Biden's gun speech

Now you did it. Prepare for Cosmicbot to post a dozen or more links to how great it was from left wing propagandists. Criticiziing Uncle Joe is like saying Betelgeuse three times for the bot…
👏👏👏👏

Well, you got a huge ovation from Lucy…if that tells you anything.

A bit melodramatic. Nothing really wrong with it, but I don't think it was the kind of transformative performance that can move the needle on a topic like this. Just shouting into the wind.
I agree with repealing immunity, stopping the sale of some semi-auto rifles, and raising the age limit.

I don't think Biden understands how eliminating immunity works. He just read the teleprompter. That needs to be explained in order to get traction. Karl Rove doesn't understand it either, or he was being disingenuous.

Federal red flag law is STUPID. We have two federal court houses in in the whole state of Colorado. How in the hell can we apply the red flag law when the courthouse is several hours away? Biden is just talking out his ass (again) on that one.

Gun legislation is important. Too bad clowns like Biden muck it up.

I would think in a normal world that raising the age limit to 21 would be a common sense policy. But I doubt it'll get off the ground in the dysfunctional Senate

Let's not take this speech or the policies announced within it seriously. Biden et al aren't serious. This is a set of points which he could never again be capable of explaining without a script read from a teleprompter solely to try to slow down the flood he and his are facing in the next 5 months or so. Its as fake as his Presidency is expected to provide.

And a few moments later...

🙄🙄🙄

It's funny, I remember years ago the words 'too soon' was used a bit. Now why wait to make light of these moments?! There will be another coming up like a plane schedule.
Ridiculous.

That one doesn't count. Only three casualties.

As opposed to what, catsup bottles?

CoH, federal laws such a national red flag law can be unworkable. Beyond this, Congress is so divided on the subject of gun laws a federal law on guns just doesn't appear to be possible.

Given this reality, The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) works with Republican majorities in state legislators to draft and share model legislation laws regarding the protections of gun owner rights. Republicans control 30 state legislatures. Thus with the help of ALEC, Republicans can write what is the equivalent of a national law in 30 states.

There are no perfect solutions. Needs to be a mix of mental health, gun control, and security measures. All will cost. We can't get hung up on perfect.

I own guns, but would favor a few changes:

- age 21 to buy any gun.
- age 25 to buy AR-15 style weapons
- maybe require AR style weapons to be stored and shot at licensed facilities. I'm sure this would be least popular.

What if instead of 21 victims we could cut that down to "only" 5-6 victims? Wouldn't that be worth it? Thoughts?

The technical arguments that gun rights advocates use to talk down those less knowledge about guns is a bad take. Sure, assault rifle is a generic term and there are more specifics for types of long guns. However, every time any of us hear about a mass shooting we all know what type of gun was used. Let’s be honest in our discussion here.

The content was fine, but he won't change the minds of Bubba.

Delivery wise it was as good as he can do at this point, he is not the speaker he was 83 years ago.

Narcissism. The majority of Americans think he's doing a crummy job. Only the most partisan want to hear anything come out of his mouth now.

He teamed up with the cool kids last summer but it turns out they can't play worth a shit. Now he's just a worn out old coach no one listens to. You just want him fired.

And to think he was uncle Joe. Likable old guy most of us thought fondly of just a few years ago. He could have stayed retired. Traveled. Enjoyed life. Been greeted warmly anywhere he went. Now he has nothing but aggravation to deal with and people think he sucks and made their lives harder.

He is tailor made for for the VP job. Excellent glad hander, has/ had his worthless platitudes and folksy sayings down pat, decades of relationships on Capitol Hill, and no real managerial skills.

Agree, and I don't see the point of him giving a speech on the topic of gun control. It's in Congress' hands and most people are skeptical anything will change.

Would rather he give a prime-time speech on inflation. He could at least use it to exhibit empathy.

If we raise the age to buy a gun to 21 we need to raise the age to be draft eligible the same.

It's already 21 in Florida. You know, they can write exceptions into laws, like members of armed services, for example. And why should there be one age for everything? You have to be 25 to rent a car.

He might actually agree with you. And I might as well.

The thing is, Joe claims he decided after Charlottesville that Trump had to be defeated, and that's why he decided to get into the race. Surveying the other possible Democratic candidates, I think he was correct in believing he had the best possible chance of knocking Trump off. And the truth of the matter is that that's what the voting public decided as well -- Trump had to go, and Joe would be a safe choice.

Time will tell. Things aren't going well, I'll grant you, but I'm not convinced it's the dumpster fire people are trying to make it out to be, and I'm also not convinced all our difficulties are directly attributable to Biden's policies.

Why do you care?

That's it. If you have to be 25 to rent a car, then no business trips or vacations for those 24 and under. Just trying to keep up with the logic of those above.

Completely off the topic, but would it really matter if the draft age was raised to 21? Or 25? Or 30? It's been nearly 50 years since anyone in the US was drafted into service. And given the nature of the military today and how conflicts are fought, it seems pretty unlikely anyone is going to be drafted.

"Old enough to fight, old enough to vote" led to the 18 voting age and for a period led to lowered drinking ages in some states. Until people changed their minds on the drinking. As you note, with the draft being suspended since the early 70s (thanks, Dick), no one is getting excited about it. But the voting age is etched in stone.

Sh*t, Joe was probably talking about the Battle of Charlottesville from the Civil War.

Just what does it take for you to be convinced of a dumpster fire? When its melting the vinyl siding off your trailer?
