he was on the court. He would be a huge upgrade to Stewart.

And if TJD comes back as expected?
I don't expect it. Woodson said the magic words--"He's ready". TJD repeated the magic words in his announcement.

If he comes back, you've got Reneau, Dennis & McNeil to look at. I 'd prefer Reneau if there isn't another departure. I'd be indifferent between McNeil and Dennis.

That’s not what I or anyone meant. We don’t play a pure shooter style. That’s what we are implying. We need athletes that can shoot. Not guys who’s only thing is perimeter shooting running sets just for them. Will we run some? Yes. Parker and Kopp both had some stuff run to get them open. Especially out of bounds off time outs. Sasha is exactly that type. No frigin thanks.

I would bet TJD comes back. Reneau, Dennis, and McNeil will all decide before TJD does. Highly likely we over sign.

So which of the guys would you like to get rid of in order for Dennis to come onboard. Leal? Galloway? Geronimo? Duncomb?

McNeil could be another Kopp - put up good numbers because of lack of options on a poor performing team

So did every other player. Those teams were hard to guard. He’s really not a major upgrade if any. Our problem this year was we rarely had 3 people on the floor that was a threat to shoot. When race hit shots that helped tremendously. He just wasn’t consistent enough to draw anyone. It’s slim pickings right now for the type of player woody wants. Of course all of this goes away if Bates, Race, JG and the top 3-4 guys hit open shots.

I'm hoping to see a lot of X and JHS in the back court at the same time. But all speculative....none of this really matters until the dust settles over the summer.

He can though. He’s 34%. Is it great? No but he’s as good as what we have but quicker doing it. Do I think we settle for him? Maybe.

Lol so you admit our issue was shooting, yet you are clamoring for a guy who can’t shoot to replace Kopp in the lineup? Makes total sense.

He’s gotten worse every single year from 3. He isn’t going to suddenly get better playing against better competition.

Who are you comfortable losing in order to get him?

Guys a massive upgrade over Kopp. May not be as good a flat line shooter as Kopp, but he can slash and get to the rim. Our starting 2 and 3 guards last year averaged 12 ppg between the two and neither could do anything but catch and shoot. Need athleticism and length on the perimeter.

Reneau's visiting 4/15. If he wants to come here, give it to him. Dennis may be a back-up plan for all we know. If TJD & Race stay and we end up with Dennis as our only portal guy I'm ok with that. We'll be very good in that event.

He took away a defender every minute he was on the court. He would be a huge upgrade to Stewart.

Zeisloft was a 41% shooter that took 4.5 3s a game. Stewart was a 39% shooter that took 4 3s a game, so highly similar shooting threats, but Stewart was a better defender and was more productive with rebounding and assists. Your opinion of Zeisloft is inflated because of lowered expectations from a guy that was the 7th best scoring threat on the team. The 2016 team would have been better with Stewart instead of Zeisloft
