Andy Beshear on Vance

"Listen, JD Vance is a phony. He's fake. I mean first he says that Donald Trump is like Hitler and now he's acting like he's Lincoln."

"I mean, the problem with JD Vance is he has no conviction, but I guess his running mate has 34."

Spot on.

Vance was a really bad pick. First, he has said far worse things about Trump (describing Trump as "cultural heroin" is a personal favorite) than most anti-Trumpers. More importantly, he does nothing to expand Trump's base, particularly among women which is where Trump needs all the help he can get.

Dems will be smarter with the VP selection and go with someone who, at a minimum, helps them carry a swing state and appeals to independents.

Harris currently has all the enthusiasm and momentum - - - a record-breaking fundraising haul immediately after Biden dropped out, with much of it coming from grassroots donors, 28,000 new volunteers in the first 36 hours following Sunday's announcement, key endorsements, immediate union support, and a party that quickly united with her. She'll get more buzz with the announcement of the VP pick, and then the convention will follow. The final night in Chicago will almost certainly feature two successful past presidents along with Joe and Jill on the stage with Harris, her husband and the new VP pick and his (yes, it will be a man) wife. I'm going out on a limb here by predicting that scene will be even more memorable and impactful than Kid Rock and Hulk Hogan on stage at the RNC. LOL.

Sonya Massey...

Makes my stomach turn. Glad the other officers were there or this piece of shit may have gotten away with murder. We need higher pay, better training and higher standards to be a police. How this f-cking guy ever got a badge is beyond me. Karma is literally going to get him in the ass every night here soon. Good.

The joy of X

I forget where people were commenting that X (Twitter) was great for breaking news. So why not a thread just for all the wacky crap that people believe on X?

Last night, it was the claim, from a reliable "verified source," that Joe Biden was in hospice care and was unlikely to survive the night. People ate it up, including that scion of decency and wisdom, Laura Loomer.

The account that originally posted the breaking news, even doubling down by saying they would delete their X account if it turned out to not be true.

And you fools use X for news. LOL That explains a lot.

Olympics Thread

The first events kick-off tomorrow (Wed.., July 24) - literally kick-off, as the first events are Argentina v. Morocco and Spain v. Uzbekistan in men's soccer. In fact, there are quite a few events tomorrow (see link below).

And for Olympics junkies, this is the time to finally shell our some $ for Peacock.

Laughable Mike Johnson

I see the dumb a## said he’s encouraging states to stop Harris from being the Dem nominee. Not right that Biden isn’t running anymore. Sounds scared.
Good Christian Mike backs a convicted felon who was also found guilty of sexual assault, stole national defense secrets and shared them. Been trying hard as I can to find where those qualities are found in the Bible. Think I found them when sin is talked about. Mike obviously doesn’t pay attention to those parts. He’s what we call a convenient Christian. Only when it suits his agenda.

Interesting voting dynamic in my house

I'm not sure this required a new post. But it is interesting enough, to me, that I thought I'd get a discussion going on it.

For many years, politics in my household has been very, very much a back burner topic. My wife and I are both independent voters, and we rarely ever talk politics in any sort of depth. Trump has been a little bit of a lightning rod, at times. My wife has a pretty open dislike for him, which dated back well before he ran for President in 16. But even at that, I wouldn't say she has ever been someone that actively thinks about, studies, politics or candidates in general. She'll ask me..."Is there anyone I need to vote for tomorrow"...the day before an election. That sort of thing. Which I think is probably VERY normal.

Biden's Presidency, and his own decline, in our household, and especially with my wife, has acted like a "Political sedative". Basically, we just didn't really care any more. These are our two choices? Really? If that's where we're at...I've got a lot more important things going on to worry about...wake me when its over...that was the mood in our house.

Then Biden dropped out. My wife sent me a text with a link to the news (that's actually how I first heard about it). That's literally the first political related link shes ever sent me. Since then, links and little convos have been happening between dozens of people in our little "village". And I've never seen my wife so excited, and engaged in politics. To the point where she was asking me who I thought would be Harris' best choice to win in the swing midwest states?!?! When I said she needs to get the nomination first...my wife was pretty indignant at the thought of her not being the nominee...and she's now fairly well versed in the process through the convention. I know my wife well enough to know that Harris lure is mainly a couple things 1)she's not Trump 2)how she looks and sounds when she talks. Like Trump for many MAGA voters, the specific words and content can be secondary. Its how she feels when she sees and hears Harris. 3)she's a vibrant, younger woman (relative to Trump/Biden). When I pushed her about some of the things that she has done in her past, some of the policy issues...and reminded her that her favorite POTUS was GWBush...because of "how good a man he is." She gave me "the look", and just said, she's running against Trump. And then went on to say..."I can't imagine all the crap she faced trying to do the things she's done."

So, my wife is currently all in on a Harris campaign. Me? I'm not nearly as sold. Some of her policy history, I don't jive with. I really don't jive with the current far left decisions, rhetoric, direction, etc... And Harris, as much as any other viable option right now for the Dems, seems to be more aligned with further left policies, words, and actions than most others.

But man...Its hard to downplay the impact my wifes energy is having on me. And though I'm not really "on board" with Harris, I am about as engaged or excited to see how the nomination process unfolds as I have for any political process in my lifetime. For me, that's how bad the choice of Trump or Biden was going to be. And I'm wondering if this 24' election might have some similarities to 16', but in reverse. Meaning, I could see polling data showing Trump with a comfortable lead over Harris the next few months. But election night...a tidal wave of women voters, minority voters, etc... in all the key swing areas, and Harris dramatically outperforming polling data.

Harris’s two most replayed speech points: are they inconsistent or a nuanced view of reality?

I’ve seen two clips of hers played a lot. Here’s the one her supporters are rallying around:

I read the nut of her comment as a realistic and essentially conservative one: human beings don’t get to invent themselves out of whole cloth, we are all shaped and exist in context of our world as it is now and as it was before us (that led to where we are now).

Then there is this one:

She can imagine being what can be, unburdened by what has been.

So here, I read her as saying the ideal state of affairs is to throw away the burden of the past and history and strive for the possible.

These two statements aren’t necessarily inconsistent, but I wonder if she links them together at any point ? Is her view that we are born into a circumstances and can change them with imagination (why the first quote then and its emphasis of the inescapability of the past)? How much deference does she want to give the past? How much humility to what has gone before? How much of a burden is tradition?

OK Constitutional scholars

For fun, I don't think what I suggest below will happen, but I believe it shows a problem in how the 22nd Amendment was written.

Here is the 22nd Amendment, at least the important part, and I have highlighted the part of concern:

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.
Next up is the 12th Amendment, which states, "But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States".

So, the VP must be eligible to be president. The 22nd, does NOT say that a person serving two terms cannot be president, just that they cannot be elected.

So, could Harris name Obama to be VP?

@unclemark why was @myteamisonthefloor ‘s

thread locked? Bc of Harris? Joe Brown is an LA guy. UCLA undergrad and ucla law. He was commenting on stuff from the la times and I doubt he’d say what he said without at least some personal knowledge. No big deal but I’m not sure this should be a topic that’s off limits. The board belabors the shit out of trump’s former sex life etc yet Harris is off limits? Is it not character? Like trump?
