Randy Bennett knows it...

RANDY BENNETT: I just want to add something to that. Like I know Indiana won't use this as an excuse, but the situation they had is tough, like they were just playing Wyoming, they're trying to get that win. They just finished their conference tournament. They really didn't have any chance to prepare for us.

Like those two teams -- we played well, but those two teams are more even than that. They just had no chance. They're flying yesterday. I don't know, maybe be a walk-through at one time with their team.

It's hard to guard us if you can't get a prep on us, and then we were able to get a prep on them. So if you're wondering if rest versus playing however many games they did in a short amount of time and flying across the country, there's no question it's an advantage to be resting.

You've still got to do it. You've still got to play well. There's a lot of pressure here first game of the NCAA Tournament.

So we did all that, but you could see it on their faces. They were gassed, like probably at halftime. They got in too big a hole. Anyhow, let's set the record straight on that. That's how that works. We were in the better spot going into that game as far as the situation to be in.

Is this team really different from last year?

In a lot of ways, this is a redux of last year. Swap Durham for X, Kopp for Armann and Brunk for Durr and you've got a lot of similarities.

I do nevertheless think this team is better. I think not having Rob is killing us and definitely Trey tonight as well. This team hustles better and plays better defense. If we won tonight, I don't think it was because we played particularly well, we had a lot of things fall our way.

We've got three games to rattle off and we need to blow the doors off these teams to get into the tourney before we get blown out in W. Lafayette to end the season.

I'm usually not the optimist on this forum but I think it might happen, we'll see what they're made of.

Just Asking

Is there any reason why the playoff games can't be played in the same geographic area as the next game for the winner? Wyoming would have had the same problems we had with travel and time change. If the NCAA actually cares about a level playing field, rather than maximizing revenue, you would think they would think about how to organize the play-in games. I also agree with those who say, play 64 r 96 so everybody has the same schedule. As for the leadership of the Big10, but that's a different post

Proud of Our Team

Could be worse. Instead of being the second to last team to make the tournament and lose to an excellent 5-seed, 2,300 miles away from home on less than 2 days rest...we could be a 2-seed with a favorable path to the Final Four and lose to a 15-seed within a 3-hour drive to campus.

It's difficult to have perspective when experiencing a lopsided loss, but things could be much, much worse. I'm proud of our guys. They fought hard throughout the entire season. It will be interesting to see what Woody can do with more offensive threats.

The Truest of True Statements

Q. Mike, this is for you. What are the three or four areas that you feel you guys need to be better as far as play on the court? Is it shooting? What three or four things would you pick?

MIKE WOODSON: Well, shooting is a big part of it. I thought our defense carried us guys, and we didn't shoot the ball extremely well this season. You guys know that. You watched us play. And we got to get better in that area. I'd be foolish to say we don't because we do.

We got to be better on the wings from a defensive standpoint. But, again, these are things that I've got to go evaluate once I get back and sit with my coaching staff and just see where we are as a ball club and just start trying to piece it all back together for next season.

-------------------------------------------

I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing what Woody does in the off-season with the roster. It's interesting because I wouldn't be shocked if the whole team (less Trayce) came back and, at the same time, I wouldn't be shocked if the whole team transferred. Maybe every team deals with this in this new era of free agency, but I just get the feeling Woody is going to do some great things to improve our roster. Let's hope so, anyway.

Old Time Basketball

Kudos to St. Mary's. They play the way the Hoosiers used to play. Three or four year players with no transfer portals to poison the pot. Disciplined play. Good shooting. Good teamwork. Great defense and fantastic coaching. Reminds me of the good old days and is proof that maybe you can still win without one and dones and without transfers and with kids that play together. I wish them well.

Sobering

I saw it posted on twittter where we have only been to 4 tournament appearances in the last 14 years. My son just turned 15. He and like all other kids 20 and younger have seen the worst 20 year span in our programs storied history. I am almost in shock / denial that this happens year after year. It truly is amazing that the fans continue to pack it in. I was there for my annual game with my son for the Maryland game and it was noticeably a less raucous atmosphere and a lot of empty seats. Fans appeared to have showed up tonight. It’s tough to see the fans sticking around for many more seasons if we continue to have the kind of success, or lackthereof, like we have had the past several years. It’s not sustainable. Something has to give. It’s difficult to see this turning around anytime soon and what reasons are there to believe we will?
