DeVries Attending State Championship Games

Wonder if Michael Lewis would join IU as Coach DD’s top assistant?

He knows a thing or two about hard nosed basketball. Maybe he's giving DeVries some pointers.

I feel really good about our coach. Wants to run a big time program in everything that entails.

And, he knows how.

Guess Willdog doesn't want those things for Indiana.

LOL, my post wasn't even in the slightest referring to Mike Woodson's ability or tenure. Hadn't even thought of that. I was thinking about our guys' extensive background and why we hired him over others.

But people see what they want.

No, IPFW moved to D1 several years before Dane took the job, joining the Summit League during his tenure as coach.
I thought Summit league was the first time for D1 affiliation, but now I see it was 01.

Regardless, apple and oranges to Lewis who has had a 20yr string of prior assitant jobs, including high D1 and taking a mid major HC job at his age.

I wouldn't think a head coach leaves mid-contract to take an assistant or associate HC position, regardless of the money. Your goal is to be a HC and that would follow you around in every interview and recruiting battle going forward.
Holtman left Gardner Webb to become an assistant at Butler. There are also other examples.

The fact that I was halfway proud and excited to see that he was there…is yet another reason to dislike Woodson, and slump my shoulders and shake my head towards his tenure at IU.

I’m just guessing here, but I bet on top of knowing the PR side of being there…DeVries probably just enjoyed being at a high school state championship game or two. And he didn’t look down on it because he’s coached college for a long time.

and having a former Hoosier win a state championship? Hope CDD was in the locker room after the game congratulating him! Mending fences with the Hoosier family is just another part of the job. One I really expected CMW to excel at, but alas....

I think he mended some fences…especially early on. But outside his own friends, and the guys that played around the time he played, at IU… it didn’t take long for most others to see how he was running the program, and be turned off by it.

IU North, your last sentence is so damning!! Hard to believe despite being an NBA guy for so long, and Woody having played Indy HS ball and being on iu teams full of Indiana HS guys, Woody would have ignored this facet of the job, especially now, when college coaches from all over the country flock to the state to recruit.

He's also developing those pipeline relationships with HS coaches in the right venue. That is critical in Indiana and at Indiana.
I’m hopeful he also just genuinely enjoyed watching the state championship games. I know it’s a different experience for the IU coach, than for a normal fan. But come on…twist my arm, I just have to go to Gainbridge and sit courtside and watch Indiana high school basketball state title games…ugh!

Glad we have a guy that will seemingly be where he should be.

I honestly think a big part of it was Woody was too old to do the job. Recruiting and PR stuff take a lot of effort, and it gets harder and harder to do this as one gets older.

Yeah I agree. Age is an individual thing obviously, Cig is about the same age as Woodson but seems to have 10x the energy. Woodson just seemed to have one speed…. Slow.
