90 year old IU grad remembers IU -Michigan game October 21, 1967

With my IU wife we were in Ann Arbor that day. Like some of the sports world we woke up to IU having its best season start in many years and we had already seen three games that season, we thought-why not-lets go see the game. Michigan then was kind of like Michigan now-poor season, lost opening games, actually their stadium maybe only two thirds full that day.
But John Ponts team came to play. Thanks to multiple fumbles by Michigan recovered by Indiana quickly led as the first half was coming to an end 20 to 0 WOW
IU should have been able to put the game away, but IU was also fumbled just before the half ended and Michigan recovered and eventually scored as the half ended.

The start of the third quarter began with Michigan intercepting Isenbarger pass to start the third quarter. Going into the fourth quarter was holding on still with a 20-14 lead which played out this way. IU is at its own 13 yard line, 4th and 2. Isenbarger lines up to punt. Instead he runs instead and the play ends with him fumbling and Michigan recovered and to top it off IU has a a personal foul called so Michigan takes over at the IU 2, and immediately scores-so score is now tied-but Michigan misses the extra point-wow!

With the score tied 20-20 Michigan kicks off-IU immediately fumbles, Michigan again recovers-less than 5 minutes left in the game, and goes for a field goal-which they missed!! Isenbarger redeems himself, running a game wining touch down-IU limps out with an amazing best record in 50 years or so.

My wife and I went on to see most of the remaining games-including the beating of 3rd ranked Purdue last game of the season, played at IU. To me by far,the greatest game and crowd I ever saw.

Anthony Leal is great, but if I was in charge of IU athletics

I would tell him if you want to come back next year, instead of giving you 500 k , we are going to invest the money and replace the 2, 13-inch TVs in the concourse at memorial stadium between sections 4 and 7 with several modern big screens. we are also going to quadruple the number of urinals from 7 to 28 , name it leals lane or something like that. spent more time in line to piss or buy a hot beer than I did watching the game yesterday

Piped in music

Whoever was in charge of that needs replaced. They were blaring music every chance they had and even had it playing over the band so the crowd could barely hear the school song after players ran on the field. Crowd is usually riled up and clapping along with the IOI but no one could hear the song.

No point in having a band if we are going to deal with a wannabe dj taking over.

Any thoughts on UM going for FGs instead of TD?

I'm personally grateful. Considering they were getting short yardage, the 2 times they kicked a FG instead of going for it on 4th down seemed like a strange choice, particularly earlier in the game.

That and wasting time at the end of the game instead of calling TO immediately...... very odd.

Maybe it was discussed in the game thread, but I think they had a good chance at a win if they'd have gone for it on 4th down instead of the FGs.

OT: Anyone see the threes raining down in the Pacers game yesterday?

The Pacers have been up and down as well as injury-challenged in 8 games, but they were clicking on the perimeter yesterday.

They shot 46 threes, made 21 (46%), 63 points
They shot 42 twos, made 24 (57%), 48 points
21-25 on FTs

132-121 win over the Knicks

Mathurin 7-9 on 3s, 38 pts
Turner 5-8, 26 pts
Hali 4-10 with 14 assists, 35 pts

Nice to see shooters shoot and the ball not sticking, while realizing that some days they aren't going to fall like that. Plus just 6 turnovers while pushing the tempo.

They were without three rotation players (Nesmith, Nembhard, Toppin) and their two backup centers are out for the year with achilles tears. Some of the youngsters seem to play a better brand of D, though.

Great podcast to watch during the bye week about CCC

Great Podcast takeaways

CCC and family love Bloomington
CCC does not think much about coaches that are screamers
CCC learned a lot about being a head coach while at Alabama with Saban. And he shares those coaching traits.
A takeaway is that CTA was thrust into a job he really was not ready for.
Dolson should be a fly on the wall to learn what makes great coaching.

Only meant to get second link “players perspective” 35 minute interview with CCC (the IU chairs in the background.)

4th Quarter: did Michigan figure out our offense?

One could say the whole second half. But the 4th Q was particularly bad on offense. Weird, because I felt like we could have had 24 in the 1st half if one or two plays go our way.

For those who might know the game better, or who have rewatched (I had to watch on my phone), was Michigan doing anything differently? Pressing our WRs more? Blitzing more often? Or was it just fatigue and talent showing through?

Ladies play Harvard tonight. We played very poorly, Moren was not happy, against a less strong roster in Brown last Monday. We won but it should not have been as close.
I suspect Harvard is also not a strong roster making this a chance to improve.
Lex and Beau sat out injured without a timeline to play. Syd Fenn (Frosh) announced as a red shirt. Gives her a nice year for film study and she comes in next year with Maya (both 6’3”).
Syd Parish tweaked an ankle that seems a non issue. We will see if it becomes a nagging deal or not.
We have length but not great team speed. Shay or Lex maybe, but not a lot. We do not have a player of the year candidate and the big ten is very strong.
I think for us to be successful we will have to shoot the 3 very well, make very few mistakes, and play tenacious team defense.
Good luck ladies.
