Biden to commute 37 of 40 killers on death row

Not sure I agree. He or his handlers are using his religious beliefs as an excuse to hurt victims families. Fvck him, he enabled it.

So Joe or his handlers just decided they were going to hurt victims' families and this was how they decided to do it?

Your blood lust is palpable. I'm yet to be convinced that executions actually provide any kind of real comfort or "closure" (what nonsense) or sense of justice to families. It might sound good to them, and it obviously does to you, but righteous killing is killing nonetheless.

Some of the families have come out voicing their disgust. Joe and his handlers don’t care about victims. They’re very odd awful people. They’re gross.

Fortunately trump kicked em to the curb and has begun the healing process. I suspect we’ll get a nice heartfelt Xmas post from him tomorrow

I've come a long, torrid path to get here. But I don't personally believe in the death penalty. One of Biden's best decisions.
Here’s the problem. Federal law permits it and the imposition of the death penalty is a very heavy duty process. Biden or any president does not have the authority to overrule law.

A commutation of sentence is supposed to be based on the individual circumstances of a particular offender. To do a categorical commutation as Biden did is nothing more than him personally tossing federal law and the judicial process in the dumpster. And as goat mentioned, the three exceptions pose unique and unprecedented problems in my view.

You are disgusting. Defending child rapists and killers as if you should have any say. Imagine thinking anyone who does what these monsters did is worthy of mercy.

I’ve never disliked a group of politicians more than Biden and his crew. I genuinely cannot stand any of em. That said this is complicated. He campaigned on abolition of it. And for much of the last 50 years it’s been effectively stayed. I’m not a fan of this intervention as it supplants the province of the jury who actually heard the case. A power the presiding judge doesn’t even have if I remember right. But If Biden was going to do it he should have for all. Parsing it looks sus.

incidentally they typically occur in terre haute. Iu has a legal assistance project that works with the prison

The three exceptions show that for Biden, the commutations were political. Not based on a general belief that the DP is wrong.

Clemency is part of the legal process. The Founders even put it in some kind of document.
For individual instances where justice might not have been served. Or where the President believes the person deserves forgiveness because he has expressed remorse, etc. It shouldn't be used as a veto over the legislative and judicial processes because you don't like the law. Talk about authoritarian.

And twenty isn't arguing these guys deserve forgiveness. He doesn't "believe" in capital punishment so has determined that this is one of Biden's "best" decisions. Ends over means. Screw the fact that the legislative process has made capital punishment the law of the land and that these two were found guilty after lengthy legal proceedings.

Legal process? Does not Biden have the legal authority?
He does have the legal authority. Doesn't mean it's good. Difference between can and should.

The legal process I'm talking about is the trial, that included a detailed look at the crime, remorse, etc., the sentencing, etc. by the judge and jury and any appeals thereafter that were reviewed by federal appellate judges. If you think Joe Biden sifted through all that, spent the same amount of time contemplating it, and came up with an independent judgment on the justice of the verdicts in these cases, I've got some DOGE coin to sell you.

ETA: I'll be saying the same thing if Trump pardons all the J6 people, by the way.

And convicted of their crimes and sentenced to death by a jury of common citizens.

Lots of Federalism promotion in here tonight to protect personal beliefs and feelings.

Trump had a bizarre fascination with executions. No Federal executions since 2003 then Trump executed 13 people in his last 6 months in office.

Executions are entirety a judicial function. Entirely!

The only function a president has is to pardon, commute or stay the sentence. No president has authority to order an execution. Trump allowing the judicial process to play out is how government should work.

So there were 0 for 17 years and then there were 13 in 6 months at the very end of his term. And that's just the normal judicial process?

Uncivilized is the shit you fringe freaks do to innocent people, particularly children. You excuse this behavior and make people like me pay for it. Lord knows your poor ass isn’t funding shit.

I wondered why I hadn't gotten a Christmas card from you. Now I know.

Cruel and unusual is forcing the others to live out their natural lives in a box. End it quickly is the only Humane way. 30-40 years of death row is Cruel and inhumane. There should be a right to a speedy death, if we TRUELY believe in our Judicial process not being bias.
But these murderers forfeited any claim to 'rights' Joe.

If the 8th doesn't apply to murderers (or any other criminals), why was it written in the first place? Who would it apply to?
