B1G stats as of 4/25/22...

Here we are on a Monday afternoon and bigten.org still doesn't have the accurate standings for baseball and that is why I always link D1Baseball's standings which are updated quickly as results occur. bigten.org has Illinois in 2nd place with Maryland in 3rd, but Maryland beat Illinois in a DH on Saturday and the last win that day propelled Maryland into 2nd place ahead of Illinois. Now their stats appear current with the number of games played through the weekend being accurate to include the DH that Ill/MD played Saturday (go figure.) Teams have played anywhere from 41 games (Rutgers) to 35 games (Purdue/NW) with IU having played 39 games, so when you look at just totals, there's the consideration of the number of games played. However, I don't think the teams that have played just 35 games could catch us in the negative categories in pitching, if we suspended things until they caught up to the number of games played, we are that bad.

As far as stats go IU is tied with Iowa for 5th in batting with a .276 avg. We are last in pitching with a team ERA of 7.28, and we are deep enough into the season, I don't see that changing between now and the end of the season since we are almost a full earned run behind next to last OSU. We are tied for 2nd with Michigan in fielding with a fielding pct of 0.977.

As far as pitching goes, we lead the B1G in these categories. ERs given up with 272. BBs with 230. WPs with 52 with Hayden leading the conference. Hit batters with 79 with Brehmer, Perkins and Kraft being 1-2-3 in the conference. On the positive side, we are 2nd in strikeouts with 391, with Iowa leadng with 437 and they have played three fewer games than us.

In hitting, Ellis is now tied with two others for the most HRs at 12, and it's been something like 12 or 13 games since he last hit one as teams have changed how they pitch to him. Ellis is also 4th in RBIs. Whalen is 3rd in stolen bases, while Ellis leads the conference in hitting into DPs. Doanes, Ellis, and Mathison are 5th, 6th and 7th in the conference in walks.

In fielding, we lead the B1G in the fewest number of errors committed at 30 on the season which is another positive for us.

Centralized NGOs behind the "end of progressive intellectual life"?

An excerpt:

"n the third decade of the 21st century, intellectual life on the American center left is dead. Debate has been replaced by compulsory assent and ideas have been replaced by slogans that can be recited but not questioned: Black Lives Matter, Green Transition, Trans Women Are Women, 1619, Defund the Police. The space to the left-of-center that was once filled with magazines and organizations devoted to what Diana Trilling called the “life of significant contention” is now filled by the ritualized gobbledygook of foundation-funded, single-issue nonprofits like a pond choked by weeds. Having crowded out dissent and debate, the nonprofit industrial complex—Progressivism Inc.—taints the Democratic Party by association with its bizarre obsessions and contributes to Democratic electoral defeats, like the one that appears to be imminent this fall....

In the 1990s, you could be a progressive in good standing and argue against race-based affirmative action, in favor of race-neutral, universal social programs that would help African Americans disproportionately but not exclusively. Around 2000, however, multiple progressive outlets at the same time announced that “the debate about affirmative action is over.” Today race-neutral economic reform, of the kind championed by the democratic socialist and Black civil rights leader Bayard Rustin and the Marxist Adolph Reed, is stigmatized on the center left as “colorblind racism,” and progressives in the name of “equity” are required to support blatant and arguably illegal racial discrimination against non-Hispanic white Americans and “white-adjacent” Asian-Americans, for fear of being purged as heretics...

Unlike academics who recite the approved current center-left positions on all issues, genuine intellectuals, even if they happen to be employed by universities, are unpredictable. Often they are unpopular, because they criticize their own allies and appreciate what other schools of thought get right. They do not indulge in contrarianism for its own sake but tend to be controversial, because they put loyalty to what they consider to be truth above party or faction. Needless to say, such intellectual mavericks tend to perform quite poorly when it comes to the boot-licking, rote repetition of political slogans, acronym-juggling, groupthink, and “donor servicing” that constitute the forms of intellectual activity favored by big foundations and NGOs, whether of the right or of the left."

The asset management firms that own large shares in companies that sell weapons of war also own large shares in mainstream media organizations that shape the way we think about war.

QUICK FACTS:

  • BlackRock Inc. and The Vanguard Group, Inc. hold large shares in the world’s largest arms-producing company and in mainstream news media organizations.
  • Lockheed Martin Corp.—a worldwide aerospace, arms, defense, information security, and technology company—made over $50 billion in 2019, making it the largest arms-producing company in the world, according to Statistia.
  • BlackRock Inc. and The Vanguard Group—two of the world’s largest asset management firms—combined own over 39 million shares of Lockheed Martin. The two financial management companies together own over 14% of the weapons systems supplier.
  • Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, and General Dynamics are significantly owned by BlackRock and Vanguard.
  • Dr. Joseph Mercola has reported that BlackRock and Vanguard are also “the top two owners of Time Warner, Comcast, Disney, and News Corp,” which are “four of the six media companies that control more than 90% of the U.S. media landscape.”
  • f you have control of this many news outlets, you can control entire nations by way of carefully orchestrated and organized centralized propaganda disguised as journalism,” says Dr. Mercola.
[*]Dr. Ron Paul suggests companies like Lockheed Martin and big media have common motives because they are both owned by the same companies.

B1G standings for 4/24/22...

The dust has settled on the weekend action and here is the link to the conference standings.

IU has two midweek games with a game against Butler on Tues at Victory Field in Indy, and then a road trip to Illinois St on Weds. and both of the schools have losing records. We have a series at Bart Kaufman against the Illini next weekend, and they are currently in third place in the B1G and just dropped two of three to second place Maryland at home this weekend.

Friday Recruiting Notebook - April 22

Indiana received a big commitment this week with five-star forward Malik Reneau.

At 6-foot-9, he adds size and fills an immediate need in the front court, adding depth, skill and versatility. Regardless of the decision Trayce Jackson-Davis makes, it was a needed move to add another front court player.

Some notable quotes Reneau had RE: Indiana and his visit:

On IU's pitch: "The different ways coach Woodson is going to use me to help create for the team (was big). Coach Woodson is going to use me in pick and roll, pick and pop. Isolation from the perimeter, in the low and mid post and even starting fast breaks off a rebound."

On playing with Jalen Hood-Schifino: "Playing with Jalen, you know everybody else on the court is going to bring it because he wants to win and elevate everybody game. He’s just a winner I and love playing with people that do want it takes to win."

Goals at IU: "My individual goals are getting stronger and shoot the three ball better. My team goals is winning the Big Ten and a National Championship."

For more info on Reneau, here is a breakdown of his game from Rivals national writer Rob Cassidy:

"Reneau has long been a high-IQ prospect with incredible physical tools and a knack for passing out of the post. His rise in the rankings this summer was based on his development from a skill perspective, particularly on the offensive end... saw him show an increased ability to create his own shot and display more physicality against elite level competition on both the EYBL circuit and at the NBAPA Top-100 Camp. Reneau impacts games on the glass even when his shot isn’t going. At his best, he’s a well-rounded box score stuffer that is a threat to post a double-double, At his worst, he’s a steadying presence that will help his team win on the glass and by always making the right choices with the ball in his hands. He has the size and the skill set to play major minutes."

Indiana made the signing official yesterday (Thursday).

Indiana now turns its attention to the transfer market and on the wing.

Wichita State transfer Dexter Dennis visited Indiana Monday and Tuesday this week for an official visit and then Clemson midweek. He has no more visits scheduled at the moment.

Dennis brigs an immediate upgrade at the wing position as a slasher and tremendous defensive player. The main knock people have against him is his shooting ability. He shot 40 percent as a freshman from three with 1.5 made 3s per game. He has made 1.6 made 3s per game for his career. He shot 34 percent in both his sophomore and junior seasons and then dipped to 29.7 percent last season.

Indiana wants Dennis and Dennis' interest in Indiana seems to be there as well. His visit went well and I think he ends up making a decision sooner than later -- what that means, who knows because things change in seconds in recruitments.

The second visit this week is currently taking place now with West Virginia guard Sean McNeil. McNeil is the shooter out of the two, shooting 27 percent for his career from three. He makes 1.7 3s per game for his career. McNeil went 33 percent his first year to 38.8 percent in his second year and then 36.8 last season. McNeil is not a defensive stopper like Dennis.

McNeil has a top six of Indiana, Louisville, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Virginia and Texas Tech. Early on the talk was Ohio State, Cincinnati and Louisville as the three teams to watch but after postponing his Cincinnati visit, things look to move more to OSU. Louisville and Indiana. Obviously getting him on campus is a big part and anything can happen after that.

I keep hearing from multiple sources that Louisville may be the team out front and are expected to get the final visit.

Out of the two transfers, Dennis seems to be in more of a 'decision soon' mindset while McNeil is going to take his time most likely, with other visits still to take. Because of that, that may give Dennis the upper hand in terms of finding a spot on IU's roster.

More on McNeil:
