It’s a shame that the 4 years Woodson coached at IU will forever tarnish his 4 years on the court here as a player. This ‘hire from within’ mentality turned out about as poorly as could be drawn up, and should serve as a cautionary tale for other would-be alum coaches.

I think Benson might have supposedly went toe to toe with Coach Knight at least once.

I remember that Sheron Wilkerson went head to head with Knight…..literally!

I honestly think a big part of it was Woody was too old to do the job. Recruiting and PR stuff take a lot of effort, and it gets harder and harder to do this as one gets older.

Doesn't seem to have affected CCC.

Benson questioned CRMK about his language. I do not think he had a confrontation.
I dont remember Kitchell being confrontational during his playing career. But he did after he graduated. Hilarious at times.
The only one I remember was CML. That was confrontational. And I bet he was right. Hope he gets some success in coaching, he seems to have worked hard at it.

Regarding hiring an alum, to have a fair shot at least hire one who is currently coaching college basketball. The woody era was doomed from the start. He really wasn't a hire from within hire either. No one seems to remember him having much to do with the program in 30 years.

The fact that I was halfway proud and excited to see that he was there…is yet another reason to dislike Woodson, and slump my shoulders and shake my head towards his tenure at IU.

I’m just guessing here, but I bet on top of knowing the PR side of being there…DeVries probably just enjoyed being at a high school state championship game or two. And he didn’t look down on it because he’s coached college for a long time.

I don’t know what high school basketball is like where he’s been but I imagine he was pretty impressed at the atmosphere.

Yeah I agree. Age is an individual thing obviously, Cig is about the same age as Woodson but seems to have 10x the energy. Woodson just seemed to have one speed…. Slow.

This isn’t an excuse for Woodson, as he shouldn’t have taken the job if he wasn’t up to it. But I’d forgotten that his college injury was his back and how quickly he came back from it. I’m sure that’s part of his problem with his bad back now. Can’t be a good thing to have a serious injury that young. It still just makes me angry how much he trashed his legacy. He was a superhero then for coming back the rest of the season.
