New developments in Jan 6 criminal cases...

If this subject doesn't interest you, feel free to skip. Some people on the board don't consider it a major issue, and that's fine. But for the rest of us, interesting plea deals from 3 different Proud Boys this past week.

So the head of the North Carolina chapter Charles Donohoe pled guilty on Fri to reduced charges...

"The two charges Donohoe are facing are conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding; and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers.

Donohoe’s crimes carry a sentencing range of 70 to 87 months as well as a fine of between $25,000 and $250,000, the Charlotte Observer reported. Had he gone to trial, he faced a combined maximum sentence of almost 30 years and a fine of up to $500,000. A sentencing hearing will be held at a later date."

So am I correct in assuming that the 70 months is the minimum recommended for the charges he pled guilty to? Seems strange he would plead guilty to charges which carry a likely 7 yr sentence if he didn't feel there was a real chance he'd be convicted of the more serious charges that could result in 30 yrs and a $500,000 fine. And even stranger they have no proof he entered the building and in fact didn't try to charge him with that. So in order to feel like 7 yrs was a reasonable sentence to agree to, it would seem they really had him and he knew it.

Reading thru the Charlotte Observer story, they point out that the Judge who will ultimately sentence him Timothy Kelly, is a Dukie appointed to his position as a US District Judge by Trump. According to WAPO, Kelly has previously pushed back on the Government's claims of a "Proud Boys Conspiracy". But based on yesterday's proceedings, it's possible Judge Kelly has shifted his views...

Kelly did agree to keep him confined till sentencing, and as he discussed the plea deal he did indicate that the Prosecution might be inclined to push for leniency in light of Donohoe's pledge to provide evidence against other defendants. But he cautioned Donohoe that the Govt would need to feel his aid had been "substantial". So it will be interesting to track how this case progresses...

IU@Purdue, Game 1: PU wins 17-0 as the bullpen has a horrendous 8th in a humiliating loss...

Perkins seems to be regressing as the season progresses, and with our hitters getting handcuffed by the Boilers No, 1 pitcher so far, it's not a pretty sight so far. IU has just one hit so far and that was a single by Glasser. Through 4 IP, Perkins has given up 5 ERs on 5 hits, 4 BBs, 3 WPs, and has hit two batters. We also have two errors on the game so far.

Good Restaurant Service

Granted, I don’t eat in a restaurant much yet, but …

Got GOOD service last night for the first time since Covid started.

Most folks are understaffed
Many use it as a reason to not try

Last night got a guy who visibly HUSTLED, brought drinks without being asked, asked if we needed anything, brought it immediately and was pleasant.

Hope it’s a sign.

The 14 yr old who fell off the Florida ride...

I don't think this is political, although you never know on this board. But for anyone following the recent stories and investigations about the young kid who fell to his death from the free fall ride in Orlando, I saw a video today that opened up a new (for me) possible explanation for what might have happened...

First here is the video of a bystander that captured the tragic accident.

Now this whole incident horrified me (I hate any kind of ride featuring heights, including a ferris wheel or roller coaster), so I'm kind of biased to begin with. The kid was overweight, and 14 seems young. Especially for no accompanying adult, but what do I know? But I'm curious what they are going to determine is the cause for this teenage rider to fall to his death. Maybe someone has a theory...

Now I just saw this video today, and to say the least it is eye opening...It's not the same ride, and these riders are going in the opposite direction- shooting up instead of shooting down...

But I'm pretty shocked at what this video shows, especially the immediate reaction when some of the kids are jostled and startled. I just wonder if it's possible that the young kid in Orlando could have experienced a similar reaction, and was either unconscious or otherwise disoriented when he fell out? Any theories?

Is it just my imagination, or is there a marked difference between the restraining safety apparatus in this video compared to what we see in the accident video?

IU pitching among the worst in the country...

I've all but given up on looking at the stats at bigten.org since they are always a mix of current and non-current stats per team and it's been that way at that site for quite some time. I checked some of the pitching stats out nationally to see where we stood there and it wasn't a pretty picture. One bright spot though is the staff strikeouts which ranks high with 10.7 Ks per 9 IP and ranks 23rd among 293 teams nationwide. Among the major stats elsewhere in pitching, it is brutal and these stats are current:

Team earned run avg: We rank 237th out of 293 teams with a team ERA of 6.82.

Team walks: We rank 275 out of 293 teams with an average of 6.16 walks per 9 IP.

Hit batters and they ranked them in order of worst to best: We rank 5th out of 293 teams in hitting batters with 53.

On the defensive side of the ball we rank among the worst in turning DPs at 253 out of the 293 teams. On the season, we have turned 11 DPs to our opponents 24 up to this point.

In a matter of months, we have gone from the top staff in the B1G in team ERA to the worst, and from one of the top teams in the country in pitching to one of the worst. We knew we had to replace the weekend rotation, but I didn't think that anyone expected a drop-off like this and it's been dramatic. We have a couple of starters that can have good appearances, but it really drops off from there and it seems like everyone in the bullpen is having the same control problems.

Washer & Dryer Set Recommendations

After days of research, I thought I'd ask for your thoughts and experience on a front load washer/dryer set. Unfortunately, the time has come to replace our current GE set that came with our home purchase.

When we bought our previous house about four years ago, I bought a Samsung set that didn't really have any issues but I'm reading they're not the most reliable. At the moment, I'm looking at this LG set - https://www.bestbuy.com/site/combo/washer-dryer-bundles/c9a5fb33-f427-4ab0-bef2-89914585f185.

I wanted to hold out for the Memorial Day sales but our dryer is pretty much out of service. I'm heading to Best Buy today to see if their price match will extend to mid-late May. I'm assuming the price for the set linked will drop $300+ dollars at most places.
