Dakich shut down Jordan?

Ya know what? I watched the complete game against UN for the first time in decades...and that was one of the worst called games Ive ever seen. Horrendous example of the NCAA wanting UN to win...and having one ref trying to make it happen. Doherty undercutting Alford late in the game looked no accident to me...hatchman did his job...almost. Smith proved he was no genius either by calling a bad game. Really kind of beat himself with his arrogance that we can win in any situation HS...but what a team win...what a leader in ALford...what discpline...where is all that now? Not Knight...good ridance to a man how needed discipline himself in the worst way...but the players and their character. Everything we didnt have this season...when will it change...if ever...

Then laid an egg against Md. A team they should have beaten to go to the final 4.

This seems unlikely. The 1984 IU-NC game was on a Thursday and the State Finals would have been on the following Saturday....

I guess they could have announced it 2 days later and the crowd still could have gone crazy.

You beat me to the punch. The announcers also interviewed Alford on the floor afterward where he wished his dad and the New Castle community well on their upcoming Final Four appearance - which they lost.

Dan played good defense that game but the idea that he "shut him down" has always been tongue in cheek. It wasn't until years later when people saw how Jordan played in playoff situations that the comments came out. It accelerated when Dan got his radio gig.

Maybe they mentioned the upcoming game and we were still talking about beating UNC.

I could be remembering 1981 because we were at MSA that year too and won! Whatever the case all 4 sections of the arena cheered on IU that day. It was beautiful and the way it should always be.

It was one of the most memorable IU wins ever and Dan played a great game. Unfortunately, every time I hear about Dan shutting down Jordan, I'm also reminded of him getting his pocket picked by Kenton Edelin (sp?) that cost us the trip to the Final Four.

Dak looked like a fat fifth grader out there as he wheeled around with that nerve racking handle of his. My grandfather was yelling "look out, look out", but Dan relentlessly bobbled on like a Game 6 Bill Buckner, almost oozing confidence as he ran his one-man four corners delay game to send his Hoosiers to Seattle. When Edelin swiped the ball and streaked the other way, Danny got in a couple more phantom dribbles as if he were carefully adding the finishing touches to a masterpiece.

Sweet memories of when the games mattered:)
