I admittedly didn’t pay much attention to any of this b/c I really had no idea it would be relevant. Now that it is can someone tell me how the CFP meshes with the bowl system and what plausible scenarios could IU be facing regarding travel destinations come January? TIA.

If we make the playoffs, the first round is Dec 20 and 21. The higher seed plays at home. So if we play on the road, it will be very hard to get tickets.

As Zeke said, first round is at campus sites, one game Friday night and three on Saturday. The next round, the Quarterfinals, on or about New Year’s Day, are at traditional bowl venues including the Orange and Rose bowls. Then the semis in sites that have already been determined and the final in Atlanta.

Don't mind the higher seed getting home field but they treat it like a bowl and split the tickets evenly. That way all teams are rewarded for making the 12.
