It's a joke, but you made my point for me. When people hear he "choked her," many imagine he came at her full Bob Knight on Neil Reed style.
I think all the details matter and I think it is highly likely the officer's affidavit is slanted and contains inaccuracies (not that you have to believe it all in order to believe Beard did enough that you want to stay away from his as the university's flagship hire). It's internally inconsistent and she later recanted.
I'm also pointing out how people think they know the whole story and do not. It's common for people to fill in details using some narrative they already know or one they want to be true. All people do it--trial lawyers exploit and have to defend against this tendency all the time.
Theoretically, here, sure it could be a different thing. For example, I wrestle with my son all the time. Headlocks are common. Putting my hands around his neck like Knight did to Reid has never occurred. Was Beard trying to restrain her from attacking him when he did that? I don't know. Her story after the arrest and his story suggest that is possible. All in all, no matter what, it's an ugly situation and IU would be justified in not hiring Beard because of it. But I don't buy the one-size-fits-all, 100% oppressor v. 100% victim approach to every domestic dispute or man v. woman physical altercation. I admit that might be true here, but I don't know enough to be able to judge and I don't think anyone else does, either.
He is but I would not even attempt to get a discussion going on this because those that are 100% against him no matter what and going to chime in and its going to be a toxic discussion imo. The bottom line is Dolson will hire who he wants not want some guys on a message board want.

Beard is the absolute grand slam hire for IU. He’s perfect for the job in every way. Would win more than Brad imo. But IU will screw it up. Guaranteed.
I’m just confused by everyone that wants Beard. Do you not believe the charges are real or just don’t care if he abused his wife/fiance.
And my follow up that I posed to Lucy, if you acknowledge he did abuse her, what more would he have to do to change your mind? A kick in the face, kicking her in the stomach if she’s pregnant, throw her down the stairs? Where do you draw the line? None of you pro-Beard guys seem willing to answer this question.

Trew initially placed an emergency call from their house and told responding officers Beard had strangled her from behind to the point where she couldn’t breathe for several seconds, and bit her when an argument turned physical.
She withdrew her statement. Said she was the aggressor and that he never meant to hurt her.
He just got his butt kicked by Byington (Vanderbilt) head to head in a Conference game..., and Byington would appear to have the much less talented team...
That outcome alone should knock Beard down the list a peg or two...

I don't get the over-the-top love for Beard. Sure, he's a good coach and would do well at IU, but I don't think he's head and shoulders above many of the other (realistic) names that are being bandied about. I'd be more inclined to take a real hard look at McCollum or TJO or Byington. The one problem with McCollum and Byington is them being just one year into their current jobs. That's got to make it tough to make a jump, like we saw with May.
