It seems like at the end of last season there was a conversation between Painter and Edwards that went something like this:

PAINTER: Carsen, we're really going to suck next year if you leave for the NBA. What do we have to do to get you to stay?

EDWARDS: I'll stay if I can take any shot I want whenever I want, and I don't have to play any defense. Oh, and I want to lead the country is scoring.

PAINTER: Deal.

I watched PU last night vs MSU, just to see them once before IU plays them. Edwards jacks up shots at will, very poor shot selection. Painter said nothing after several forced bricks by Edwards. Painter and PU needs Edwards points, any way he can get them. He also barrelled down the lane for a charge. He looked short on the court, but strong. He's an active strong player, passes well, but shoots low percentage shots at will with no conscience, and seemed selfish at times as he did not even look for his teammates and just focused on creating his own low percentage shot. Michigan State was comfortably in the lead and eventually blew them out.

I thought Purdue played some damn good D for 3/4 of that game....they got it to the point where they were 3-4 points behind with less than 10m to go, despite playing pathetic O. Edwards was completely out of control with his shot selection. Had he played under control, they might have stayed in the game until the end. I can understand Edwards being frustrated having to play with those stiffs, but damn.........

Purdue's D was good. O was awful.

The question is. Does IU have anyone to stop Edwards? Like you said Edwards does shoot at will. If IU does not have anyone to stay in front, he is going drive all day. If IU has no one cover in the perimeter, he is going to light it up beyond the arc. He is liable to score 40 plus points against y’all. To be honest, he will need to. For what I’ve seen, I don’t see any IU player capable of stopping him. For some reason Painter is locked in starting Haarms and Eifert where, even though they are freshman, Williams and Wheeler are better scoring options. Getting back to Carsen, I think he has a lot of pride and confidence. Moving forward, I don’t see him having another bad shooting night like he just did against M$U. Good or bad the dude is fearless.

Dude is selfish. Painter knows he's his meal ticket this season, so he says nothing. Edwards just forced up another fall away, off balance brick. He looked very strong, but very short. Any of the IU guards will have several inches on him.

Edwards ain't beating IU by himself, somebody else will have to step up for Purdue to beat IU. I'll take Langford/Morgan over any two player combination that Purdue can throw out there and when Phinisee gets back you can throw him in the mix as well.

I don't know if I'd use the word "fearless" to describe his play last night. It's not like he was defusing IEDs on some roadside in Iraq. He was, pretty obviously, trying to look like an AA for the national TV audience. Winning the game appeared to be a secondary objective.

As to our games with Purdue, he could definitely go off, no doubt, esp. at PU. Or he could stink it up again. No way to tell.

Edwards stunk it up on National TV in a blowout loss. He was just not very impressive to have that poor shot selection while obviously over-trying to impress.

He plays like he does whether it’s national TV or some jive team in the preseason. I do think he is trying to be like the kid that played for Oklahoma last year, his name escapes me. He is the only scorer we have on the team right now. When he is on he is on. Last night he was off and I don’t think it was because of some locked down D M$U was playing.

No, lock down defense comes at the next level which he won't be playing.

Rob Phinisee locked up Markus Howard. Who is twice as good as Edwards.

I haven't seen them play this season but I saw him last year and the kid can slash and shoot when he had threats around him.

IUs best face up defender is Green. He is quick, has excellent foot positioning and quick hands. In your opinion will he be able to keep Edwards from going off? You used the word "stop", players like Edwards rarely get stopped...but they can be held in check.

This is a very good description of the game. CE had a horrible game. I do think IU fans would love him if he played for IU. He wouldn't be the whole team like he seems to be at times. I'm hoping by the time Purdue plays IU T Williams will be starting. He's slowly forcing Painter to make this move. He had a double double against some good competition. IU has 2 solid players to Purdue's one.

Make Carsen and Cline drive instead of shoot or jack up contested shots, game over.

I haven't seen a loose cannon like Edwards in awhile: that isn't a good thing. PU doesn't have a choice, though.

Well....MSU played pretty damn well on D,....esp McQuaid on Edwards. McQuaid's a really good player.

Honestly coming into this year I thought IU would sweep Purdue no problem. But with the ridiculous amount of injuries and all these slow starts I have no idea what's going to happen in Mackey.

The other day at Michigan our bench was Moore, Fitzner, and Mcroberts. That simply isn't going to get it done on the road against even the ok teams. This darn team has got to get healthy!

This year's purdue team doesn't look like a typical pork chop coached team. Even all my boiler up co-workers are quiet about them. Actually, they've been quiet about everything for most of the year. The only time I've really heard them say much was when all of them were verklempt during brohm's annual pay raise negotiation period.

my predictions:

1. Romeo gets booed whenever he touches the ball. At some point the chant of "overrated" will be heard. Same goes for Rob if he is back. The Paint crew will really lay into the home town prodigal son
2. Either JM or Romeo- 2 fouls before 10 min mark in 1st half
3. Some role player on Purdue will get their career high
4. a bunch of grumpy fans in ugly sweaters will be seen making the traveling sign (arms & wrists rotating in a tight spiral) multiple times whenever IU is on offense
5. An overall ugly game; this PU squad isn't capable of playing an aesthetically pleasing style of ball
6. "IU Sucks" cheer- wouldn't be a Purdue game without it
7. Edwards puts up 25 shots

If we don't spot them a 10+ point lead early like we seem to do in every game...we win a close one. But really need Rob P and Davis available.

At least TV Ted won't be doing the game.

Edwards might put up over 30 shots.
He shot it 29 times against MSU, with a blistering 2-13 from 3pt range.

A crowd with very low basketball IQs in a purple blinded rage will scream vulgarities at the IU players and the hundreds of IU fans in attendance.

Carsen Edwards is a good player. But the question is, can he lead his team to wins when he goes for 30 or 40, or is that just what the defense is giving away?

Purdue at Mackey will be shooting lights out against IU. They always do at home. I won’t be a bit surprised if IU loses that game big, even with guys back. We’ll probably be down big early.

Half of the things listed will happen at IU, just insert a different name. I imagine one of Purdue's players will have 2 fouls before the tv timeout. I also think every time CE touches the ball a chant of overrated will start. Most of these things mentioned happen at every game when a team is on the road. Also, I'm glad TV Teddy isn't doing the game.

CE is over-rated. He tested the NBA water without much interest, especially with only 2 rounds of the NBA Draft. Not many 5'10" guards in the NBA. This is the case of a college player who does not translate well to the next level.

Darn, that means he plays for Purdue again next season. I was hoping this would be the last of him against IU.

CE will probably leave knowing there is no help again next season at PU. Late 2nd round or undrafted is the likely scenario. Purdue recruits good but not great talent, that end up as 4 year college players.

Edwards is far from over-rated. If he played for IU, y'all will have him as a lottery pick by now and you know it. I'm not sure about his NBA chances, right now he is one the best college players. Not that it makes too much difference in NBA but as far as his height, he is actually 6 foot.

agree- not sure what another season would do to for him other than to increase injury risk and possibly slide further down....Bracey Wright effect-the longer you stay, the more obvious it becomes you will struggle at the next level.

CE is "listed" at 6'0"
CE was measured at 5'10 1/2"
CE is not a NBA lottery pick, or he would have already left for the NBA.
He is a good college player who is now forced to provide the bulk of the scoring on a depleted PU roster. And his forced shots are actually hurting his pro status as he is seen as struggling at times to create his own shot even against college level players, if he was in the NBA he would face bigger more athletic guys every night with potentially worse results.

He should get his college degree while he still has the momentum. Purdue does well with four year players. They will be better next season if he stays. Early NBA defections disrupt the recruiting process unless a player is so good it is a no-brainer, ie. Romeo. It's those borderline kids thinking they can take a bite out of the big dollar who throw off the recruiting continuity. I could tell my Purdue friend was disappointed when he heard Juwan was coming back. The same goes for Yogi. Likewise, I'll be bummed if Edwards returns.

I think Edwards will make an NBA team, as he does have a lot of skills. Not as an impact player, but as the 3rd PG on the roster, with an ability to score. CE should go pro after this season, because he really has peaked on improving his skills. CE is better off going undrafted, as he can then pick his opportunity. I don't think he is 6 feet tall, either.

and what is this "y'all" stuff? You from South Lafayette?

He'll have couple big games yet in the Big ..Not every coach in the conference is as good as Izzo stressing you have to go under all those screens. ..His shot selection has steadily gotten worse..
He's as good as Fred Van Fleet was.Imo.And look at his minutes in Toronto. Their the same size..
As bad as I don't want to admit it.
It looks increasingly like a split with Purdue. ..

Notes: Measured 6'0 without shoes, 6'1.5 with shoes, 195 lbs, with a 6'5 wingspan and 7'9.75 standing reach at the June 2017 USA U19 tryouts.

Your right, CE had his worst game while at PU vs MSU. Izzo admitted during the telecast that he was guarding with three players at times. Not sure what that says about other on the team, but if you think you have a single guy that will guard him and that will be enough, you're mistaken.
