Juwan Morgan part of Celtics trade, to the Pacers

Pacers send out Malcolm Brogden

Celtics send back a 2023 1st round pick, plus Daniel Theis, Aaron Nesmith, Nik Staukas, Malik Fitts, and Juwan Morgan

Many of those players (I think) have ending or non-guaranteed contracts or buy-out options which will allow the Pacers to save money. So don't count on many of them staying.

salaries from Hoopshype:

Brogden salaries next thee years: 22.6M, 22.5M, 22.5M
Theis: 8.7M, 9.1M. 9.6M team option
Nesmith: 3.8M, 5.6M team option, 7.8M Qualifying offer
Stauskas: only a 2022 1 year team option at 2.2M
Fitts: : only a 2022 1 year team option at 1.8M
Morgan: only a 2022 1 year salary at 1.8M, not sure if guaranteed wholly or just partially

I'd guess Stauskas and Fitts are cut with certainty, Morgan probably, Theis and Nesmith seem worth a flyer.

Indiana Basketball: Non-conference schedule for 2022-23 released

Indiana has released its non-conference schedule for 2022-23 -- highlighted by games against North Carolina, Kansas and Arizona.

"What you are telling recruits is that you can expect to play big time games in front of exceptional atmospheres"

Should Government Strive For The Happiness of Individuals? If So, How?

So at the same time Roe is getting ditched in favor of state political processes, and a local judge is enjoining a new Kentucky statute based on state Constitutional rights, and Thuh Ahia State University is trade-marking thuh word the, CSPAN3 puts up a lecture from an Ahia State history prof about state constitutions at the time of the American Revolution

Interesting early point, thuh great political thinkers of the revolutionary day put most of their efforts at political experimentation into the state constitutions. The federal crap was “slap a framework together - the national government is a sideshow”.

Watch. Ponder. “What do we want a government to be, do, look like?”

Slavery gave the Lincoln generation a partial do-over on these issues.
Looks like abortion is gonna give us a couple.

So what’s harder? Amending a Constitution with or without civil war?

Its interesting no one wants to Spend an hour watching/commenting on a lecture that is so relevant to the Roe debate. Maybe we’re scared our pre-conceived opinions will get challenged.

Back to the future!

B1G Expansion - Association of American Universities (i.e. the “real” AAU)

I have shared this before, but I find it keenly interesting that each of our B1G expansion teams continues to be a member of the AAU. There are 63 schools in the United States as members and 2 in Canada. A school must qualify to join (interesting that ZERO historically identified SEC schools are members) and it is via invitation only. The primary driver of inclusion Is based on research accomplishments and capabilities at the member university. A member can be removed (i.e. Nebraska, which was a member and then moved their medical research off campus and was disqualified … think there is a reason IU transitioned their medical campus to Bloomington?). If you are interested you can read membership qualifications here (AAU Membership Policy) … but the reason I bring this up is it sure seems the B1G is just as much focused on creating a research based membership as they are an athletic based alliance.

Why do they care … well, those budgets DWARF college athletics … take a look at the 2023 proposed budget for AAU member schools.

Now this is a budget

Finally … a quick peruse of who is (and by default who is not) an AAU member may give a good indication of where we may seek to go. Again, not one school has been admitted so far that was not a member (Norte Dame could be the exception) … and only Nebraska has failed to maintain that status (which happened after they joined). May be insightful … may not be … but definitely interesting.

Dusting off Loving vs Virginia

In an effort to circumvent the 1924 Virginia Act To Preserve Racial Integrity, Mildred and Richard Loving traveled from their Virginia home to Washington DC to get married. Five weeks later, upon returning to their home in Virginia the couple were arrested and each sentenced to one year in the penitentiary. The sentence was suspended when they agreed to leave the state of Virginia for a period of not less than 25 years. In 1963 the Lovings, now living in Washington DC, appealed to Bobby Kennedy who referred the couple to the ACLU to take up their case and in 1967 the United States Supreme Court voted 9-0 to overturn their conviction. The losing argument was that interracial marriages should be treated like incest and polygamy.
And now Clarence Thomas is talking about resurrecting his personal view of Catholicism, questioning the moral integrity and constitutionality of same-sex marriages. What an evil son of a bitch.
Another profiles in courage story of the supermajority that the GOP stacked the Supreme Court with in their successful effort to overturn Roe versus Wade.

The NBPA Top 100 Camp has been going on this week and coaches were allowed for Wednesday and Thursday.

Prospects like 2023 commit Gabe Cupps, 2023 target Xavier Booker, 2023 target Arrinten Page, 2023 target Coen Carr, 2024 target John Bol, 2024 target Derik Queen, 2024 target Khani Rooths, 2024 target Aiden Sherrell, 2024 Bryson Ticket, 2025 target Bryson Tiller and 2025 target Darryn Paterson have been in action.

Two newer names to emerge from this week are 2024 forward James Brown and 2023 guard Elmarko Jackson. Both received offers from Indiana.

On James Brown -- he is ranked No. 31 in the class of 2024 and already holds 22 offers. Notable ones from North Carolina, Michigan, Illinois, Notre Dame, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and many more. Has had a standout spring and summer at the Pangos All-American Camp and this week. Through four games at the NBPA Top 100 he was averaging 10.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Shooting 61.2 percent from the floor (16-of-26).

He plays for St. Rita (IL) High school and Meanstreats AAU on the Nike EYBL Circuit. He averaged 13.5 points per game, 10.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game as a sophomore. This summer, he is averaging 10.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

"Before anything basketball, he is a high character young man. Honor roll student from a great family. He has tremendous work ethic," St. Rita head coach Roshawn Russell told TheHoosier.com. "James has elite footwork in the post, great communicator on the floor as well as on the bench. He pushes the break in transition like a guard, makes great decisions in the open floor. Blocks shots consistently. Has good jump shot from 12-15ft and starting to extend out to the 3pt range."

More on Brown:

For 2023 Rivals150 point guard Elmarko Jackson, this is an interesting offer. Obviously Indiana has guard commitments from Gabe Cupps and Jakai Newton.

Jackson is a 6-foot-3 combo guard who is pretty athletic. More of a driver than a shooter so that is a bit of his game that needs to get more consistent at times.

“I feel like my game right now is a Russell Westbrook type of player. I am a really athletic point guard who can distribute for my teammates when I need to. I can hit shots, and when I get hot I make shots from all over,” Jackson previously said to Rivals.

Jackson plays for South Kent (Ct.) High school and WE R 1 Basketball on the Under Armor Circuit.

He has already taken junior year official visits to VCU, Maryland, St. Johns and Miami before his recruitment blew up. He has received offers from Michigan, Texas, Kansas, LSU, Virginia, Tennessee and more in the last month.

As for the other main targets in 2023 -- Indiana is pushing very hard to get Jamie Kaiser, Arrinten Page and TJ Power all on campus in July or this fall.

Jamie Kaiser told TheHoosier.com last week that he is trying to set one up in July but no dates have been confirmed. We will see if that happens or not. He has very much slowed down his recruitment since wanting to announce in June.

Indiana did emerge as a real threat to Maryland and in his recruitment as a whole -- especially if he gets to Bloomington for a visit. Mike Woodson made him a priority for the first live period in June and Kenya Hunter was back to see him during the second live period. UCLA and Virginia remain two other programs in addition to Maryland that matter in this recruitment.

Arrinten Page
and TJ Power told TheHoosier.com a visit in July isn't likely but they are looking to take senior year official visits this fall.

For 2023 No. 2 overall prospect Xavier Booker, news came out this week that he had programs he was looking to visit this fall and named five including Ohio State, Duke, Oregon, Auburn and Gonzaga.

His family told TheHoosier.com that he has no other dates set up outside of Ohio State over Labor Day and those programs are not set in stone at all.

Michigan, Notre Dame, Indiana, Michigan State and more are very much involved. I would be surprised if a visit to Indiana didn't happen.

Indiana is still keeping tabs on 2023 shooters Brady Dunlap and Asa Thomas. At this point no offer has been extended to either but they are continuing to monitor.

Brady Dunlap is very interesting. It seems Indiana is a bit more interested in him at the moment. We will see if an offer comes. Dunlap has expressed interested already in the Indiana program and has said he would like to visit when we spoke to him earlier this summer.

Illinois, Washington and Nevada are the three newest to offer -- all within the last two weeks.

We got the chance to talk with Jordan Hulls for the first time since he joined the Indiana staff.

Obviously the news of UCLA and USC joining the Big Ten in 2024 broke yesterday.

Here is a full breakdown of what it means moving forward:

USC and UCLA to the Big Ten. What does it all mean and what's next?

USC and UCLA are headed to the Big Ten. What does it mean and what's next for the conference on the football field, on the basketball court and the recruiting trail? The good -- and different -- ways the conference will be impacted.

Friday Funnies

An MIT linguistics professor was lecturing his class the other day.

"In English," he said, "a double negative forms a positive. However, in some languages, such as Russian, a double negative remains a negative.

But there isn't a single language, not one, in which a double positive can express a negative."

A voice from the back of the room said, "Yeah, right."
