Interview with Dolson -- Football Related Topics

Scott Dolson asked several football related questions. A few highlights off the top of my head:

  • Dedicated weight room and other improved player facilities opening end of summer
  • Fan survey
    • New concessions provider (already reported)
    • Looking at more substantial improvements to the stadium, currently developing what sounds like a master plan to pitch to donors
      • Would need a Simon Skjodt-level donation to start the project
  • Season tickets up 10% vs. this time last year
  • Referenced "staying relevant" in the B1G several times and his goal to get out of the bottom 1/3 of the conference

There is much more in there, FB is the first topic of the interview.

Scott Dolson Interview

We don’t hear from Scott much, so it's notable that he was recently on a podcast. Topics like the "true fans" controversy, on-court results, and outside influences. WBB and FB are discussed too.

Imo he cares and is trying hard to improve all the sports, including MBB. He is still learning the job (it's his first run as an AD), but hopefully he has learned some lessons/gained experience and can execute going forward.

Anyways, it’s insightful and you can draw your own conclusions.

Fetterman's House

i like the background noise of tv at work and usually leave our tv on with sports (champions league today) but if there's no sports architecture/housing shows. used to be cnn. how times have changed. any way not my style but fetterman converted an old car dealership (altho the show said furniture store) into his home in the town where he was mayor in PA. again not my style but very interesting w/ a super cool spiral staircase. he's way too left for me but an interesting unique character. genuine i think.

Competition. Wackiest MAGA group in a single state?

Initially I'd have said Michigan, with their fistfights outside hotel conference rooms and former chairwoman embezzling thousands of dollars and bankrupting the state GOP...

But in light of AZ's recent indictment of a group who tried to implment the fake electors scheme, they now get my vote. Not because they attempted to commit run of the mill election fraud (a Trump staple) but because of the two folks AZ Republicans chose to be their Representatives at the RNC. Each state gets 2 choices and in light of the fact that Lara Trump now co-chairs the RNC it might be difficult to imagine a single state choosing not just 1, but 2 representatives who succeed in making Lara Trump seem normal by comparison. But AZ was certainly up to the challenge...

Leading off is (former) AZ House member Liz Harris a far Right Republican from Chandler. She was initially elected in 2022, and her campaign bragged that she would not vote on any bills until the 2020 election was redone. Eventually she relented and actually voted on a few bills. But she had a pretty remarkably short stint in The AZ House, as detailed by the azcentral.com

"she was expelled from the Republican-controlled House just three months into her term. This, after she staged an all-day, livestreamed legislative hearing at which her witnesses talked about the many ways in which our elections were supposedly stolen.

The highlight was a Scottsdale insurance agent who slimed dozens of public officials and private citizens, making preposterous, evidence-free accusations that they all accepted bribes from the Sinaloa drug cartel."
Now remember the AZ Legislature is GOP-controlled,which means that committees such as the Ethics Committee are under GOP control. Yet that committee unanimously voted to expel her, just 3 months into her term...

"The House Ethics Committee unanimously concluded that Harris not only knew what that insurance agent was likely to say during that February hearing but that she actually took steps to hide the details from House leadership.

Then she lied about it to the ethics panel."

That was Feb, when she was expelled from the AZ Legislature by (presumably) normal GOP Legislators... But just last week she was appointed by members of the MAGA dominated AZ GOP convention to be one of AZ's representatives to the RNC...

Impossible to top Liz as the wackiest Committee appointee? Hold my beer says Charlie Hoffman. Just days after Hoffman was indicted as one of the conspirators in the fake delegate scheme, those same attendees decided to appoint Charlie Hoffman as the other AZ delegate to the RNC. Again Charlie has a checkered past and while a criminal indictment for election fraud is the latest in a string of disturbing events, it's not the one I found most despicable.

Whenever I get depressed at the prospects of continued dominance of Indiana politics by the GOP, I can now think of what it would be like to be a normal Dem or Pub in AZ. As ridiculous as it might sound to hear ads attacking Mike Braun and various GOP Gubernatorial candidates as "RINOs", at least none of the Indiana politicians have as yet sunk to the slime of Charlie Hoffman... From azcentral's account...

"Meet Jake Hoffman, Arizona’s new Republican national committeeman.

This Queen Creek Republican burst into public view in 2020, when he ran an internet troll farm, paying teens to post conservative talking points and baseless conspiracy theories on social media — all aimed at getting then-President Donald Trump reelected.

The Washington Post in September 2020 exposed Hoffman’s Rally Forge, a digital marketing firm working with hard right Turning Point USA." (You just knew Charlie Kirk's group had to be involved)...

"His job was to pay teenagers, some of them minors, to set up fake personas and blanket social media with thousands of nearly identical posts aimed at undermining confidence in the validity of election and downplaying the impact of COVID-19."

Now if Michigan appoints the wacky QAnoner that stole all their party's $$, then they'd be back in the running. And there are 49 states left to choose from. But imho this AZ duet will be hard to top...

Minutes Breakdown

Man...has anyone tried to lay out our lineups yet? Its astonishing how much more solid this roster is than anything Woody has had yet at IU.

Point Guard Spot (40 minutes)... Rice starts, Cupps backs up, Carlyle plays some, Gallo plays some
Two Guard Spot (40 minutes)...Carlyle starts, Gallo plays some, Newton if healthy plays some, Leal/Hemenway if signed play some
Three Spot (40 minutes)...Mgbako starts, but slides over to the 4 often, Tucker plays a lot, Goode needs some minutes here, Gallo could play here some, Newton could play here some
Four Spot (40 minutes)...Reneau starts, slides over to 5 some, Mgbako will get a lot of minutes here, Goode could get some time here alongside Tucker, bench guy we've yet to sign maybe too
Five Spot (40 minutes)...Ballo starts, Reneau plays here some, backup big hopefully here as well, maybe some 5 guard lineup stuff with Mgbako here

Rice...30 minutes (Reigning PAC 12 frosh of the year, helped lead WSU to NCAA tourney...I think he's our most important newcomer)
Mgbako...30 minutes (he'll be played in multiple positions, and should be All B10 level player)
Carlyle...25 minutes (I have a feeling this could push higher by years end, he's really good)
Reneau...25 minutes (This could be more if he improves his defense, and fouls less)
Ballo...23 minutes (he's been a 20 ish mpg game guy, we don't have a lot of depth in the front court though)
Tucker...20 minutes (highly rated freshman, good defender, versatile, should keep him on the court)
Galloway...20 minutes (can play 1-3 positions, he'll fill in enough lineup cracks to be on the court a fair bit)
Goode...17 minutes (Decent size, good shooter, can play 3/4 positions, so he'll get some extended minutes)

If my math is right, that would leave around 10 minutes of PT left. I do think Cupps will be a regular backup to Rice. So he'll play some in every game, I'd predict. Backup big? Hemenway? Newton? Leal?

Think about last years team, even Woody's first two teams. Cupps and Leal both did play a lot last year. Newton would have played a lot. A guy like Hemenway would have played a fair bit. If the backup big is solid, in any way, he would have played a fair bit. Its crazy how much more solid, and deep our roster is.

Highlights of IU targets Braylon Mullins, Trent Sisley, and Malachi Moreno from Indiana Elite this past weekend.

Indiana Elite was in action over the weekend at the Pacers Athletic Center in Westfield. And not that Indiana Elite does not have a roster full of talented players like big man Dezmon Briscoe (Indianapolis Crispus Attucks) and PG Mark Zachery (Indianapolis Ben Davis), a 4-star defensive back who holds 30 offers to play football at places like Florida, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, but it was Braylon Mullins (Greenfield Central), Trent Sisley (Heritage Hills), and Malachi Mareno (Great Crossing High School in Georgetown, Kentucky) who were the center of most people's attention.

Historical TV

I can't think of better historical TV than Band of Brothers, Ken Burns' Civil and War and OJ: Made in America. I've never seen Roots and I've only watched the start of John Adams. Things like The Tudors, Rome, and the Crown might be pretty good, but they're nowhere near the caliber of the former.

Maybe period pieces is another slice of the pie: Mad Men, All Creatures Great and Small, Queen's Gambit, Boardwalk Empire (I've only seen about one season), Deadwood (only seen a little), Downton Abbey, and Sopranos (?) are probably all really good to some relative degree.

Any difference of opinion on those? Any thoughts on other high-quality historical TV?
