CBS Top 100

I hit 81 out of 100 threes the other night. No one was guarding me. It took me about 30 minutes (i had to stop and rest about half way through).

Mgbako had people guarding him closely. Purdue's players have never had to face that while at Purdue.
exactly!
when you are wide open a pure shooter knocks down much better than 44%. Loyer will likely struggle with pressure. And zone defenses leave wide open shots all the time.
(i like Smith and expect he will have a productive season...bad for p-u if he doesnt)

RPI is currently at 20. Should be in tournament again. PU, well they do have that women's BB banner to write home about, but that is it.
Don't they have the Hellman's Mayonaise banner for some thing or another? Ord/Jackskip/kern always claimed it was more legit than three of IU's banners.

Mgbako is a better outside shooter than anyone on Purdue roster.... That's a interesting observation care to elaborate more? Mgbako is a talented player and should improve. Not asking much to to get better than 32% he shot last year from 3 don't you think? Purdue's guards(including Colvin) all shot over 40% from 3 point line last year.

Careful what you write Billy Madison
Lets see how Moze does when he is guarded.

Muscle memory. It’s kind of like how I still know how to beat all the boxers in Mike Tyson’s punch out… hundreds of thousands of reps mean I’ll be able to make 3 pointers as long as my arms work and I’m able to stand.

If I was guarded as closely as Mgbako usually is I would be lucky to make 20 out of 100. If I had to move to get to my shots, that number probably goes pretty close to 0.

Michigan has worse guards and is going to play with two bigs who can't play away from the basket that are worse than Ballo/Reneau.
Well Michigan in their tune-up with a good Oakland team in Detroit shot 43% from three making 15 threes! Donaldson who played at Auburn, showed he will be one of the best PGs in the country. Their bigs (you said can't play away from the basket)
made 7 of the 15 threes! Michigan is going to be good!

yeah blimpy like this guy and his coharts have. When they aren't posting on this site 50 times a day about their inferior product the last decade they get away to comic-com conventions I hear 4-5 times a year.

Get a hobby like he said !

You need a hobby.
Plenty of hobbies, golf, woodworking, yard work, traveling, refinishing old furniture, and reading the good book!
I try to read IU comics every chance I get! But I like to study the ins and outs of college basketball, stats, team schedules and coaching philosophies! I used to coach basketball and played one year of college ball. Love the sport! Thank You!

What seems evident is that your only hobby is posting dumb takes on IU's board.

how old are you? I have a shoulder injury (I'm sure it's a rotator cuff) that makes shooting from any distance, even FTs, a lot harder. It's weaker, but also like a mechanical "catch" and I just can't control the ball nearly as well. I can still shoot FTs OK, but not nearly as well and they just come out flat. When it was really bad, I'd try and shoot normally and the ball would only go a few feet. At least I haven't had the "other" dysfunction a lot of older guys get!

Have you ever tried FT golf? I always tried to get the kids I coached to play it between practices and would see who had the best score. You shoot 18 FTs, and a swish (absolutely no rim) is a birdie, a make w any rim is a par and a miss is a bogey. I'm guessing you can get to double digits under par. I think my best ever was -9. It really is a great drill because you'll be kind of frustrated that you aren't scoring very well and then realize you made like 16 of 18 FTs. Helps way more of your off shots still be makes.

Every poll in the country believes we have elite talent but without coming right out and saying it, no one has any faith in Woody as a coach. They all think what we do. Ballo, Reneau and Mgbako will be playing major minutes together. That's insane but the closer we get to the start of the season I can see it coming.

I'm 46... I've never played that. I'll have to give it a try. Quick count, -9 is pretty legit!!

My sons love golf too, I might suggest they try this out with various different types of shots. I'll go out and "post a score in the clubhouse"...and see if they can beat it.

Thanks for the new drill, I thought I had heard of them all.

Side note, I too have some shoulder issues. For me its mainly any throwing motion, shooting seems fine still, especially after getting warmed up for a few minutes. Throwing a football though...at times is no bueno.

-9 was a really good score for me. That's when I was coaching and didn't have the shoulder issue, so I was practicing it at least once a day or more (I had a hoop at home and work). Practicing it helps because you are really laser focused on swishes, not just makes. I remember one of our players saying, "wait, you can try and swish it?" It makes you automatically begin to shoot with more arc and look for that "perfect motion". As a result, a ton more of your "misses" still go in. I'd guess when I was practicing almost daily, I went from a 70s % FT shooter to closer to 85-90%. And, I never thought of myself as a shooter.

Oddly, with my shoulder, throwing is still pretty good unless I'm really trying to thow hard, which I just don't do anymore. Shooting doesn't cause me pain, it just has a "catch" and a bit of weakness that makes my a much worse FT shooter.

We had a specific hoop in our gym in college that made a distinct clicking noise when you swished it and it hit the bottom of the breakaway box. We didn't play this golf game, but my roommate and I would finish many practices with a bet on who could get the most clicks out of 20. The most either of us ever got was 14 (Me). There were many arguments, however, on what constituted a click. Lost in these competitions, and arguments, were any attention on actual misses. Most of these competitions we'd both hit all 20.

Modified your golf game a bit. Mainly just doing 3s instead of FTs.

"Breaking Par" would be a pretty good threshold for a high level shooter. 12 makes, 6 or more swishes.

I did it first try last night (-2). But my son has a little bit more of a flatter arch on his shot, not nearly as many "swishes". This might be a good drill for him to focus on getting the ball up just a little bit more. He's very competitive, and loves golf. If I know him, he'll play numerous rounds until he beats my -2 score.

I've got a time element I'm thinking of adding for him. Some sort of bonus or penalty for finishing the 18 shots under a certain amount of time. Need to figure out a good pace for that.

It's really a great drill because you can challenge yourself and it can be challenging regardless of the quality of player you are. I've often wondered if Steph or Klay could get to -18. I'm sure they could for at least a stretch or time or two. Don't neglect having your son do it for FTs too... he may play for the Hoosiers one day!

The only way to play it is no "starting over", or starting mid shooting session on a make or something. You have to decide you're starting a round, and finish it out. Even if you're +10 or something.

Steph and Klay would routinely shoot double digits under par from 3, I would think. They, for sure, would need to add a time element to it.

absolutely. You have to finish the game and not start over. I didn't mean that when I said stretch, I just meant that I'm sure they could swish 18 shots in a row for sure, if you looked at the last 10 of 1 game and the next 8 of the next, or pulled out an 18 shot segment of maybe shooting 50 or 100. The other valuable element of the game is the added pressure when you're down to your last few shots and have a really good score going and a chance at your PR. Adds an element of pressure to it. I think it's a really good drill and I think I'd be encouraging/making kids do it even up to the college level and constantly be asking at practice who had the best score in FT Golf from the week? Great that you can get players practicing FTs/shots on their own, and especially not just putting up 200-300 shots with no pressure or purpose. Really helps focus. Plus, when I was coaching rec league kids I hated taking time from such a limited practice schedule to shoot FTs. So, I'd try and get them to do that and ask at every practice what everyone's best FT Golf score was.
