Darian Dale DeVries (born April 7, 1975) is the head men's basketball coach at Indiana University. He was previously the head coach at West Virginia from 2024 to 2025.
On March 18, 2025 Indiana University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics announced that Darian DeVries would replace Mike Woodson as head coach of their Men’s Basketball Team.

Iowa is AD revenue is like $165M and WVU is around $110M. Iowa is definitely in much better shape, but maybe their resources aren't going to bball?

Just my opinion, I don't think it's Devries and
New York Lol GIF by Lifetime
I'd still guess McCollum right now.
I hope you're right.

Maybe Dolson went after bigger fish and he didn’t get a nibble? I know it’s hard for some on here to believe but the beloved basketball program is not the desirable job that it once was.
He had to settle for Woodson, what has changed that would make coaches come knocking on Dolson’s door?

It seems like he's a guy that's largely flown under the radar. But there seems to be some smoke on him being the guy...so lets discuss him.

I think he's probably a solid choice, but there are a few concerns I'd have with him.

1. How much of his recent success was attributed to his son? They seemed to fall off a fair bit when Tucker got hurt this year. That isn't abnormal, he's really good, and most college programs fall off when their best player goes down...but if you take his last 3 years at Drake away, he doesn't have a lot to go off of.

2. He never won the Valley regular season championship. He won 20+ games every year, and fielded really good Valley level teams, but he never won the league.

3. Mixed results in post season tournaments. On one hand, he won some Valley tournaments, which is good. But then, he hasn't won any NCAA tournament games. The success in the Valley tournaments is probably a good sign with respect to IU...as it shows he's able to get them playing well, and beating, peer opponents, in March. IU's peer opponents, hopefully, will be top 15-20 level teams every year. So if he can beat his peers at IU, probably will mean some NCAA success on top of B10 success.

I'd MUCH rather have McCollum than DeVries. I'd much rather have guys like McCasland, Beard, May...obviously some of the whales. But I think I'd rather have DeVries than Brownell types. But that is more of a "feeling" than anything else. I haven't committed really any time studying his philosophies, offenses, defenses, etc... Has anyone on here?
He plays a variation of packline, but his offense - which was five out this year - sucked ass. Might as well hire Miller back. Dv had a few good offensive years at Drake, but nothing to get excited about. I hate canned defenses, especially that one.

He never settled for Woodson by all accounts he was told to hire him by quinn. I do not think he was even allowed to do a proper coaching search and he would have hired Matta but Quinn said no.

Maybe in the NIL and revenue share world, the job is very attractive to coaches that don't have the resources that Indiana has and is committed to. Until we have a coach named, you're just bloviating about how awful the job is.

Par for the recent course. Underwhelming

Ugh...damn it.

His metrics numbers seem very up and down. Don't love that. I don't know why I'm letting all these smokey rumors do this to me...but for some reason it does seem like DD might be the guy. And the little I've read up on him today, the packline info you just shared, etc... NOT a huge fan of this hire, if it happens.

I’m sure McCollum, Beard, Wade will spank IU in the near future. Hopefully we get to play these coaches for Scott Dolsons viewing pleasure

I fully expect beard will kill it and make a final four in the near future. This was not the hire that is going to excite the fan base after four years of Woodson. Devries will have win and win fast get the fans fully engaged again after the last eight years.

No but many will spend the next few months doing what they did after the woodson hire. Talking themselves into believing this is a really really good hire and a guy who will kill it here. After the last eight years I am at a wait and show me on the court approach now. Only a big name would of had me thinking different.

What makes you think this is the hire?

Just way too much smoke this time and its not from the " iu insiders". I just read one claiming we had stevens up until Saturday and he suddenly changed his mind. Give me a break the fiction some of these guys tell is unreal. I guess anything to protect their trolling. Suddenly changed his mind he had four years to think about it. LOL!

Any word on if Buckner has had anything to do with this hiring process? If Quinn likes the Devris institute, then it’s a hard pass imo!

NIL.

One big benefit of a McCollum hire would be getting Bennett Stirtz (presumably). I've never seen he or Tucker Devries play, but just looking at the #s. Stirtz' are better. .386 on 3s, .551 on 2s, .795 on FTs, 5.7 assists per every 40M played v. 2.0 TOs.....
Stirtz is good and would be great for IU.

So IU hired a guy who has never coached a team to an NCAA tournament win, at any level/division? It's way too early for April Fools' Day, but you've gotta be shittin' me right?

Louisville did the same with Kelsey and it hasn’t been too bad.

DeVries may end up great, but yet again we passed on better coaches because of some misplaced sense of righteousness. Wade or Beard would have been better imo, but I don’t care about the off the court stuff…

we're like ND football but only about 1/10th as self righteous

So UK got rid of a coach with many NCAA tournament wins (and a Championship) for one with zero. Smart, very smart.

So UNC replaced a coach with many NCAA tournament wins (and 3 Championships) with one with zero. Smart, very smart.

So Duke replaced a coach with many NCAA tournament wins (and 5 Championships) with one with zero. Smart, very smart.
Yeah real similar circumstances 🙄

I am just going to find another program to follow if its DeVries. There are no words.
Same. Maybe I'll just follow McCollum and Beard's teams. They are winners.
In all seriousness, I will likely not watch a single IU game in the coming year.....my apathy is at an all time high and this was the last chance to recover it. Off to a new team. Good luck everyone.
